Leicester stars Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani axed from Algerian World Cup qualifying squad

African nation has already failed to qualify for Russia so will use up-and-coming players against Cameroon

RIYAD MAHREZ and Islam Slimani have been left out of Algeria' squad for the World Cup qualifier with Cameroon.

The two Leicester City stars were expected to feature.

But the Algerian FA have decided to use the fixture to give a chance to some up-and-coming players.

Algeria have already failed to qualify for next summer’s World Cup.

They suffered home and away defeats against Zambia in their last qualifiers, which ended their hopes.

That was a great disappointment having made the second round of the last World Cup in Brazil.

And Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare is far from happy, too.

He hoped some of his fringe players, like Slimani who has started just one league game this season, would get valuable game time on international duty.

He said: “From my point of view some may get some important game time.

Mahrez, incidentally, only appeared as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

Click baity title. We are officially disqualified for the WC, so there is no point bringing in the star players. It's for the youth to shine.

Thought this was going to be about them not pulling their weight for their club, and not in Shakespeare's current plans.

Still, Mahrez, in particular, needs to be talked to in private and tell him to wear his heart on the club's sleeve more often imo.

When did that happen?

Come on. Mahrez did as much as a sub against bournemouth as he did in his two previous starts combined.

I'd have thought that Algeria would put out a strong team as their manhood has been shown to be lacking in this WC campaign. still maybe they think they have more chance of winning with the kids than an out of form Mahrez and out of team Slimani.

They've had a disaster. They were Africa's best team 3 years ago, now they're behind some right minnows.

Isn't the manager 'fighting' to save his job?

Doesn't sound like he's trying too hard dropping his 'star' players.

Maybe this is a middle finger up to Mahrez who couldn't be arsed to turn up/sulking after not getting the Man Utd move he was begging for when his country had an important must win qualifier and well Slimani just being dogshit. :dunno:

The right way to go, fair play, meanwhile England are calling up a player who is suspended :S

I haven't heard that personally. I think it was a mutual decision by the FA and the coach, as the president of the FA came out and justified their reasoning for not calling up the entire squad.

Doesn't matter anyway, we lost the home game with the full squad. Goes to show that the problems lie far deeper than just Mahrez or Slimani.

I'm only going of this that i've read;

Quote

Coach Lucas Alcaraz, who has been given the last two qualifiers against Cameroon on Saturday and Nigeria next month, to save his job, has named four new players, including French-born winger Mohamed Fares from Serie A club Verona.

Not a great source or insight I suppose but i'm just backing up my suggestion/claim.

We're just 2 lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year, running over the same old ground.......The wonderful lyrics of

Gilmore and Waters (Pink Floyd)  from 1975 seem pretty apt

I think he means the score wasn't  2 2 ....

Possibly it's because like several of our new players as well, that if anything are regressing also, they've come under the spell of Shakey whose like King Midas in reverse,  everything he touches turns to shit!

Apparently according to some redditors Algerian FA has gone through major changes last couple of years  and are planning on giving a new breath to the National Team Thus dropping some star players to let everyone know that there are no star players and only the those who prove themselves will be picked

Or, they just aren't picking players who are playing Shlt in Mahrez' case or not enough game time in Slimmy's case.

I rate both players, but they haven't really turned up this season.

I echo Vardy's supposed comments when he said to Slim after his Liverpool goal, why didn't you do that against Huddersfield. (Last minute shot went into row Z)

Dont think either's attitude is right at moment, especially RM, get rid. I am really pleased to have been privileged to see him play for Leicester, but his race is run, he needs to go with all our best wishes.

How about you give them game time by picking and playing them in a team that passes the ball, CS, you numpty.  We've seen if Slim gets service he can bang 'em in.  Riyad on Saturday offered more threat in his cameo than the rest of the team had shown.  Two players that fit into a team that plays football.  Where passing is involved.  Vardy can also pass and link up. I really feel (don't want to make this a CS bashing session) that we are playing square pegs in round holes though.

Slimani said he was approached by Silva at Watford about a summer move and it was unfortunate it didn't materialise as we wouldn't let him go. But apparently he is now focussed on Leicester
