Foxxed Posted 22 October 2017 Posted 22 October 2017 They took a long time to appoint him. Was it Shakespeare or the board that were reluctant? We played with energy and determination in a few games - the kind a well loved coach could instill. But with just one game with an experienced manager you could see the difference. Perhaps he could have improved tactically over the season. But with the risk of a premier league exit I cannot blame the board for making the decision.
jim5000 Posted 22 October 2017 Posted 22 October 2017 To be fair to Shakespeare, he shouldn't have got the job. We won the Premier league 2 seasons ago and yet started this season with the most inexperienced manager in the division. Even Appleton has more experience managing matches than ol' Craig. Shakespeare will be a good manager, but he needs to cut his teeth at a lower level where the stakes aren't so high and he can learn game and man management without mistakes being so costly.
Bunyip Posted 23 October 2017 Posted 23 October 2017 53 minutes ago, Gerbold said: No disagreement there - certainly as far as Claudio was concerned. I think his forte was charm and, when he needed to exert discipline and focus, he found it very difficult to switch from 'good cop' to 'bad cop'. I think Shakespeare was a punt on a coach who'd apparently turned a disastrous run around. But it seems the old football adage of Ian Greaves - that you could put Mickey Mouse in charge of a team and you'd get a (small) run of good results is true. They got rid of Claudio and somehow the whole atmosphere of confusion and lack of focus disappeared, so that it wasn't as much about Shakespeare's leadership but the players confidence reasserted itself. I think what the critics of the 'board' have opined, is that the team were doing ok but just not 'clicking'. The scouting system has been blamed for bringing ineffective players to the Club but, in my view, there's no such thing as a bad player at these levels. It's often a player who, for whatever reason, fails to settle in some way. Man management is paramount in helping those new recruits make the transition and also in keeping egos in check in order to ensure all squad players are willing to play for each other. What's needed is someone who has the personality to release pressure on the players - to instill enough confidence in them to support this 'misfiring' until they begin to play like we know they can. Managing, unlike genius, is less about perspiration than inspiration. I think they need to find someone who is confident enough to say to the owners/board that he (or she) doesn't give a toss about what they're thinking - that he'll get on with the job without paying any attention to any praise or criticism. In short we need a strong character - Dyche is the guy I'd like to see in charge. Good post. We won the league with simple tactics that suited each and every player, it followed that each player knew what they were required to and the confidence went from there. Ranieri mounted a horse that was already a winner and rode it past the winner post. He then made the mistake ( as did Shakespear ) of trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Unnecessary tinkering with tactics and styles of play which were alien to the majority of the players. All Appleton did on Saturday was let the players go and do what THEY know they are capable and best at doing. None of this slow build up, side to side back passing nonsense that became embarrassing to watch against West Brom. As you said Gerbold out of all the names being banded about Dyche is the one who stands out as being able to get the best out of the present set of players we have.

CosbehFox Posted 23 October 2017 Posted 23 October 2017 If Rudkin had severe reservations about Shakey, then how come he had no plan B for the failure he thought would occur? The guy is a charlatan. If you had a belief that he wasn't up to the job, you'd be considering what other managers could be employed. Instead he's got rid to ensure he is not the scapegoat (see Terry Robinson first PL season) and now started a managerial search. A competent DoF should be well aware of whose available and who he'd like at the club.

Bobby Hundreds Posted 23 October 2017 Posted 23 October 2017 I would sack Appleton now to combat Everton's new manager bounce.
Monsell1976 Posted 23 October 2017 Posted 23 October 2017 Sacking Shakespeare is a great distraction from the silva debacle, as everyone including the press seem to have forgot about it, and the possible arbitration just a conspiracy theory

Shakey knew this but only agreed to stay on to pacify the players and to receive a big payoff which he was entitled to due to all his efforts in us winning the title. He’s gone from 100 grand a year to 3 million. Watch him turn up in Belgium in the next 6 months. Who were we really after? Are we still looking to recruit them atm?
BrokenRecord Posted 29 October 2017 Posted 29 October 2017 Sorry to come late to this topic. I'm thankful to Craig for his contributions over the years and I was happy for him to get the job. However, I really can't see why he was so cautious. It reminded me of our first season in the premier league, where at least it was understandable with what players we had back then. But now we have some fantastic players, and he just made them boring. Also, how is a man who's been in the game as long as he has so tactically naive? I firmly believe had he not brought nacho on against Arsenal, we'd have won that game, and we'd probably have picked up a few more points too. I think even he knew he was in over his head, and he's probably glad now that the pressure is off.
foxinsocks Posted 29 October 2017 Posted 29 October 2017 Nice guy wrong guy....nice guy wrong guy....like a broken record

Tactically useless, incorporating being far too cautious this season. 1 win in 11 league games. Shocking style of football. Albeit Swansea the difference with him gone was ‘chalk and ?’, with at one and two touch quick passing and midfielders breaking forward. None of the above was seen with Shakey for the last 15 of the 20 he was in charge of.
Outfox the Fox Posted 30 October 2017 Posted 30 October 2017 Just been speaking to a Journo at the Liverpool Echo and he has heard from a source at Everton, that the Club are in discussions with Sam Allardyce over the vacant Managers job. Big Sam has said that if appointed, he would want to bring in his own Coaching team, of Sammy Lee and CRAIG SHAKESPEARE. A reunion with Steve Walsh on the cards?

winteriscoming Posted 30 October 2017 Posted 30 October 2017 Shakespeare would never have played that system yesterday. He was tactically clueless and thought king was the answer to the problems. He was far to concerned about not losing rather than being postitive and going for a win. As shown at Huddersfield and bournemouth. It was too predictable every week 442 and didn't have confidence in himself which showed in his interviews after matches. He said after the arsenal game he made wrong subs - good managers don't admit that, they learn from it and develop from it. He did neither and it was the right thing to sack him.

Makes a lot of sense i would say that as I understand it, allardyce to Everton was initiated by allardyce rather than Everton so if they do go for him they are showing a bit of desperation. However, he would get that set of players safe by spring, especially as they will sign a proper CF in January if shakey did go there then expect the ‘LCFC player to Everton‘ rumours to go into overdrive !!
