davieG Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 Premier League players could face the prospect of playing games nine days before the start of the 2022 winter World Cup in Qatar. Draft plans have been shared between clubs outlining the Premier League schedule around the tournament, being held from 21 November to 18 December. Fixtures could take place on 12 November and resume on 26 December, eight days after the final. The season would also kick off one week earlier and finish a week later. It means that there would be only six weekends without Premier League games. The issue will be discussed at the next Premier League shareholders' meeting in November. It is understood that Championship games will not take place during the World Cup, but the break for the second tier might not be as long as in the Premier League. Leagues One and Two will continue during the tournament. Any such proposals would clash with national associations' plans, given they usually allow several weeks for their players to prepare for the tournament. A winter break will be introduced to the Premier League for the first time this season in order to give players a rest. But it has been suggested that will be scrapped in the 2022-23 season, raising questions about player fatigue. Uefa has said a decision on the scheduling of that season's Champions League and Europa League will not be made until 2021.
Izzy Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 I detest absolutely everything about this World Cup already. It’s just plain wrong having it in the desert during November and December.

It's going to be a shit show
StanSP Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 what an absolute clusterfvck this is going to be.

Part of what makes the World Cup special is enjoying the summer weather and having a beer, often watching the game in an outdoors setting with thousands of other people. Watching the World Cup in a massive jacket with gloves and a hat on just feels completely wrong. Even worse this World Cup will cause havoc for at least two seasons. The season it's on will be carnage, and I expect players will be knackered the following season too. And this doesn't even reference Qatar’s appalling human rights record among essentially a slave labor workforce who have literally been worked to death to build stadiums.
Nalis Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 I'm alright with a winter world cup as a one off if it was given to New Zealand/ Australia or something, not a country awarded it for the wrong reasons.
Izzy Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 I don’t often get angry about things I can’t control, but the decision to award this WC to Qatar in winter has made me really fvckin angry. How dare FIFA fvck about with the jewel in the crown of the beautiful game. And don’t go giving it the ‘we’re spreading the game globally’ BS either you money grabbing bastards.

davieG Posted 24 October 2019 Author Posted 24 October 2019 FIFA doesn't seem more legit or moral since the demise of Blatter I suspect they've learnt from his mistakes and are able to disguise their money grabbing ideas better under the guise of equality etc. Yeah I know this was Blatter time but if they were genuine theier first action should have been to cancel this whatever the financial cost......
st albans fox Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 It doesn’t matter to us. - all our international’s will be playing for yanited by 2022 ........
Ashley Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 I follow England home and away but Qatar 2022 can seriously get the **** in the bin. Corrupt ****ers taking back handers to get it over there in the first place. Not that I'm better or anything but Russia 2018 should have been England 2018. Ourselves and Germany could hold a tournament tomorrow our infrastructure is that good. England wont get a WC or Euros until about 2030 if not later...
HybridFox Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 Behold the new 6am pre-work kick off to show Sky care about fans commitments
urban.spaceman Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 Politics and obvious arguments aside it will be interesting to see how this impacts on us and the Premier League in general. We had 10 players out in Russia although only a few of them actually played regularly through the tournament (Kasper, Wilf and Maguire). 3 years from now who knows how strong our squad could be? We'll never let an exodus happen so in the two summers leading up, I can see us losing only two players from the first XI as it is at the minute. Then there's whoever we've brought in, first team and squad wise. One thing's for sure, we'll have one of the best training facilities in the ****ing world to be able to deal with it.
stripeyfox Posted 24 October 2019 Posted 24 October 2019 If the FA (and other national associations) had one shred of integrity they would walk away from this World Cup. It is the most bent decision ever made by FIFA.

If the football associations had bigger balls then they could just decline to participate and threaten to set up their own tournament in the Summer.

If the "big" FA's broke away - England, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Brazil plus a few other big names it would be amazing. They could topple FIFA overnight, but maybe they're all balls deep in FIFA money to risk rocking the boat?

It would work

Nicolo Barella Posted 25 October 2019 Posted 25 October 2019 Assuming we're still decent by then, we're going to get so fcked by the World Cup. We already have pretty much our whole starting 11 being international material, along with a few subs. Going to be ruthless.

Footballwipe Posted 25 October 2019 Posted 25 October 2019 I won't lie, the day of the 2018/22 announcements was utterly depressing. The genuine hope and possibility of having 2018 in England and 2022 in Australia snuffed out by one of the most corrupt organisations in the world. I've read a few books on FIFA and currently in the process of reading one published in 1998 focusing on Havelange. You genuinely feel a bit grubby when you've finished. It's almost comical how greedy and self serving they are. The whole movement and jiggling of world football to accommodate this mess is a joke.

FIFA's corruption is part of a wider systemic problem, and won't be resolved until we solve the issues at the root. (quietly, but it rhymes with "bapitalism")
