Haywood_6 Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 What are people's thoughts on the new "toxic masculinity" Gilette advert?
Benguin Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 Load of horseshit but great marketing for the new nation of wet wipes, will sell well no doubt.
Finnegan Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 Anything that upsets Piers Morgan is a win for me. On a serious note, it's preachy, it's corny and lets not kid ourselves - they're more being deliberately controversial to sell their product than actually influence social change but the message is fine. I think you've got to be a seriously fragile little ego to be in anyway particularly triggered by it.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 If it had been on telly without all this fuss I don't think I'd have even noticed it
Finnegan Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 Seriously though, what sort of weirdo boycotts a company because they say bullying is bad? Captain America says it, half the world pays to go watch the Avengers. A razor blade manufacturer says it, half the world's banter lads have a melt down at once. Christ.
Captain... Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 It reeks of a cynical marketing exercise. Especially after Nike’s Colin Kapernik campaign. The message is good, but the delivery heavy handed. It is ironic that the over the top reaction from “real men” says more about the culture of toxic masculinity than any marketing exercise. If you are really that bothered by someone asking you if you could be a better man then maybe you really need to stop and look at yourself rather than get angry. We can all be better men and we all need reminding of that, by our friends, by our family or by our choice of face scraping tool or carbonated sugary beverage.
LiberalFox Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 If Gillette want to pay for an advert then that's up to them. I dislike the idea of large private businesses wading into social debates though.
Mike Oxlong Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 They’re wasting their time as far as I’m concerned. I can’t be a better man.
StanSP Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 I have got no idea why there's so much uproar about it They're trying to stop things like sexual harrassment and encourage others to prevent it or talk about it - why is that so bad!? Okay, it might not be their place to do it, but why does that fact over-rule that actual message they're trying to put out? If you get triggered or seriously aggravated by a company doing this (admittedly maybe to just promote their own brand and gain a little publicity), then I think you need to re-evaluate on why that is so, considering there are many more injustices in the world that probably need more attention anyway...
Mike Oxlong Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 I wonder what the reaction would be if some tampon company was advertising by telling women not to be so stressy at least once every lunar cycle ?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 As a weirdy beardy, this has no relevance to me. Also, can I point out - the kid at the end.... Ginger.
AKCJ Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 Who the **** has that offended? How can you possibly disagree with the message? I get that it's corny as **** and over the top but ****ing hell.
Fox92 Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 I haven't even seen it yet. Can't believe I just got some news from FT.
Guest the fox Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 I think any sane person can agree that bullying and sexual harassment are bad! That's just common sense. What I don't like is the way they've handled toxic masculinity. IMO, a better message would've been talking about the mental health of men who keep bottling-up their emotions. "You are a man, you can't cry" "all the responsibility is on you". You have men breaking down in their mid 30's because of that and the best they could've come up with is " boys will be boys". Yeah, that's why millions of men are depressed, because they cat-call women and bully each other. (Not saying those thing don't effect males BTW). Not the expectations of the world, not the pressure of proving your worth to everyone starting from your parents to your boss. It's not like all the bottled-up emotions is killing men inside, right? Honesty, I'm neither mad nor triggered, I'm disappointed. Talk about mental health you idiots. What a wasted chance.

I was hoping that they’d be changing their slogan but instead it’s just a weird affirmation that women need protection from men in some ways. Odd.
bovril Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 Well cheers foxestalkers for renewing some of my faith in humanity after reading some of the youtube comments on that video.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 The thing that ****s me off about it, is when did adverts stop being adverts? Why've they become these political messages rather than just selling the product they're peddling, it's daft.

Gives a voice to those that may not have had it before and they may be able to reach more people, hence sending out different kinds of messages. So probably within the last 10-15 years...

To think otherwise is daft.

Suzie the Fox Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 Just another advert i will turn over if/when it appears on Tv.
Izzy Posted 15 January 2019 Posted 15 January 2019 Who the fook are 'Gillette' of all people to tell me how to behave? I find it patronising to say the least. Stick to selling razors you plumbs. "We believe: the best men can be". I don't give a shit what they believe. Why bring your 'beliefs' into it? Worlds gone mad.
