Mate, a last minute winner at your end, standing next to the home fans, is one of the best moments an away fan can experience isn’t it. ?

So certainly celebrated, and with a bit more than normal, which possibly wasn’t wise in the circumstances. But what a buzz.

When something like this happens, without any evidence of who the accused is and how many others have witnessed what you have - any complaint may fall on death ears as he may be perceived as just 'hearsay' etc unfortunately.

Unfortunately it still happens, in my experience during such events the police and stewards are useless and do not want to action anything.  It's so very sad

Last time it happened to me was Manchester United away in 2015. Some dickheads United fans were hurling some shocking verbal at me right after van Persie scored. Luckily it is very rare I am on the receiving end but you are right the police/stewards don't want to know sometimes.

Unless it's recorded nothing happens, I've had people call me Paki right Infront of police and nothing has happened.  Unfortunately my radar for racist abuse is nowhere good enough to have my phone ready

I have complained at the club and the police and I have a default apology letter.

Although I'm more then happy to respond to racists and give them a good slap, which has happened, but I'm a family man and I wouldn't want my kids to see my in that state.

You should have gone to the police while the game was on then pointed out who it was. A lad I know got done for racism at a game incidentally at the city ground and got arrested for it and locked up at half time. Cctv evidence was used in court 3 year banning order watching Leicester and 5 year banning order watching England.

That's a fair comment but it's perfectly reasonable to ring 999 when any crime is in progress. Southampton might also be liable for the failure of their stewards to take action.

The 999 number is to be used only for life-threatening emergencies.

Please don't encourage people to dial it for perceived crimes that do not fall into this category.

Racist incidents such as this are appalling in this day and age but perspective is needed and if the emergency switchboards were clogged up with complaints of this nature, people genuinely requiring URGENT and IMMEDIATE response from the emergency services could die.

By all means Google 'when should I call 999' or visit the NHS website for further advice.

Yeah you are probably right. You know the score though I’m sure. No policeman in sight just stewards, right at the end of a row as we were right next to the home fans and would be pissing everyone off clambering by them and the guy was walking up the steps back to his seat and disappeared into the crowd quickly. I think for a few seconds I was just thinking in disbelief ‘What did he just say?’

And that last minute winner was some payback I tell you. ?

This imo is when a call or e-mails to prominent news/sport stations like 5live could get this vile cretin and inept stewards d/w. Southampton FC would not want the adverse publicity.

respect to you Drew Peacock for trying to action something positive against the racial abuse, took a bit of bottle to do that. I just hope that you find the time to report it to the host club with seat numbers etc. so this armpit can be pulled and prosecuted.

Of course, it's not on. but I remember our own fans at home and away chanting homophobic songs at Brighton fans. Guess what our stewards did ?  yep the same as the Southampton stewards nothing.

Lad I know got banned for a year for this with a letter sent to him after the game informing him, nothing said on the day. Don’t agree with the stewards doing nothing but may be a case of action after the game to avoid a flare up removing people during. Either way a shame this sort of behaviour takes place in 2018

Unfortunately it happens at the King Power as well.  At the Wolves game my son and his (white) wife were in the queue to get a drink.  One guy in front of him turned to my son and said "why are you wearing a Leicester shirt?  You should be wearing a Pakistan shirt"

We try to integrate and you get morons like this.  If the guy reads this or the other two with him read this you know who you are and should be ashamed of yourselves.  People like this should be banned for life but it is extremely difficult to prove.

I love the banter at football. It’s give and take, and adds to the tribal nature and feeling of belonging you get from being a supporter, particularly for me at away games.

There are too many snowflakes getting easily offended, but racist abuse is surely something that isn’t tolerated now. Especially in football grounds. It’s not banter and it isn’t funny.

I was right on the segregation today and during the game witnessed, along with a few others, one of our fans being racially abused by a Saints fan. He was a metre away from me, and inches away from a steward when he said what he said.

Absolutely nothing was done. I’ve never reported anything before at all before, but due to the steward ignoring me asking him about it, I spoke to another steward who wouldn’t deal with it either. Then for speaking out, I got some for the rest of the game from their fans who at the end came over and said they’d be waiting outside for me. My 12 year old son has never been as scared leaving a football match with his dad.

Should I just have kept quiet? I’m no snitch normally, but racism is a big no, no in football and my reaction here was provoked by it being totally ignored.

All the FA campaigns and politically correct words are bullshit if this is the norm.

Thank you for being brave and standing up to bigots

Reading through the thread it is just so depressingly sad that a small moronic minority still tarnish the whole spectrum of footballs genuine supporters with outdated and quite frankly disgusting prejudices.  Respect is due for the strength to stand up and be counted in opposition to such filth.

Every club has a few bell ends stuck in a time warp that ruin  it for everyone. Sure we have some idiotic fans that have said pathetic homophobic racist or flat out stupid comments to opposing fans.

So long as our fans stuck up for the person abuse was directed  at (like yourself) that will make me feel  a little better about humanity. Racism in any form is not acceptable and as a person of colour it can be intimidating especially when  at a footy match. I know its not right but i have no problem slapping the shite out of someone if they said things to me. But like singhy said ive got a family to think about so shouldnt ever have to be put in that situation nor do i really want to do that. There for a game, not a fight.

Disappointing, particularly the fact the stewards did nothing.

Thought the point of stewards is for them to both try to prevent and deal with any abuse from supporters in the area they're responsible for?

Have heard some abuse at games, which had been notified to the nearest steward but the culprits still remained in their seats.

Its always weird and seems so out of place when you hear it these days , always puts me straight on the defensive.

Equally annoying  is when people pull the race card on you ''Nah mate , its not your race , its that your a ****in' idiot''.

Some great responses, but well done to OP for standing up. It can be a very daunting and upsetting being a minority and getting abused. To have a fellow  fan stand up shows courage. Well done. Would have been great if a few more stood up and shut the c@nt up. Me and a mate (Also of brown colour!!!) Were racially abused about 20 years ago at WBA when about 5-6 white city lads stood toe to toe with the wBA inbreds and stood up for us. Restored my faith in mankind!!!! Pity theres still a minority of w@nkers!!!
