Didn't we get relegated with one of the best defensive records in the league? that in itself is astonishing

Second best defence (45)

Worst attack (42)

Fewer defeats than we had in 2006/07 (18 losses, 19 in 06/07)

All those 0-1 home defeats are seered in the memory. What a disastrous season. Clive Clark onwards was a horror show.

True.

I was proud of that record.  We were one of a group of 9 teams never to have played outside the top two divisions, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle, West Ham, Spurs, Man Utd and ourselves.

That little group is just 8 teams now.

Strangely the case for me as well. I was a fan before then but not at all to the levels I was from League 1 onwards.

And here to be honest.

I was 45 and can remember crying!

Although I wasn't crying as much as the tears of joy I cried in 2016. Still bringing a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye as I type now.

You couldn't possibly write our incredible journey over the past decade. :scarf:

Our 2nd lowest ever finish followed by our lowest ever finish when we won League 1.

Nothing much to shout about there.

....and how they chose our lowest ever League finish to put on the front cover of the history of Leicester City FC i've no idea.

That's not to say there weren't some great moments down there but I don't get this best thing to happen, we didn't need to get relegated to improve that's just an assumption for people trying to feel good about it.

Yep I agree @davieG

it was a very sad day when we got relegated and lost that tag of never being below top 2 divisions etc

as for Stoke it is kind of ironic that they will be getting relegated this season lol

Unless im very much mistaken, the relegation season began with a very early, very impressive 4-1 win v Watford.

We had all our new and (before we got to know them) exciting signings in place, and I remember Watford had started strongly. We then produced a masterful display and won comfortably. Pretty sure DJ Campbell bagged, one was a deflected free kick, but the quality we had on the day was amazing and I left the ground thinking this could be the start of a very good season.

Then that was followed by the league cup tie at Forest where Clive Clarke collapsed and the game was abandoned, I was there, and it pretty much went completely down hill from there, ending in relegation.

It was that very early win that gave me the belief that with those performances, the summer spending, and mad dog's unique "charisma" we were in for a great season. Yet 6 weeks later we were losing in a half empty stadium v Sheffield United under Megson, and we never recovered.

I was really optimistic that Mad Dog would do great things with us, and we ended up with a managerial conveyor belt and relegation.

I wonder what happened with Allen, it was all covered up.

First game of the season, if I recall correctly, was Grayson's Blackpool first game since their promotion. It summed up the last 4 or 5 years years for us.

Megson had us defensive enough but we never scored enough goals.

The highlight for me that season was winning away 1-4 at WBA. I can remember walking out the Hawthorns and my mates rang me who are Wednesday fans saying "is that a mistake or did you win 1-4?" lol

I remember being really hopeful of signing Izale McLeod that summer from MK Dons. I was gutted when he went and signed for Charlton.

Yeah before that Watford game though we got totally outplayed by newly promoted Blackpool.

If Megson stayed, we'd have probably stayed up by literally boring every team to death. Remember winning at Hillsborough and it was the most oddest victory going.

Interestingly I'd say the evening what united the fans and made us decent for a spell was that evening at Stamford Bridge. What an atmosphere and celebrations as good as any until Vardy at West Brom.

is it wrong to want Stoke to go down and given them one finger salute too when they/if they do?:unsure:

just asking.....

Sounds very right to me.

Stoke could go down tomorrow, just 1 day after the 10th anniversary:

- If they draw at home to Palace (early kick-off) & then either Swansea or Southampton win, at Bournemouth & Everton, respectively)

- If they lose to Palace (Swansea play Southampton on Tues, so Stoke wouldn't be able to escape the bottom 3 regardless of other results)

So, they could be down before we kick off tomorrow...

Tomorrow's football suddenly looks a lot more pleasurable. :D

Sometimes to succeed you need to bottom out first. That season certainly provided that. But League One was fun and good for the club to start winning again.

I remember Steve Howard’s hat trick in a 4-1 win at promotion chasing West Brom made me think we’d stay up as well.

I was in Australia on my gap yah for that Stoke game. I got up at silly o’clock to listen online. Devastating but have been in worse places!

well.......Karma does have a way of coming around and biting on the bum.....

hopefully Palace turn them over then and other results go against them

Might be wrong but seem to remember that season we played bristol City at home (who were in the play offs) and we absolutely battered them - could of been 3 or 4 nil up at half time. Somehow the game ended 0-0. The other games which stand out are scunthorpe and colchester at home which we didn't win either. I remember watching the stoke game on the tv and afterwoods I just had to be on my own and went for a drive (was so pissed off) thinking we'll never get back to the Premiership - how wrong was I.

Going to sound like a football snob but I don't care, we should never have been at that level. The fact we'd been treading water for four years before it made it even worse as we'd had the chance to arrest the decline beforehand.

Getting Nigel Pearson in to sort the mess out makes us look back with a different perspective. Let's not forget that Holloway was well-backed in January to sort the situation out and failed to do it.

Losing that record of never being out of the top two divisions was one worth keeping and to see it lost in the most insipid manner was appalling. Thank fvck it was a temporary blip and within two years we were back in our normal surroundings of either being in the top flight or close to being there.

It happened once- never again please.

Is it just me or did it turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to us?

And people say the current situation couldn't be any worse. (I'm looking at you Gary Silke in the Mockery - Muppet!)

Amidst all the moaning about Puel at present and about things off and on the pitch - and let's face it, it was always going to be every which way downhill after winning the Premier League two years ago! - then cast your minds back to this weekend a decade ago when things were to get a lot, lot worse!!

That fiasco of a season of course ended at Stoke with us going down to League One with a -3 goals difference and fearing the worst - with Stoke going the other way and being promoted to the Prem. no less, all on a day where anything that could've gone wrong for us did basically! All rather ironic that yesterday Stoke were relegated from the Prem.
