What an amazing game. Absolutely incredible. I didn't think the sheer drama of the World Cup Final could be topped but that last few balls - Lyon dropping the ball, Stokes lbw not given. 2 runs to win, 1 wicket to win. Incredible stuff.

 

Now we just need a win and a draw to see it home. No margin for error, defeat in either of the next two tests and it's all over.

I don’t see either of the remaining games ending in a draw unless the weather plays a massive part , neither  side bat well enough over 5 days.

I know bugger-all about cricket. I’ve only ever watched it once (20/20) and that was in a bar in India a few years ago. 

 

However, I’ve just watched that Ben Stokes thingy on the BBC Sport website and even I found it interesting and enjoyable.

Cricket has been the best thing about this summer by a country mile, even my 9 year old has been hooked!

I just love the fact he knows he's nailed it as soon as he's hit it. He knows the job is done. What a feeling.

ha ha. I know the feeling. I've been fencing questions from my 11 and 8 year old sons about cricket for the last few weeks. I've done my best to answer them but sometimes it's just a case of "cricket has some really obscure rules which no one actually understands"!

 

Driving home last night and explaining to them what "rotating the strike" means, whilst they are asking "why don't they save a good batsman for the end?"

Butler was unfortunately ran out,the rest of the innings Australia made some poor  mistakes  and poor decision making.

I Haven yet Read any of the OZ Media reports....but I supose we could tilt them to show,'if the Boot was in the other foot'

I was in awe watching it. Not only was that last hour mesmirizing, it's even more impressive because Stokes started his innings so slowly.

 

Lot of bitterness here in Aus about the fielding and captaincy but that will be a footnote when we look back at this innings. One for the ages.

 

Now I'm looking forward to another two chancesto retain the Ashes. Cracking series so far.

If Jimmy is fit we have to go Jimmy, Broad, Archer for me. Stokes awesome with the ball in the 2nd innings too and I've been very encouraged by Leach. Sad to drop Woakes as he's a really valuable and reliable player but he's not really turned up with bat or ball this series.

They'd be absolutely brain dead to bring Jimmy back in unless they are 100% sure he can make it through a 5-day test. If he breaks down in the middle of a test again they are screwed.

The bowling isn't the issue for me, we can get 20 wickets comfortably but so can the Aussies (not yesterday though ha). If we bring Jimmy in presumably for Woakes, our tail will start at 8 and we wont get enough runs given that Smith will be back. If it gets to the Oval needing to win then I think Jimmy is a risk worth taking.

Lots of talk that Woakes is carrying a knee injury. It might be the perfect excuse to get Anderson back in without needing to drop Broad or Archer.

It’s been brought into football, regardless of whether or not you agree with It, to cut out errors and mistakes by referees over the entirety of the game. 

 

Yesterday I saw a sport where because Australia had used up their reviews an abysmal LBW call by the on field umpire was allowed to stand. 

 

I know we won and it was the same for both teams but If we are going to use video assistance in sport we have to go all in.

Australia burned their last review on a terrible lbw shout. It was their fault they didn't have the review. I thought it was fantastic, and the rules work just fine. Two wrong reviews is plenty if you aren't a bunch of panicky losers. Cricket authorities don't want the game totally umpired from off field.

The momentum is with us, but we need to keep emotion out of who we go for in Manchester.

That's what I'd go for too, but tbh I would give Roy at least the rest of the series - there's been far too much revolving door when it comes to the openers in the past few years anyway.

You might be onto something there, though I'd still want to stick with six specialist batsmen, an all-rounder and four bowlers if it was at all possible.

DRS is designed to account for a shocking umpiring decision.

 

Like when Root smashed the ball onto his pads and was given out. The review is there to cover up those decisions.

 

Burning a review after that ball was pathetic captaincy from Paine. That ball was pitched in a different postcode to the stumps.

can someone explain or elaborate on this? is stokes wrong on this occasion? looked nailed on and if they hadnt used the review in the over before, he would of been gone.

while i understand the laws, and how the review system works. why do we even have on field umpires? when they can guarantee the correct decision everytime from upstairs, and cut out the need to ever review a decision?

with football, VAR is still a matter of opinion but with cricket it either is or isnt barring exceptional circumstances like the catch given but had appeared to bounce from one angle and not from the other (either in the second test or the first innings of the 3rd, not sure)

decisions given on umpires call can still be given without the need of an onfield umpire

shouldnt change something that works, however, i personally think it can be improved. use the technology, eradicate reviews and on field umpiring and get the decision right. gaffeney had 6!! overturned in one match

Anyone else think the Hawkeye got the LBW wrong anyway? Thought at the time that the ball tracker looked off and the more I see it the more convinced I am. There's no way the ball was coming back that much. Had it hooping back in a mile following the line of the ball AFTER it had flicked the front pad. Bit biased maybe but I think at worst it would've been umpire's call.

Their remaining review was a dreadful call, it was never out and was just desperation because they probably thought they wouldn't get another chance to use it.

 

Human error, how frustrating, is part of the game. We shouldn't take everything away from the officials.

is the job of an official to be a part of the game? or to enforce the rules of the sport? or both?

i guess thats a matter of opinion in itself but to your comment "we shouldnt take everything away from the officials" id ask why? if it meant the correct application of all the laws at all times.
