Webbo Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 I know there used to be football matches on Christmas Day back in the 50s but then I suppose with TV becoming more common it was moved to Boxing Day. Now we've all seen the big blockbuster films they show on Xmas day , before they show them on terrestrial TV, if there are any good programmes on we can watch them on catch up. So, what do you think? Would you go to a match on Christmas day, would you watch it on TV or should that day be just for family?
purpleronnie Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 I certainly wouldn't go on Christmas day, wouldn't watch TV either. It's about family for me, and not just Christmas day either, got a lot planned as usual.

Voll Blau Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 Absolutely mental how teams used to play on Christmas Day, then have the reverse fixture Boxing Day. Think we used to play Rotherham when that was a regular thing in the 50s? Certainly wouldn't be fair on away fans to ask them to spend their Christmas following their team. Plus I like the fact Boxing Day is almost like Christmas for sports fans. Just a shame the public transport is so shit. Think the NFL have a couple of games on Christmas Day?
ousefox Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 I'd have nothing against going to a game on Xmas day. It will never happen now Boxing Day has become such a tradition.

I'd guess there were a lot fewer away fans in those days, transport wasn't as easy as it is now.
Beliall Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 There's a short film on Christmas day, at around 3pm. Called "the Queens Peach" dunno what its about
Crinklyfox Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 I don't think that playing on Christmas Day would go down well with the players, many of whom will have family lives. Personally I'd like to keep Christmas Day for families to spend time together.
davieG Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 We'll have a winter break to look forward to never mind Christmas or Boxing Day http://www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/ecr/datesleague.htm

Although if we were to do that, I quite like (I think it was) @C-Man's idea of having the break between the 3rd and 4th rounds of the Cup in January, giving those games extra importance. Guess the only issue with that would be clubs kicking off at the idea of having replays during their break.

ScouseFox Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 nah rubbish idea. there's enough good stuff to do on christmas day (aka nothing except eat and drink) without a game of footy, and it'd make boxing day worse too.
Blue ROI Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 Any Leicester City documentaries lined up for Xmas?

(she's a bit posh and calls her bum her anus ffs !).
Fox92 Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 I rarely go on Boxing Day so I'd never have gone on Christmas Day.
Matt Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 Doubt i'd go on Christmas Day, would certainly be an armchair supporter though, saying that it would depend on how things go, why not really?! Christmas Day has certain traditions but it does seem to be getting less and less bothered about nowadays. What I am disappointed with (And it's nothing new this year, it's been like it for many years) is hardly anything on Christmas Eve. No racing (No racing today, only in Ireland), No Darts, No football (Well think there's SPL but I don't consider that football). I understand Jockeys/Trainers work (Hard, very hard) everyday, including non racing days but Christmas Eve being a Saturday this year and no racing, how boring is tomorrow gonna be?!
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 Personally speaking I wouldn't really want football on Christmas Day, as much as I love the game. That day is just for family & friends in my opinion. Boxing Day football, well I suppose we've got used to it now through the years, it's ok.
Guest MattP Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 No, Christmas Day is something to spend with loved ones, not go to a sporting event. I'd probably watch on TV if it was Leicester in a late kick off though, I wouldn't bother with anyone else though.
lildave3 Posted 23 December 2016 Posted 23 December 2016 Christmas Day sports in America is absolutely a thing. Best NBA matches of the season happen, five games back to back on national TV. This year NFL is also happening.
spacemunky Posted 24 December 2016 Posted 24 December 2016 I hate not having matches for the weekend, but I can understand why. It's just weird for me not having morning(here in Canada) football. Looking forward to Monday.
Barky Posted 24 December 2016 Posted 24 December 2016 I don't think it would be right because it's not just the players but also all the ground staff, stewards, ticket office workers, additional police etc who would all have to work on Christmas Day. Maybe if they were paid triple time or something it would be alright but no doubt it would be written into their contracts that they get nothing extra for working bank holidays. I do wish there were games today though. It's Saturday. Could have had games today and then another round on Tuesday which is also a bank holiday instead of the Boxing Day games.
ScouseFox Posted 24 December 2016 Posted 24 December 2016 yeah it does seem weird that the "busy christmas period" involves most teams having one game in two weeks. sure we used to play about 4 times between the weekend before christmas and new years, not once.
GaelicFox Posted 24 December 2016 Posted 24 December 2016 The king George must be watched if you can get wifi at the game !
MC Prussian Posted 24 December 2016 Posted 24 December 2016 Get the newer DVD on last season's success and you're sorted for the evening - if need be, start reading from "Fossils & Foxes" and that'll put the young ones to sleep rather quickly following the Christmas dinner.
Leicesterpool Posted 24 December 2016 Posted 24 December 2016 No way people are entitled at least one day off, playing football on christmas day would mean not just the footballers working but also the staff around the ground. Personally I'm for one backing the idea of a short winter break. Perhaps a short winter break between say 16th December till the 1st January. With the new years day fixture being the first game back. Perhaps keep the boxing day fixtures for non league.
