Didn't that Al Jazeera thing doing the rounds on Twitter turn out to be fake? I didn't watch the live video so I'm not sure.

It may well have been, I can't confirm, but I've seen similar for various attacks, though as Stripey says, we should be focusing on the decent people rallying around to help.

Yeah, I guess there will be twats thinking it is super "edgy" to do it on a video. Good idea.

You need to get rid of facebook.

It's no comparison of course to dying in a fire! But I'd always wondered just how shite it would be to lose your home, possessions, and everything else in a house fire. Everything you'd saved up for, possibly bought together, all the photos etc... all up in smoke.

Terrible thing.

So long as you all survive, I'd imagine nothing else would matter

agreed. Someone living inside the block said that they could hear a fire alarm but it was very faint.

There's between 120-130 flats in the block so I presume upwards of 400-450. Given there will be families of 3-4+ living in each flat presumably.

Someone at the council/HA who decided to go with the cheapest quote during a tendering process (if followed). Without realising the consequences of it all if the cladding was so susceptible to fire. Given the way the fire spread so quickly outside the building, this had to be one of the causes and catalysts of a fire spreading.

I've been listening to the wireless about this all day and there's been some wonderful stories of people helping those in need. Heart warming tales of strangers making significant donations and offering those who are homeless a place to stay.

It's sad that it takes tragic events like this to bring out the very best in people.

Aint that the truth! What it shows though mate is that such altruism IS in people. As you say, it can often take something to bring it to the fore.

Same, someone I used to work with posted on Facebook that it could be a "right result" if it was full of immigrants.

He deleted it after a few people had a go but I did think it was a bit odd.

disagree.

you can't tarnish all HAs with the same brush because one has a huge failure in its processes while another succeeds in keeping people safe in their own tower blocks.

Maybe but one saying it is someone I know from a few years back. Mice person really just deluded and taken in by that kind of stuff. Always been the same. Now her daughters seem to be the same. The whole family sisters nieces gang up on me. But they are not racist and keep reminding me. They believe that the reason Labour got so many votes was not young people but Muslims after May said she was going to deport terrorists and their families so they all got scared and voted for Corbyn. Nice thought but that equates to around 20mil of the 3.5 Muslim population were Muslims or the UK population is around 10 mil.

More funny than anything

I feel like there needs to be an urgent investigation into this to find out if there are materials being used that don't meet fire safety regulations.

Its worrying how many buildings have this cladding on them, its seemed to burn like petrol utterly horrifying. An urgent review and testing needs to be carried out on this material.

I have to say I am concerned by the increased use of composites in place of more inert materials traditionally used.

Yes I wonder just how much of this material could be out there. It will be interesting to find out if it is just down to non-compliant material entering the market or if there is a specific vulnerability due to the nature of tower buildings. Shame the government is out of action because I'd want people working on this as soon as possible.

It's sad how organisations will pay thousands/millions of pounds to protect merchandise in shops, but skimp on safety measures in people's homes, where family's expect to be safe... this should never of happened. A few fat cats heads should roll for this.. Thinking of all those poor people who's been affected by this tragic event

The Mail is reporting that there are no survivors from the top three floors, and that the fire started as a result of a faulty fridge.

I've not seen this reported elsewhere, but the Mail do tend to get stuff out quicker than other news outlets.

If true and if it was a certain brand of fridge that's already been blamed for loads of other fires (including some in blocks of flats) it's just another layer of awfulness

Cheap plastic cladding fueled the fire and was the main reason it could spread from one level to another that quickly.

Absolutely awful. :( RIP.

Very surprising, due to the damage done from how onlookers etc are seeing it, that it hasn't collapsed after many hours under immense fumes and heat pressure.

From what I've read, the cladding whilst being "retardant" to fire doesn't mean it can't burn. But the cavity in between the cladding and the outer surface of the building has an air "void" which seems to have funnelled the fire. I suppose the cladding, if it gets hot enough, burns.
