Football league confirms Coventry may play outside of City again

Must be fun being a Coventry City fan...

Coventry City could be allowed to play matches outside of its home city again if a long-term stadium solution cannot be found, the Football League has confirmed.

Coventry City chairman Tim Fisher insists they do not want to move out of Coventry again, but the Football League’s stance will do little to reassure fans worried that there could be a repeat of the Sixfields fiasco which saw the Sky Blues play ‘home’ matches 35 miles away in Northampton for more than a season.

Coventry North East MP Colleen Fletcher met with the Football League in a bid to get some clarity over the situation. She demanded the meeting after the organisation had previously ducked questions from the Telegraph over the club’s future.

The club’s Ricoh Arena agreement is due to expire at the end of next season and talks about an extension have been halted.

Stadium landlords Wasps pulled out of talks earlier this year citing the ‘distraction’ of ongoing legal action from CCFC’s owners Sisu in relation to the Ricoh Arena.

However, Mr Fisher recently told fans he believes Wasps would agree to another short-term deal rather than force them to take the club out of the city for a second time.

But the chairman also said plans for a possible ground share with Coventry Rugby Club at Butts Park could not progress at the current time.

He added: “We are not looking to move the club out of the city. When we reviewed Butts Park as a potential solution, we recognised it was in Coventry and every time I talked about opportunities outside of the city people said it should be Coventry City in Coventry.

It's surely only a matter of time until they head further down. I live in Kenilworth and work in Leamington, both less than 10 miles from the Ricoh, and I barely ever encounter Cov fans. You wouldn't even know there was a football team nearby.

It's a shame really, I know they're rivals (as such) but moving from Highfield Road really has killed the club. The only few I have bumped into who have any interest in Cov basically gave up after the stadium move, but vaguely look out for the results on a Saturday evening.

I have a friend who is a Cov fan and he has totally given up of them ever being a championship team again and predicted non league football within 5 years. Think he's being optimistic personally...

I don't like Coventry or it's inbred fans, but its still not nice to see the demise of a club. Must feel absolute shit for the people that support them, to have it ripped away with nothing you can do about it.

Well there is something that they could have done about it... they could have actually supported their team instead of protesting that the ground was too far away

I used to hate them, but they're just irrelevent now.

I do think Coventry fans have to take alot of blame though, yes SISU are twats, treated them like shit, ran the club like shit, but even before all that the fans gave up, didn't turn up to games.

People of Coventry must get rather bored, rather quickly, as i've mention above about the football, but take the Wasps for example, sold out, packed for the first few games, I was trying to find attendance figures to back my point up but I can't find, so I can only say it seems the novelty has worn off and low attendances are creaping in already as when I saw highlights at the weekend and in the past empty seats are all over the shop much like the football.

We've been lucky with our owners even though many of us weren't keen on Mandaric in the end, he wasn't that bad and we can't thank him enough he sold us to who he did (I'm sure he looked after himself first with the sale rather than who he was selling to), but our fans have never gave up, always been there, alot more have popped out the woodwork recently whom are possibly fading away abit now, but even so we've had a pretty good fanbase!

That's an interesting point because back in the 70s and 80s, Tigers v Coventry was one of the big derbies in Rugby Union. Now they have another city's rugby team playing in their city's football ground. Bizarre!

In a way, I'd be a bit sad if the downfall of CCFC continued. After all, they once were a rather big-ish club and can boast some top division pedigree.

The bickering and the humour aimed at the enterprise as well as their supporters is only as funny as long as they're part of the football league.

Imagine them disappearing into non-league oblivion...

Still, what's happened since the move to the Ricoh Arena is nothing short of comical and there needs to be a conscious and collective effort to reunite both the club and the fanbase - if ever there is one. I wish them luck - they'll need as much as they can get.

Well said.

I think anyone still laughing ought to imagine what it might feel like if Mandaric sold us to some dodgy geezers and we further backwards. Could easily have happened to us.

I disagree. I don't think the fans would have given up and turned their back on the club - take administration for an example of seeing how the fans rallied round.

Our average home attendance the year we got relegated to league 1 was 23,509. The year we were in league one was just under 18,000, and that was whilst we set a club record in points in a season. Granted that was still a solid league 1 attendance, but it is still evidence of 5 thousand people effectively turning their backs.

Imagine if that season if we weren't a machine of a team, and instead were average. Do you not think that average attendance would've been even lower? All you have to do is take out the last game where we got the title against Scunthorpe and it drops by a further 500 per game. Imagine if Pearson was shit like everyone else Mandaric appointed, what would've happened then? You don't think another 2, 3 maybe 4 thousand wouldn't have stopped going then?

I'm not suggesting the club would fold and get moved, but you never know what might've happened. That day at Stoke, I wonder what people would've said they thought was more likely to happen in 7 years time. See us in league 2 or winning the premier league.
