England will never win anything untill we have a manager that thinks of the team first rather then keeping individual players happy. We keep having the same thing over and over again, managers that are too scared to take off the captain no matter how poor they play. This is the main reason I though it was a terrible idea making Kane captain, Southgate should have stuck to his original idea of sharing it around rather the giving in to media pressure.

It’s not Henderson or Dier that are the problem. They both did their specific jobs tonight. It’s playing one central midfielder that’s the problem. That’s why Croatia beat us in the World Cup and that’s why we struggled again getting hold of the ball tonight. Was all too easy for Spain and when we pressed them it left them most of the pitch to continue knocking it round us. People are too quick to try and make a scapegoat because of their own agenda.

Whenever Dier or Henderson have played for their clubs against Leicester, I’ve always come away from the game thinking “I wish they were that effective for England”. It’s the different system and style that does the damage for them in an England shirt.

Oh god. Carragher is waxing lyrical, and thinking he is talking sense. What has become of the football world?

I'm biased, but he almost seems to be promoting the Vardy style. England's only hope is counter attack.

For all the  complaints about Henderson or Dier the fact is we're not blessed in that department. I saw Cook play for the U21s this week and he didn't look anything special. We did well in the WC by concentrating on set pieces which is what you have to do when you lack quality.

England are garbage, a few wins against non league equivalent opposition at the WC and the general public think Southgate is the 2nd coming of christ.

You say that, but he's shown far more bottle than other England managers. He got rid of Hart, Wilshere, Rooney etc. pretty much straightaway. Had Hodgson/Allardyce still been in charge you could guarantee those players would still be getting a look in. I simply believe that we don't have good enough players. The performances of the u21s, u18s etc. suggest that we're producing talented players but they're not being nurtured properly. That cycle has to change.

Henderson is nowhere near as bad as people make him out to be. Dier on the other hand I just don't rate at all. I see your point though. There's far too much responsibility placed on Henderson/Dier's shoulders to try and run the game. I think the current set up makes us far more affective against weaker opposition than we were previously, but we seem to come unstuck in that area against the better sides.

Good grief. Harry Kane is England's captain.

Ok I get you might have missed Vardy's England retirement if you've been away, but still poor for a Leicester fan not picking up on it, but Kane has been captain for ages. He was wearing the armband last year, he was officially made full time skipper before the world cup.

Rashford is really frustrating.

Uses his pace well and gets in decent positions.

Yes, he scored, but often his shooting decision-making lets him down both domestically and internationally. Suppose that'll improve with time, but still.

He was officially made skipper full time last week. He was named captain for the World Cup and they were making a full time decision after the World Cup, which they did.

Southgates been quoted saying a few from the u21’s might be called up for Tuesday. Can almost bet my life they’ll be those from the bigger clubs who don’t even get a look in there, such as Solanke.

Ah right I thought the world cup one was the final decision. Either way he's been wearing the armband for a while, it was hardy a secret or a surprise.

Oh yeah it's bound to be someone like Solanke. No chance it'll be someone like Chilwell even thought we've just lost a left back.

Yeah, to be honest I thought it was permanent from the World Cup but read somewhere the other day that it was confirmed he’d continue. No surprise at all.

England's problem is that our creative midfielder is Alli, and he's crap.

Forwards fine, defence fine, goalie fine, midfield nnnnyyyyyeeemmmm...

Rashford is the most overrated England player I can remember and there’s been a fair few to choose from.

I've called it all along with him. He hit a purple patch of form under Van Gaal and has been incredibly overhyped since. A young English striker, playing for Manchester United hitting form just as we go into a tournament = expectation raised of him massively beyond his true level of ability.

It's a complete scandal that he's been above Vardy in the pecking order for England. The single biggest example of big club bias you'll see.

And he isn't even naturally that creative is he really.

But we’ve conceded two soft goals and not taken chances and look like we have no midfield

This isn’t a good Spain side either

Haha Haha whatever mate, continue with your hearsay , Pickford barely did anything de gea made several saves and acted up when a clean goal was scored as you expect with the foreigners..

England were very good...

We played well, Pickford barely made a save while De Gea had to make several... we are a force and getting better.. youth level victories are building a England side that is going to dominate .. Maguire is quality and Maddison will complete us for sure, I’m very happy with what I’m seeing. This is an England side that play together and not as individuals as we have seen in the past

But Southgate has still lost to any half decent side he's played

This is the truth of the matter.

We have a young and developing side and the future looks ok

But you’re right... come up against a good side and we lose. Generally anyway

Seems to me like most people on here and across the nation are broadly in agreement about the England team.

Our midfield is the weak link and until we sort it out and get some creativity in there we'll struggle against the top teams.

Not really rocket science is it...

Aren't the best PL creative midfielders none English?

Academies don't seem to be producing any  the emphasis there seems to be on speed and power.
