this is probably dead right and I was guilty of it myself. Thinking Belgium will just muscle them off the ball and be physically dominant but Japan are technicality better and smarter in possession. Showed me what I know.

If you're giving pundits the benefit of the doubt, they're pretty insular - barely focus on anyone not playing for the big six™ as we've seen from how they talk about Vardy. Japan are ranked below Panama in the world rankings coming into this, no doubt for many looking at the world rankings and just dismissing them as rubbish counts as doing their research

I was literally just writing that... the amount of cry baby whinging they did (on Sunday Supplement, podcasts etc.). I really hope Japan win and they have to eat humble pie!

I don't mind treating them like rank outsiders, they are. 

 

But being surprised that they're tactically sound and technically capable is just ****ing dumb.
