A good example of this is where the Demontfort Business School is (ugly green premises, that looks odd against an old 100's year old building that is close by in the middle of a busy road). Yes, it can (student premises) generate income for the area these commercial premises are located - but it takes away the usual tradition of many years, which is quite sad really. A bloke in the pub told me that De Montfort university have a long term plan to take over the country. After buying up vast chunks of west Leicester they will expand into the county & beyond. There is no stopping them. Students getting into severe debt is Britain's growth. As for the Dry Dock, makes me seasick.
lifted*fox Posted 24 October 2017 Posted 24 October 2017 the dry dock is an absolute shit-hole. my wife used to live in the halls of residence near it about 10 years ago and back then we used to pop in on the regs for a bit of food / drink. since then they've never given it a single lick of paint, the interior is disgusting, the exterior is an eyesore. the drink / food selection is absolutely gash. the service is absolutely gash. they never bothered to reinvest / keep it looking fresh / stock it with anything decent so **** it, good riddance.

Students probably brought in 90% of the pub's income anyway! Plenty of other places you can drink a pint of piss in generic surroundings with no atmosphere lads tbf as pubs go a fu cking boat is not actually that generic

I drink at the western in the west end. we fought tooth and nail to stop Jamie Lewis building yet another code building for student accommodation. We lost of course, and this beautiful old English pub is now dwarfed by an ugly caravan shaped block of flats that blocks the sun in the beer garden and has 100's of rooms staring down on it. We'll be lucky if he doesn't get his hands on the pub and knock it down. The student scene is a bit much for me too.

Nobody actually goes in the boat these days though do they? I remember being up there before the Atletico game as a kid back in 97, it seemed amazing to me. Haven't seen anyone up there for years though, everyone is just in the downstairs bar which is about as generic as they come.
RonnieTodger Posted 24 October 2017 Posted 24 October 2017 Agreed that it's lost its character, but I sometimes still go in if I'm going to a gig at the O2 or whatever. Before a game, the bar is a joke and as mentioned they play music over the football.
lcfc278 Posted 24 October 2017 Posted 24 October 2017 Not the dry dock! Wow i just didnt sea this coming. If only they had put it up for sail a few years ago, surely an investor would have been reeled in to do it up. I suppose its gone the way of most pubs though and chances of it being saved now are probably dead in the water.

Perhaps they knew of the Uni's plans plus the Uni own the land it's on so there was always a risk involved in investing in it.

Disagree with this entirely. being a major centre of education is absolutely a good thing for the city’s profile and economy.
FoxinNotts Posted 24 October 2017 Posted 24 October 2017 Was in there for a drink after the Chelsea game. Full of Away fans, and the actual Muzzy Izzet was in there having a bite to eat with his kid. The bar is starting to look abit dated tbf.

A worrying trend for sure - sadly, education generally has had all the joy taken out of it by bean counters and league tables - running education as a business and forcing it to submit to 'market pressures' are never going to put the needs of the mind first.

Yes, but for the university's own needs first of all. Yes, university expansion in a city will create a good number of jobs, but does it actually improve the city (Leicester) by building more student accommodation for example?

What do you suggest other than student accommodation, out of interest? Some of the buildings are an architecturally nightmare but I am struggling to think what else could go there....other than housing?

A new modern pub where people want to go regularly, including on non-matchdays. Some supermarket etc, increases competition with Morrison's that's just down the road. Or a secure car-park could have proved handy there, as there's often been co,plants about parking fines near there. Basically, just something that isn't more student accommodation that doesn't really offer anything to the local public.

I'd struggle to find much argument against increasing the number of students we have here in Leicester. Young, intelligent (for the most part) people with money to spend in local businesses such as shops / restaurants / nightlife venues, etc.
dynamark Posted 24 October 2017 Posted 24 October 2017 If the Uni own the site they will want to do something with it.Student flats pay back well for a number of reasons they are tiny money and occupancy is virtually guaranteed no need to provide parking and planning consent is a piece of cake generally compared to other development. The terraced stuff is now occupied by locals including Europeans and Asians who like the area. the owners of the Donkey and New Road will be happy.

Morrisons and ASDA already in the area and then the hundreds of small Tesco / Sainsbury / Lidl / Aldi all within walking / bus distance. I'd say the last thing that needs to go there is another supermarket dude. A car park that would only be somewhat useful on match days? There is already plenty of parking around that area for the student accommodation, business, etc. that is around there. I don't see how any of those things would offer anything more to the local public than more student accommodation. Maybe AJ's burger van can buy the spot and turn it into a fast food mega-complex.
