This has moved from an idea to a firm belief for me in recent times: a supranational organisation with enforcing power beyond that of any nation state (basically the U.N. with actual teeth), focusing on issues that affect the entire world (such as environmental ones) is not only desirable but is actually critical for the long term, as the big nation states have proved and are proving, time and again, that they cannot be trusted to act in the best interest of anyone else short term or even themselves long term.

And what has happened with Covid has only solidified this belief.

If we want human civilisation to actually last long term, this is required.

I agree with this. Same goes for people filming at the football. Was watching United on TV recently and Ronaldo walked over to take a corner or free kick or something and all of the people in the front rows are holding up mobiles filming him? FFS - no one gives a shit about your shaky crap footage of Ronaldo taking a free kick which you probably filmed in portrait mode anyway!

Just put your phone away and enjoy the gig/match or whatever

Matches are much better without the Birch and his "rousing" speeches.

I could appreciate Birch's speeches more if I coudl actually understand a word he was saying. Could be the PA system of course, although the stadium announcer comes through loud and clear!

It's just the usual scripted "you're brilliant fans, you make a difference" which is all crap as we know.

There's better food in England than Italy.

Ade Akinbiyi was a good player with a decent goal scoring record.

Those of us who grew up in the 90s, who travelled the world free of fear, and never had the threat of major war hanging over us might just be the luckiest generation in history, and for some time to come I fear.

I like to think that we'll get to some kind of better life again someday. But yeah, I don't think this is an unpopular opinion.

Added to this... a few months ago i watched my shaky footage of Paul Gallagher scoring a penalty for us at a match i had forgotten in from about 2010... FFS surely my little screen isnt blocking your view, just enjoy the game how you want and let me do the same... in 10-20 years... ill still be watching that goal, even though the memory will have long left me

The luckiest and the most complacent.

Apart from those born in the 50s and early 60s, who have spent their entire lives in growth and increasing prosperity and standard of living. Obviously.

Imagine if you’d been there though, actually watching it. Actually existing in the moment.

In a gig, your little screen is bright and distracting or held in someone’s eyeline or your elbows are sticking out. You’re not contributing anything, just a little leech of the vibes of the place.

Football’s a bit different because of tiered seating, so you’re not really impacting anyone else’s view, but you’re still trying to record the atmosphere that you’re not a part of because you’re making a video.

Just my opinion of course.

It does block other people's views though when it's being done en masse. Plus the light from all of the phones being held up is a genuine distraction.

Nah, personal halcyon days and all that. Many generations will have a similar outlook because as individuals we tend to relate fondly to what we know.

I was there, i wasnt watching through my phone... i was holding it whilst being in the moment... now when i watch it back... i have an inkling of what i experienced that night... Ive been to concerts and shows (Pre phones)  that i literally do not remember...other than to say i was there.

Those thousands of, dancing, bouncing, arm waving others didnt spoil it, even though they were often blocking my view etc. the 2 trillion watts of lighting generally overwhelemed my tiny screen light.

Most concerts (in my experience) are now either seated, or half seated and half standing, if you are standing, someone is blocking your view..or you are blocking someones.

I like to get a photo or short video if I’m at something I want to look back on it but no longer than 10-15 secs.

People stand there and film a whole song or penalty at football, it’s mad. Fancy watching the best bits through a screen, when you’re actually there.

This is fair enough. Though the cold War was at its coldest. Was always aware of iron curtain and threat of the Warsaw Pact. Seemed worse than what Putin is upto. Thankfully Harold Wilson kept us out of Vietnam war. If the Soviets had kicked off no way could west have stopped them without nuclear weapons. Scary times although day to day life was good. Always thought lucky to not have lived through ww1 and ww2

Fear has been exploited since 2001 (Sept 11).

Neo capitalism has not just exploded it has stripped society of morals and ethics.

As a world we are probably safer now that at any time in human history.
