Lionheart10 Posted 26 September 2017 Posted 26 September 2017 I can't believe people have actually responded to that load of gobbledegook!!

There is no argument there. If there's one thing our league win should have changed it's this defeatist attitude of 'we can't compete with the big teams'. It's nonsense. If people don't realise now that tactics, tempo and desire are more important than bank notes then they need to get in the real world. All of ours have gone out the window over the last year. We've been sloppy and accepting of slipping down into lower-midtable medicority if not a relegation dogfight. But we need to buy top players and quick, if we don't we'll be in trouble come January.
HighPeakFox Posted 26 September 2017 Posted 26 September 2017 Oh dear - some people (no names) really are so easily hooked....

Carl the Llama Posted 26 September 2017 Posted 26 September 2017 Hmmmm yes. Might I suggest we also try getting some in-house referees like the big teams do? We might even be able to take them to away matches against the smaller teams!

Well, if we treat them to some ice cream from Gellato village at St. Martins, they will surely consider us as their new rag budies
Mr Weller Posted 26 September 2017 Posted 26 September 2017 Great post; bit long but great post. It's quite simple. Most of the time, the teams with the best players win and usually the best players are also the most expensive. Of course, we want to beat the best teams but that's not the same as saying it is most likely. The good news we're really rich, and we are buying better players more than ever before. Over time that counts. History shows we tend to stay in the top flight for around 4-6 seasons and then go down. If we say in it for 10 years and often finish in the top then something really has changed.

The best teams also have better players than Burnley, but they seem to have done pretty well away at Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool so far.
easilee Posted 26 September 2017 Posted 26 September 2017 Ahhh... it's been a while since last I chuckled this much reading an FT topic. Cheers Trav.
Mr Weller Posted 26 September 2017 Posted 26 September 2017 and we did pretty well in 2015-16 but the exception doesn't prove the rule. all we're saying is don't condemn the team and sack the manager for losing by the odd goal to the very wealthiest clubs. We would like to do better and sometimes we will but just because we don't all the time doesn't make us awful.
FLAN Posted 26 September 2017 Posted 26 September 2017 Shakespeare doesn't like playing HIS best team clearly
Lestoh1 Posted 27 September 2017 Posted 27 September 2017 What a load of horse piss. Already THIS SEASON man city have dropped points to everton. Stoke beat Arsenal and stopped Man Utd winning. Burnley beat Chelsea and stopped Liverpool and Spurs. Watford also stopped Liverpool and Swansea stopped Spurs. None of them had the talent of the teams they stopped. They all beat us though. We won the league with less talent than the so called top teams. Other teams have made the most of what theyve got. How about choose some tactics and a style of play and approach to the game that actually enhances your chances of taking points and not play right into the oppositions hands by letting them run through a 2 man centre midfield and giving them 50 loose balls to start attacks from every game. But we dont do we. We persist with the same ineffective trash every game because everyone is too thick to do anything about it. And with threads like this why should they.
Peterorange Posted 27 September 2017 Posted 27 September 2017 Not enough statistical analysis to back up your argument. You didn't even 'draw a line' through anyone, which is basic. I want numbers to prove that Aguero is better than Ulloa. Must try harder.

Yes what we should do is forget years and decades of examples where money trumps attitude and just use the one example of 5000-1, greatest achievement in sporting history as the bench mark. Because it should always be like that, everyone who has played for us since 1884 is a defeatist with the wrong attitude and the same goes for almost every player at every other club.
Babylon Posted 27 September 2017 Posted 27 September 2017 14 hours ago, Charl91 said: Also, by the logic of "We shouldn't expect to gain points against the top teams", we therefore shouldn't expect to drop any points against the lower teams. It's quite bloody simple, you shouldn't expect many points against the biggest teams and you should expect most of them against the worst teams, it's really not bloody rocket science it's a fact of football and almost any season you wish to talk about goes the same way barring a few freaks, but in a two horse race over 90 minutes you can get results that go against expectation. What matters is result over the long term as those exceptions work themselves out.

ozleicester Posted 27 September 2017 Posted 27 September 2017 We need to play in the championship, that way we will be one of the top teams.

nwl fox Posted 27 September 2017 Posted 27 September 2017 I agree, some excellent points raised from the OP with decent analysis to back it up. HOWEVER, I do feel you've failed to address the issue of Bogey teams, that needs addressing as a matter of urgency...
