I love the banter at football. It’s give and take, and adds to the tribal nature and feeling of belonging you get from being a supporter, particularly for me at away games.

There are too many snowflakes getting easily offended, but racist abuse is surely something that isn’t tolerated now. Especially in football grounds. It’s not banter and it isn’t funny.

I was right on the segregation today and during the game witnessed, along with a few others, one of our fans being racially abused by a Saints fan. He was a metre away from me, and inches away from a steward when he said what he said.

Absolutely nothing was done. I’ve never reported anything before at all before, but due to the steward ignoring me asking him about it, I spoke to another steward who wouldn’t deal with it either. Then for speaking out, I got some for the rest of the game from their fans who at the end came over and said they’d be waiting outside for me. My 12 year old son has never been as scared leaving a football match with his dad.

Should I just have kept quiet? I’m no snitch normally, but racism is a big no, no in football and my reaction here was provoked by it being totally ignored.

All the FA campaigns and politically correct words are bullshit if this is the norm.

Either contact the club directly, or post this on their forum as sure most of their fans on there would be very concerned about the incident in their own stadium.

Is there any point? To me, most football stewards in my experience, are a waste of space wanting to just watch the game or have an easy life and not get involved. If you are someone that speaks out or gets involved then you suffer.

Saying that though, one of our fans got kicked out shortly after for having a few verbals with the home end. Just bizarre.

But all the campaigns won’t have any effect if the people who should deal with it don’t.

You need to report it to Hampshire Police asap that area will be well covered by cctv and follow this up by sending emails to Soton, The Premier League and Kick it Out.

A criminal act was in progress so 999 was also an option.

Fair play to you for saying something. Report it, it’s the only way it’s going to be sorted. Shame you didn’t pick up a steward number or similar.

Just to add I bet you ****ing loved it when the winner went in

Grass away. Their club, our club, cops, whoever. No one should have to put up with that bollocks. Did anyone else give any back to the cvnt? Well done to you for doing so.

A couple of ours did, but it was a quite empty area as we had moved from our seats to an unsold area of seats with a better view.

But it made me realise why people don’t stand up for what’s right. It doesn’t matter what’s right or wrong in a football crowd it seems, you look after your own.

We were fine, no actual issues apart from the normal verbal threats, which are normally just words during the game. But I’m a dad and you can see how getting involved, especially in a high emotion moment, added to by our last minute winner, can get you into trouble.

Of course, it's not on. but I remember our own fans at home and away chanting homophobic songs at Brighton fans. Guess what our stewards did ?  yep the same as the Southampton stewards nothing.

Well done. You felt strongly enough about it to speak up that's the only way it will change.  Banter is banter but just because someone is born with a different pigmentation of skin there's no reason they should get abuse. Good on you.

It's not being a grass to report that by the way.  It's just wrong. If nobody said anything that's a million times worse

Whilst nobody should ever have to face racist abuse I am not sure calling 999 is a sensible option. It's an emergency number and should be treated as such.

It should definitely be reported though.

Lots of great replies above. I didn’t get a photo. Didn’t think quick enough as he was off back up to his seat and into the crowd, but it was just after another fan of ours got involved with him, who himself then got booted out so may well be CCTV.

Absolutely disgraceful if you reported it and the stewards took no action at all. If that was flipped you'd bet our lads would be dragged out of the ground.

There's no place for racism in football or general life, as you said, banter between fans is great but there's always a few tw@ts that take it too far.

As far as reporting goes, i'd contact the club (Jim maybe?) as well as posting in the Saints forum. This kind of thing shouldn't be pushed under the carpet.

Sorry to hear the abuse you got for standing up for a fellow fan and that your lad isn't put off future games.

Discriminations...

Ps, a few years ago my Daughter was in Southampton,She invited a couple of Indian friends,we we went out,

Restaurants..no probs..nite clubs..disgrace..!!

Day after,I met up with 3 West Indian friends 2 Anglo,we went to the Southampton game..the abuse from the terraces and

Unfriendliness from the food and drink counters pathetic....I sent in 2 letters to the club, and to city house...

No reply..no sorries. I love Southampton and it's genuine people, but they tend to have a lot of cretins...sorry

Mate, a last minute winner at your end, standing next to the home fans, is one of the best moments an away fan can experience isn’t it. ?

So certainly celebrated, and with a bit more than normal, which possibly wasn’t wise in the circumstances. But what a buzz.

No of course not. I was trying to point out that a pot is as black as a kettle when it comes to stewards. they are not fit for purpose but if we have no police on show in the grounds how are they supposed to deal with this kind of thing?

That's a fair comment but it's perfectly reasonable to ring 999 when any crime is in progress. Southampton might also be liable for the failure of their stewards to take action.
