Why did we sack Craig Shakespeare...?

Although I wasnt suprised, and reading months of non-stop critic in this forum, there is still

thoughts that deny, even in modern day football logic and common sense.

I am just putting up topic and throwing out a thought..

# The board took well into late spring after holding onto the descision for weeks, to appoint CS

#IMO that means, he needed time to set up for this season, and have Transfer support, from management.

#Again that transfer-market business was a disaster, more because how it ran and panned out.

# Over-hyped expectations from within, and from forum, just because of an out of character PL title

# a few players who would of been stalwart 1st choice for team, or 1st choice from bench with game time were not fit.

# Only 7 games but in midfield and defence injuries from the beginning.

# Though from those 7 games we only shown 2 good performances, this forum displayed too high a expectations.

# Finances..every PL club have some clout in the last 3-5 seasons, even Burnley, there are no "poverty petes"

#Yes performances were poor, where new boys and other middle table clubs were at least performing.

# We sacked CS in reality, on only 7 games, 3-4 of them away or against real better top clubs than ourselves.

# Lack of patience, based on frustration, is not a good platform to make quick descisions.

# Why sack someone at this stage of the season, without even having a thought on who should then would take over.

# Expecting at this time of season a queue of top candidates ready and willing to jump in.

# Is there in reality anybody out there, who will   >and  think hard about this <  and will do a better job than CS.

#was our win against Swansea achieved, because CS wasnt in charge, or just normal progress and a natural turning point.

#Are fans so desperate, that they just enjoy pretending to suggest Ridiculous names whos sights will always be higher than Lcfc.

# Is this forum a good measure of what the feeling and thoughts are from the terraces....

# Even if you didnt like the CS appointment, did he deserve more time, to have a chance of seeing the players turn it around??

# Are so many on this forum so spitefull, that it was a question of anybody but CS ??

# Are the owners too far away and off pitch, and depending too much on an incompetent boardroom.?

# Is that boardroom responsible for collapse/demise of Backroom staff support.?

#Is there still confidence in any part  of thst Boardroom set up?

#shorld owners be more hands on ?

Maybe there were events behind the scenes that we know nothing about that drove this decision, thing is, we'll never know (based on information we all received after Pearson's sacking)

Neil Ashton's article was revealing. Seems rudkin never wanted shakey to have the job full time and was itching for the first chance to get rid.  Had he waited and our results picked up a bit then he would maybe have struggled to convince the owners. suspect Tuesday was his opportunity after the drabbish performance Monday night.

hopefully the new man will have the confidence of both DOF and owners (or we can look forward to more dramas)

Surely the win yesterday was vindication?

In a week under Appleton’s training we looked much better drilled than most games under Shakey. We were regressing under Shakespeare too.

I understand we weren't playing particularly well although I don't think the results were disasterous. What rankles me is that every time the owners sack a manager they have no clue what they want to do. Sack Sven and get the former manager in, sack Pearson and bring in the first "name" who makes it known he wants the job, sack Ranieri and bring in the caretaker. Every man has had success but it is out of luck and not real planning on the owners part and once again a manager has gone and they are flailing around for someone to come in and sooner or later the luck will run out.

They didn't really want him in the first place.

A "big name" would never have been dismissed so early into his tenure.

I don't think it's as simple as that. From what I saw of the game (lost my stream in the 2nd half) and from most reports Iborra ran the show seemingly now getting fitter and fitting into the team ethos. Had Shakespeare been given another week as in yesterday's match who's to say the Iborra influence wouldn't have been as significant for him as it was for Appleton.

I believe we tried for Rafa at the end of last season but with the promise of funds and commitment to the fans he decided to stay put. I wonder if there is any connection in the timing that the evening before we sack shakey,  Newcastle come out with a public statement that they intend to push a sale through before Xmas. If there is a connection, that statement should have been enough to save CS but perhaps rudders couldn't help himself, knowing that a couple of decent results would mean the owners not allowing him to be sacked.

I’m of the opinion the Arsenal game killed it for him. We’ve not replicated a performance like that since yesterday. He knows he made a bad move with the subs and I think he lost a lot of confidence.

Eitherway he shouldn’t have got the job, it was unfair to expect a man with no real management experience in the past, only the odd caretaker stint to be able to manage in the premier league...

We bash Rudkin, but he favoured Wagner pre season.... maybe it was the owners who decided with the best intentions to give it to Shakey and it all went pear...

All of these stupid articles piss me off... there’s no conspiracy or power problem at the club, we’ve simply made a few errors behind the scenes, let’s not forget the owners aren’t football people per say, so they need advisors and so far you can’t really be angry at anything they have done, Claudio clearly lost it, and they just made a bit of a mess with the replacement... the way people have been talking about us you’d think Moulder and Scully would be sent to investigate...

The results were bad, the performances were poor. Yes injuries didn't help, yes the silva saga was out of his hands and yes he wasn't responsible for recruiting players even though every man and his dog knew that our midfield needed strengthening. Still I for one am glad he's no longer managing the team, all be it I'd still love it if he was a coach here and he'll always be a legend for what he's achieved here, just not as a manager.

Did we really?

We had Shinji over Iheanacho which helped with cohesion but probably isn't the way forward (if only we'd paid £30m for Shinji).

We certainly looked no better than at many times THIS season when Shinji has been playing.

It amazes me how this board sways with the wins and losses.

We only wanted him as an interim untill the guy who we were really after became available. Shakey knew this but only agreed to stay on to pacify the players and to receive a big payoff which he was entitled to due to all his efforts in us winning the title. He’s gone from 100 grand a year to 3 million. Watch him turn up in Belgium in the next 6 months.

Posted

The Club took several weeks after the end of the season before appointing Shakey. This suggested to me that they were looking elsewhere and there were doubts about promoting CS from no.2.

Whilstnot helped with injuries and the loss of Silva CS did not seem to have the tactical awareness and adaptability that the best managers have. The reality is that he should probably not been appointed and the owners should have been patient with the search for a proven no.1 in the summer.

Posted

His sacking was harsh there’s no doubt about it. I don’t think he was sacked for fear of going down but rather the lack of being able to challenge for Europe. It took a long time to sort out his contract in the summer so it’s clear he was never first choice.

A shame for him as he’s clearly a good coach. Maybe he’ll even turn out to be a good manager.

It just shows you the small margins between success and failure. If we held out against Arsenal, Vardy scores his penalty against Liverpool and doesn’t miss versus Huddersfield and Okazaki scores his chance at Bournemouth and he’d still be here.

But I’ll say one thing - whenever you question the owners they always seem to be proved right. Let’s see who they bring in first.

Boo's at the end of the Brom game probably didn't help Shakespeare but it made easier for Rudkin to deflect the blame.

Let's be honest, we don't know the full facts behind the Ranieri, Pearson or Shakespeare sackings

I for one was more upset about Claudio's sacking than Shakespeares or Pearsons

Although I understood that Claudio had to go for the sake of all concerned.

Managers come and go but the Club ( which is the most important ) remains.

I would have preferred Shakespeare to stay on as Coach rather than get the job full time

Ps: Nantes still 3rd........... for one season Claudio and Shakespeare made all my dreams come true and I thank them both for that and wish them luck whatever happens in the future.     :worship:

I was gutted that we did sack him, but there’s no turning back the clock.

He’s gone.

It’s done.

Neither was I surprised but the strange thing was I felt I should have been surprised! Far from judging the less visible members of the 'board' as responsible I suspected that the Sris were being as ruthless as many of their counterparts have become. Every employer who's ever hired a person to do a job and then decides to sack them is guilty of incompetence - because they've failed to thoroughly assess the capabilities of that person. I thought that maybe he (Shakes) was too nice a guy - that thought reflects on maybe how nasty our game has become. I've harped on this more than a little. Let rich men take over our national game and everything that made it the game of the common man and woman will disappear. In a sense it's not too different from allowing rich men to take over our water, transport, fuel, health and welfare. They will use what was our common-wealth to either create profit or inflate their egos (or both). Is City now just a gross advertising hoarding for King Power?

That's shifting away from Shakespeare's dismissal, though, but you raised the point of boardroom machinations so I took that one step further back. Has anyone thought that dismissing him has lost us a valuable resource? The players hold a great liking for him. Maybe he's not manager material but he certainly is an effective coach.

When I think of City winning the title I smile to myself. That's never going to go away. I'd like them to win the Cup as well. I'd like them to sustain season after season the football style that keeps the 'big' clubs on edge when they visit Leicester or host 'us'. Yet I wonder if the football in which our team participate hasn't lost part of its soul in the pursuit of success. Firing guys like Claudio and Craig and holding the Sword of Damocles - success at all costs - over the others who are still in post somehow impoverishes the Corinthian spirit of football competition. Just as players were almost hired serfs before Jimmy Hill and Jean-Marc Bosman changed that, managers are now the fall-guys of modern football. Maybe that's over-egging the situation - after all at the top-levels they get massive remuneration. It's debatable - especially in terms of the lives most of us have.

One thing is sure though - the owners and executives at Leicester aren't the ones at the sharp edge looking anxiously over their shoulders every week, hoping that the players perform well enough to ensure their continued employment. I had the thought this morning that if they fire the incumbent manager after every game 'success' is inevitable. Seems the players only really wake up when something like this disturbs their equilibrium.

I agree with most of what you said Gerbold, however, both the sackings of Ranieri and Shakespear were a result of a team heading for relegation. ~The club simply can't afford to get relegated so it was as you correctly point out a business decision. Expect more of the same if the next incumbent doesn't at least keep us mid-table.

I heard it was because when Top walked past him  he whip-cracked  on the rear with with a towel after the West Brom game. He instantly regretted it but Top was not impressed. Instant dismissal.

I think I saw quite a few talking about "Rudkin out!" Well before, especially when  we did not put in the paperwork for a player we needed in midfield, and sold a midfielder before we had a proper replacement.  Obvious incompetence (from who exactly is still a mystery).
