He knowingly brushed his trailing leg against a knee after he'd decided to go down?

Nacho put his leg across Ronaldo. It was the most blatant penalty you'll ever see.

Dont understand, the Likes , dislikes or empty comparisons for Messi or Ronaldo.

Both great Players of our time...2 great Teams for different reasons tonight.

spain also have a couple of their own  magicians...

I'll Just sitback and enjoy their continual  excellence at top Club Level, and then occasional  International

Performances..

Both excellent Professionals..

Three against arguably the best goalkeeper in the world right now.

I don't like Ronaldo, but saying he doesn't dribble as well as Messi is clutching at straws.

Does Messi lead the line as well? Is he as good as Ronaldo at jumping and heading?

I agree.

Who cares?

They are both immense.

Has anyone any idea on here just how difficult it is to do what these blokes do?! Ronaldo tonight has just about single-handedly given Portugal a point against a team absolutely full of world class footballers.

Whilst chumps on here sit and write about him having a bad attitude at times!

Words fail me....

There's just something different about how the Spanish stroke the ball around the turf. Only one reason they didn't win the game and that was Ronaldo.

What on earth was de Gea doing for that free-kick though, Kasper v Burnley'esc the space he left

Ronaldo is just amazing. Anyone criticising him or trying to take the piss is a snivelling little turd.

What a fookin hero!

Ronaldo can't be criticised? Really? Interesting perspective.

I think he means that its a strange moment to choose to criticise him

Hattrick in the world cup against Spain

Not sure that's true. His statement seemed pretty straight forward

In football terms definitely not but he's just been done for tax evasion in Spain so he's not a perfect human being.

Footballwise though he's a living Spartan god

Ronaldo. One of the two best footballers in the World. Unbelievable talent and professionalism. I agree. However, saying he is above criticism is just plain wrong. He encapsulates everything that is wrong about the way humans are headed. Self obsessed, narcissistic brat. That's not beyond criticism for me. His football is beyond criticism, not him.

And Liverpool. And West Brom. And every free kick we concede.

Absolutely sensational game. Ronaldo for the golden boot. Love him or loathe him, we’re lucky to have two luxury (and arguably the best two players ever) in Messi and Ronaldo to watch week in, week out. And this could be the last time we see them both at a major international tournament. Loved that.

Arrogant, selfish, self obsessed prima donna but utterly brilliant.

Glad he got the equaliser it evened up the fluctuating BBC love in with Ronaldo and Spain throughout the entire game.

When I eventually stumble across that prize  runt  Glen Hoddle I may actually lose it.

Absolutely. I say you can’t compare the two really as they’re so different in both stature and skill set. Both phenomenal talents, and a step above those around them. As many have mentioned Ronaldo was a boss against a side full of world class players, and he (with help from a out of character dodgy De Gea) pissed it. I love the bloke, he’s has the lot. Sometimes you only need one special player and a bunch of average ones to win something, I’ve got a sneaking feeling that Portugal will win this WC.

Ronaldo is just the best. The way he consistently drags that Portugal team through games and to tournaments is unbelievable. He's unrivalled. Messi is a freak too but Ronaldo is just such a different beast.

I've been on Messi's side on the Messi v Ronaldo debate for years now but after tonight I've been swayed. He can do everything, right foot, left foot, in the air, on the shoulder, free kicks. You could literally put Ronaldo in any side and he would rip it up but with Messi, he needs a certain type of style to perform.

People trying to show they are cooler than other people by preferring Ronaldo or Messi to an extreme measure is so painful to watch.  Having a preference is obviously fine but it's so weird when they actually start going OTT with criticisms of whichever one they don't like.  Fat balding men slagging off either of two of the greatest footballers of all time in a kinda "I'm more hipster than you because I prefer "*"*" whilst "*"*"* is soooooooooooo the uneducated choice" makes me laugh and cry in equal measure.  I personally prefer watching Messi and I have never seen any other player live or in video clips from the ages with better ball control than him but I fully understand people who think ol' Ronny is the best.  If you look at pure facts, pure stats, pure achievements it's hard to really argue on what an absolute beast he is.  Hopefully they both "bring it" and light up this tournament.  I would personally love to see Messi truly grace this tournament with his skill and lead Argentina to the title (assuming the mighty England fail) and truly cement himself as the GOAT but I wont really begrudge the smackable one if he manages something special.  We are lucky to witness both of them.  X

I don't like Ronaldo, I am a Messi kind of man all the way.

But you have to admit, what a guy!

Off the pitch, he genuinely seems like a really nice and generous guy. Other than tax evasion and his ego, you can't fault him really.

The Messi side of the debate has always harped on about Ronaldo just being a "better finisher" which does a huge disservice to him. Ronaldo has had a better career. He's done it in different places. He's won more.

They're both easily the best of their generation but for me, he's better than Messi. He's an absurd athelte.

I mean tbh that game could happen ten times over but it remains the same - Ronaldo is more effective but Messi is a more gifted footballer. That's the bottom line isn't it? That will always be the case.

We're incredibly blessed to have witnessed both of them play out their careers. In terms of the sport of football they're the best two players there has ever been (Pele - played mostly against cloggers plus started counting his goals from U9s, Maradona was a proper cheat) and we just have to wait and hope someone surpasses their level during our lifetimes. Messi is the most gifted player there's ever been in terms of playing the game, but in terms of playing and winning football matches Cristiano Ronaldo is as good as there's ever been.

I prefer Messi, but like I say, we should be thankful that we've enjoyed both of them in their prime, they've lifted football to a higher level.
