He's too good not to be. It has been a privelage watching the guy do his stuff over the last few years, but this is one of those times the club should do the right thing and help him achieve his potential. Of course the club have set a fair asking price, so this needs to be achieved, but once it is everything should be done to make sure it happens if it's what Mahrez wants. Easy to forget that Mahrez has already, and of his own volition, limited himself internationally by opting for Algeria rather than France. It's not just Little Ol Leicester that's holding him back. Also, don't forget that he was happy to sign for us when we were back in the Championship. If he has come so far with us in such a short time, why shouldn't he have faith that the progression, for both, can continue. He knows the ambition of our owners and could opt to stay with the project. Why is it not possible for us to hope for a top 6 place this season? But for an unlikely combination of factors last weekend we would be joint top now (and Arsenal bottom!). Yes it's early days and easy to get carried away, but we are missing 4 potentially key players, all of whom should be back within the next week. As for Murphy's comments, whilst I see where he's coming from, the flaw in his argument is the perpetual undervalueing of the quality of our players (one example is the continual ignoring of the effectiveness of Albrighton when it comes to selection of the England squad).
Sublime_Coatsworth Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 I normally like Murphy but that was a cvnty comment. The arrogance of effectively saying that teams like Leicester should 'know their place'. I expect more from him. His reaction to Lineker's comment about Liverpool and Coutinho really jolted him. I think he'll regret his Mahrez comment.
deep blue Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Oh, and as someone has already alluded to, Murphy may think that Mahrez is too good for Leicester, but none of the 'big' clubs appear to agree (as yet).
Russell sprout Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Mahrez was excellent yesterday, but let's be fair, when he crap it's down to the opposition in people's eyes on here, so to balance it out, against a poor Brighton side he looked brilliant, and was able to showboat, credit where due he was excellent

Because he's not good enough for a side like Barcelona. Mahrez has had one superb season that's all.
Stadt Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Maybe if he was too good for us last season he wouldn't still be here.
Matt Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Right i've put this many different way in the past but this how I see it, rightly or wrong, some of you may agree, some might not. He's can be too good for us, but can he keep that consistency up? Around better players, maybe, it remains to be seen, but it's a risk, a gamble from the big club, £50m in this day and age for a big club is pocket money I guess but it's still a risk and a gamble for someone who might not play week in, week out. Which leads me to my next point, Does Mahrez understand he won't be playing week in, week out? I personally think at a big club he'd be on the bench more than he'd start games. So he wants regular CL or recently he's downgraded that to simply European competitions, would he really get it at a top club? In terms of regular starting spots, I really don't think so, maybe i'm underestimating him, normally we're all bias about our own players and I am. Perhaps subconciously i'm saying this because I really want him to stay and i'm reasoning why he should stay, but i'm trying to take a step back and see the bigger picture for him. He's too good for us, but not good enough for a top, top club, maybe i'll be proved wrong. One thing is for sure, he did himself no favours last season or by making his statements.

He is one of a few players at the club who should be playing regular top 6 football. Wouldnt take it to heart. He should not be playing top six on last seasons showing. One of the reasons the doors are not being kicked down at the KP to get him.
Kitchandro Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 I said this on the other thread - if he's too good for us then how come: A) He was one of our worst performers last season and we were carrying him. B) His goals and assists stats over the past year (especially if you take his penalties away) are pathetic. C) Other players are far more consistent. D) Nobody wants to pay his asking price whilst someone like Sigurdsson has already gone for £45m. E) We've been Champions of England and Champions League quarter finalists over the last 2 years. F) Last week he was dogshit. ?
davieG Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 He may well be too good for us at present and need better players around him but the owner's aim is to make us a better team and to improve the players around him. We'll never achieve that if we can't hang on to those better players. To achieve that we may well have to and some say we're already doing it move away from being seen as a provincial club, This will involve more commercialism, bigger transfer fees, and possible a well known successful manager certainly if we want to do that quickly. Sadly the way the football is set up where the status quo is being protected I can't see it happening so we'll probably have to accept we'll remain a selling club albeit a reluctant one.
Kitchandro Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 The thing people like Danny Murphy don't realise is, although he's our most talented player, he's not our best player.
whoareyaaa Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 If he does get his move to a top 6 club like Matt has said above I doubt he will feature in every game, and lets be honest how far to English teams make it in the European cups these days, we was the only English club in the last 8 last year. bizarre... granted Man U won the Europa but there is nothing special about that competition and he aint going Man Utd... so I don't know what hes expecting really, whos he waiting for. Stay here perform like a genius and go Barca/Real next year.

Third highest scorer, third highest pass completion, 5th in assists, joint 1st key passes, 1st in dribbles, 1st in fouled most often, 1st in shots per game, joint 2nd in crosses per game. He had a disappointing season based on 15/16 but he was certainly not one of the worst. B) They weren't. And why oh why do people insist that penalties don't count!
Kitchandro Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Also why is their so much obsession from people wanting to see what they believe to be top class players playing in the Champions League? I mean, why does Danny Murphy care who he plays for? Why does he want to see him an extra 6/8/10 games a season against clubs like Brugge and Copenhagen? I don't even watch the bloody Champions League. And surely he doesn't think he could play for one of teams capable of winning it.
Samilktray Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Yeah I don't know why anyone would want the best players playing in the biggest and best club competition in the world. Get Michael Kightly and Martyn Waghorn in there instead

A) Certain basic stats can be used to back up any bullshit argument. So he may well have been 1st in dribbles - but how many of them helped the team get the ball into a better position? How many fouls did he draw because he was dribbling instead of passing it to a player in a good position? 1st in shots per game - how many were blazed over the bar or straight at the keeper when teammates were in a better position? To be 5th in assists when he's supposed to be our main creative player is extremely poor. B) The most important stats are 3 goals from open play and 3 assists. That is crap, whatever way you look at it, how can you say that's not pathetic? His all round game was embarrassing for most of the season and he has been a complete hindrance even up to last week at Arsenal. You don't need stats to see that, if we watched our games last season you'd have seen how poor he was. And penalties don't count when you're analysing players because nobody else gets the opportunity to take them. Not to mention he's missed a load! He was certainly the worst regular starter last season. Maybe Drinkwater could rival him after Christmas but at least he was basically carrying the team for the first 3 months.

You would say that he's one of a few that we have who has the ability to play top 6 and Champions League football. As you said though last season has messed that up for him. No matter what your opinion is on Mahrez, I dont get why people get their knickers in a twist over Murphys opinion.

foxinyourbox Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Offer him another £20k a week to stay one more season so he doesn't have to lose face. We get a happy and performing Mahrez, and his agent will hopefully stop putting ideas in his head...for a little while anyway.
Vacamion Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Of course Danny Murphy knows about uneasy relationships where one party should go on to better things. He's playing well out of his league with that Hollyoaks actress.

Scared we are going to win the league again if we keep him or finish above Liverpool, that would be his worst nightmare... like I said in a previous thread the only key player we have lost since our title win is Kante and have added 3 strong players to the team who will be pushing for a place in the first eleven not to mention the rest of the players who are still getting better (bar Morgan, Huth, Fuchs). Scared I tell thee
HankMarvin Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Shame he didn't analyse his performance against Arsenal for motd, complete polar opposite of his thoughts against Brighton, barely looked good enough for Leicester apart from the corner.
