Burnley pre match

I think we're at the point where "Do we start Praet?" shouldn't even be part of the conversation.  The question should be how we best construct a formation with Praet as part of it.

For me, right now that's a 4-1-2-1-2 with Perez alongside Vardy up top.  Against a club like Burnley the fullbacks should be playing high enough up the pitch to provide width.  The only real alternative is to use either Praet or Tielemans as a winger.  I'm not against the idea on principle, but I think that's a better option against a more positive-possession side than Burnley.

Was incredibly poignant seeing every fan young and old raise their scarves in complete silence last year. Could be emotional again

strange how it’s Burnley again and the same result a distinct possibility ....

Assuming you mean width, I just don't trust Chilwell to hold the left flank properly. I also don't think Tielemans has the stamina required for the position.

We were pretty unlucky last season though. I remember their keeper made two outstanding saves in the first 20 minutes. Another good test for us I reckon as breaking down teams at home was our Achilles heel last time round. Personally I’m pretty confident after the Newcastle match. I won’t take Burnley for granted but we are a much more creative side these days. Worst case scenario we put Praet, Tielemans and Maddison on all at once and I don’t think they will be able to live with them.

I wouldn’t be too surprised if we start with a 442 diamond actually as Burnley play a classic 442 and cede possession to the opposition. Matching two strikers up against their CBs and having all three creative players in the mix would be a good way to cause them problems.

They do get the ball forward much faster than most teams which puts some pressure on an isolated wilf.  Less chance of us pressing high and turning over possession ......I’m sure Brendan has a plan

Well the thing is they literally play the ball long, and Ndidi has one of the best aerial clearance rates in the division. Evans is no slouch either. Again I don't want to underestimate them because route one can sometimes be incredibly effective, but I can see a game where we have Evans, Soyuncu and Ndidi acting as a 3 of sorts when we have the ball and literally everyone else pushing up to break them down. Usually one full back also drops back to watch out for a fast turnover, but because of the way they play we might not even do that. Their tactic is usually to go long to Wood or Barnes and win the physical battle, not look for the ball in behind the full backs who have vacated the space. That said Dwight McNeil is a promising player for them!

But I do agree, this isn't a team where we can rob them of the ball high up the pitch because Burnley don't make sideways passes. It will all be about fast passing and movement between the lines, hence why the attacking midfielders will be key to the result.

I know it’s FT but why would anyone want to drop the best defensive stopper on the division?

From the pre match press conference. Quite an interesting one today!

Rodgers on Vichai memorial plans...

Over the next few weeks, it’s to commemorate an incredible man and reflect on the legacy that he has left for us all. The club are amazing in terms of everything they do with the memorial garden being set up and paying tribute. The year has gone so fast. The club will show solidarity on and off the pitch, created by Khun Vichai.

I have a real sense of that since I came here, in the club and community .Community based club, they threw their lives into the community and that’s why their legacy will be a very strong here. The walk for Vichai shows that. They sing his name in every game and I’m sure over then ext few weeks and years, that will grow. It’s the feeling when someone leaves or passes, it’s when there is a true judgement of someone.

Will the anniversary be tough for the players?

It’s something that having come into here I’ve been able to recognise what an important figure he was, the feeling that he gave people, players and staff, you cannot buy that. He was close to many people. Players had a real affinity with him. When I’ve come in, I’ve tried to bring that emotion out in a positive way.

Maddison fitness update...

He’s fine. He had the knock leading into the Liverpool game and then he was ill while he was away. He’s trained a few days this week and he’s fine.

It was a difficult period for him because what was portrayed in an article in the press was not how it was. The kid went away with the international team, he took ill, he wanted to stay and hopefully be ready for the second game, but the England medical staff didn’t want his flu to spread and he was told to leave the camp. He was given some tablets by our guys here at the club. Watches the game by himself, goes out at half-time, probably make better decisions in his life, watch the second half at a poker table. His eyes have been opened to the wider world now. He knows in hindsight that he has made a mistake. I’ve seen various stories about his arrogance, they’re totally false. I’m not sure where they’re coming from. He’s a very talented player who is full of confidence but off the field he’s a great boy. He’s desperate to play for England, but doesn’t feel entitled. It’s really unfair, he’s a really good boy, he’s passionate, practices every day, and his dream is to represent England. Until that happens, he’s going to fight.

I’ve said to him that this is a safe environment for him. Sometimes I’ll say things and he might not always hear what he wants to hear. But if you know him, you know he’s not going to sit in a casino all night and spend thousands. He knows he’s made a mistake.

Another question on Maddison: 'Why is he being portrayed that way?'

I don’t know. Sometimes people make judgements and perceptions. He’s certainly not that way, his personality is on the field. He has a lovely way with people. He has improvements to make, he knows that. His belief is not misplaced. He knows he has talent but he knows he’s a working talent.

How is Maddison taking advice?

He’s a man. He’s 22. I sometimes say things that players don’t want to hear. I don’t want players to go into boy mode. You have to take it like a man. He takes it fine.

How's his ankle?

It’s coming along. He’s trained well. He was very good today. I expect him to be fit and ready. He worked really hard and showed his qualities.

What can you expect from Burnley?

With Sean’s teams, they’re super organised. They set up 4-4-2, with Barnes and Wood up front are a threat. They work tirelessly. They play a system that isn’t complicated but they play it very well. It’s a challenge. These are the types of games that we have struggled with over the past 18 months but we showed against Newcastle that we’re learning. And we love playing at home.

How will City cope against teams that sit deep?

It’s just constant. On the field, looking at positioning and the spaces. Looking at videos of where the team needs to be in certain moments. You need to have bodies on the inside the break through. You need to have runners off the ball. You need to have patience. But is has to be at speed. It might take an hour to tire the opponent and then you can make the breakthrough. The players are adaptable and we can change the system.

Going into the break after a loss?

You have to press reset after a defeat anyway. You have to practice all your movements on and off the ball. We reviewed the Liverpool performance and looked at what we needed to improve on. We deserved a result and that’s without being at our best. We changed the system and that worked well. Everyone could see it clearly wasn’t a penalty. We’ve played five of the top seven, and a number of those games away, and we’re in the top four. We’ve trained well and we’re looking forward to the game on Saturday.

How's the fitness?

They’re all very good. Dennis hasn’t been with us this week. He made his first start and for personal reasons he’s stayed behind in Belgium. He’s played games so he’s not lost too much fitness.

On the subject of Rooney/Vardy

Something that is personal. We offer support to players and family. We gave Jamie extra few days with his family. I’ve spoken to him, he’s fine.

Thoughts on Man Utd vs Liverpool...

Great game to be involved in. Liverpool are in a great moment in terms of how they are operating. Man Utd are going through a difficult period but at Old Trafford with the fans behind they will feel they can get a result.

What did you make of events in Sofia?

I thought Gareth and his staff and players were great. I’ve read some of the comments that they should have walked off. It’s a difficult situation. They’ve made it clear that there’s going to be a stance now. We’ve heard about sanctions but we’ve not seen them put in place. In this society, players should never have to be exposed to that. I was proud watching them, when I saw a group of young men fighting for their team-mates who were being abused. I felt proud watching it that this could be the beginning of a stance because we are trying to eradicate. Hopefully that can be the start. It’s something that we can’t stand for.

Like hearing this, shows we are prepared for teams like this and have the ability to go to a plan B if needed. Says to me we start 4141 and go to the Diamond after an hour if that's not working.

Have I misread it, or does this mean Praet is unavailable?

Sounds like he is fit but didn't train with the rest of the squad / trained alone. To me that has "coming on as a sub at 60" written all over it!

Think he meant, everyone trained today bar Praet from the international lot as he's been allowed to stay back in Belgium to get his end away. Will pitch up tomorrow looking the fcukin bollocks and waltz back in to the team if needs be on Saturday

That confident you only think we should field 10 players?

I admire that, but I reckon that Rodgers will controversially name an 11 man side.

Barnes as well up front and it's not a bad side provided the fullbacks can provide width.

But it's not something we should be playing against a side that plays a flat 4-4-2. We'll need to play wingers against them otherwise Ricardo and Chilwell will be double marked.

Next time I'll focus less on a dodgy shape and make sure I add Barnes like intended lol

That's the line up that I'd like to see other than Albrighton to start and replace with Barnes after an hour if needed.
