The standard of beer has massively improved across the country in the last 5 years. Apart from Greene King and Marstons pubs there's normally something pretty good on tap.

And improved massively compared to 20 years ago when I started drinking.

Occasionally you still find yourself in a non real ale town though. I remember being in Stornoway a few years ago alone in a pub with a knitting barmaid and an old guy watching Coronation Street. Two American tourists walked in, asked if they had any local craft beers, and were recommended Tennents.

It is quite disappointing when you walk in somewhere and the bottles are about the only thing worth drinking. Paying £3 for bottle of Peroni defeats the purpose of a pub.

Pint of Guinness down Coalville town on Tuesday , which was pint of Guinness like.

A bottle of ice cold Super Bock from the fridge which was very nice.

So I've found a few places doing Amundsen Dessert in a Can here in Espana  I thought it's gotta be cheaper here, but no it's still silly money. Anyway worth a treat now and then I suppose ☺️

A pint of piss Heineken in flat iron square at London Bridge (£6.75). Then A Porter from the Southampton arms in Kentish Town (£4.90) which was excellent. The difference between the two pints was astronomical. Not been to this pub for years but I will be trying to go more regularly now I can sell it to my friends more easily. Also the first non Wetherspoons sub £6 pint I’ve had in London since end of lockdown

They are expensive but sensational.

Got an Omnipollo NOA (I think that’s what it’s called) from Morrison’s. Tasty stuff.

My wife's grandparents live in South Devon.  I always make sure I pick up Shingle Bay from Salcombe Brewery whenever we visit.

Going to York in December, anyone got any recommendations besides house of the trembling madness and Brew York as will already be going there?

Was going to say the first one, it’s great in there.

Pivni is a great shout. One of my favourite places when I lived there.

Fossgate social is a small modern place with a good choice of pint bang in the centre. The hop next door is decent, does live music (or used to anyway) and great pizza too. They're on the same road Brew York is on so easy enough to pop in if you're heading to BY anyway.

The Habit and Eagle & Child are both decent, more contemporary and very central.

If you want a couple of "old man pubs" (I use the term fondly) that are quieter and off the beaten track, any of the below are good local pubs. A couple of them are outside the City walls but really they're not very far from anything given how big York is.

The Phoenix by Fishergate Bar

The Wellington Inn (literally a terraced house, does Sam Smith's. Worth it for 1 pint just to see what it's like)

Golden Ball

The Swan

@ousefoxmay have some suggestions.

York Tap? Yeah great shout. Same people who run the one at Sheffield station.
