If the Queens speech doesn't go through Corbyn will be given a chance to see if he can form a govt.

But if it's after the 14 day limit I thought the rules said it has to go back to the polls? Faisel Islam of sky news was tweeting the rules out earlier.

I actually had that conversation with my fiancee last night.

Time to ****ing get out of this backwards little shit-hole.

Full of 'Little Englanders' who think this country is still something special when in reality we're just a shit little island with little relevance to anyone and massive delusions of grandeur of our importance on the world stage.

People duped into thinking that by going it alone we'll somehow be this 'great nation like we once was' when actually we'll just fester in isolation whilst our economy eats shit and we all get a right bumming by our government whilst saying "OH **** YES, HARDER, **** ME HARDER'.

Definitely time to move.

Haha, well yeah sounds like it's time for you to move. Get out before May and DUP ban happiness.

The fixed term parliament act is still in law, rather ironically it now helps May.

Would still need 100 odd Tories to back no confidence.

Should've voted for me. Then we could have a well hung government.

Self recommendation is no recommendation, we have just learned that.

I wasn't expecting to worry about peace in Northern Ireland this Parliament.

And it's all related to a hard border between the UK and Ireland (the EU).

If there's no border for goods or people in NI but there is in the GB for the EU (ie GB is not in the Single Market but NI is) then the DUP will claim NI is no longer British.

But if there is hard border you'll have violence in NI again.

Could the Brexit that promised to take back control of our borders do that without NI violence?

Could one part of the UK remain in the borderless Single Market but the rest remain outside?

If so would those parts really be part of the UK anymore? Wouldn't Gibraltar want the same deal? And Scotland?

Posted

All outside Single Market: violence in NI after hard border reinstated.

Part outside Single Market: Parts of UK separate economically with different trade laws and obligations. DUP unhappy. Further breakup of UK.

All inside the Single Market: No NI violence. Gibraltar and Scotland appeased. Hard Brexiteers foaming at mouth.

Yep. It's a right cock up.

Peston - Senior Tory MP: "We all f***ing hate her. But there is nothing we can do. She has totally f***ed us".

I'm pretty sure that is Ken Clarke.

Edit: I see you need two thirds for a vote of no confidence with the fixed term parliaments act. Or maybe not in minority governments as above...?

May's still in a very weak position though. Especially with the prospect of NI violence and revisiting IRA terrorism over here.

I don't think so. They'd need a two-thirds majority to legislate for an early election, but a vote of confidence would only need to be a simple majority. Corbyn (or an alternative Tory leader?) would then have 14 days to demonstrate that it had the confidence of parliament or there'd be another election.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed-term_Parliaments_Act_2011

"Section 2 of the Act also provides for two ways in which a general election can be held before the end of this five-year period:[4]

  • If the House of Commons, with the support of two-thirds of its total membership (including vacant seats), resolves "That there shall be an early parliamentary general election"

So, any understanding between the DUP and the Tories will only last for as long as the DUP see it as beneficial. If the Tories aren't giving the DUP enough concessions, they'll bring down the Govt. Likewise, if the Govt becomes unpopular in N. Ireland (e.g. due to economic problems, Brexit negotiations), then it will no longer be in DUP interests to prop May up, so they'll bring the Govt down. It's reasonable to assume that the DUP focus will be on party interests, not national interests - massively ironic, given how May has conducted herself in calling an unnecessary election for partisan advantage, causing national chaos at arguably the most critical moment in British politics for 70 years!!

Callaghan + SNP 1978-79 = May + DUP 2017??

1978-79 Winter of Discontent + No-confidence vote -> 1979 Thatcher majority.................2017 Summer/Autumn of Discontent (economy/Brexit) + No-confidence vote -> 2018 Corbyn majority government?! :blink:

Cheers guys I didn't know that.

We could be in for some fun and games then right at the time of the Brexit negotiations.
