Poch v Ranieri.

I am still sad we sacked Ranieri, although it was the right move in footballing terms. Kind of wish he'd retired after the title winning seasons and ridden off into the sunset.

The title of the thread got me thinking though, the difference between how Ranieri and Poch handled the run in that season was crucial. Say what you like about Ranieri's tactics and man management, the way he took the pressure of the players towards the end of that season is genius. Also the way he created the slightly cheesy 'little old Leicester' vibe, it riled Tottenham I think, and still does.

I think the thing is that the media saw our fairy tale  as if it belonged to them they were breaking the news about it it was there story . And how dare we sack the man responsible for it but we all know the fairy tale started for us as fans when Vichai walked into the club. A man that demanded resilts and i think saw the club as a whole which is why he acted decisively and always considered was it in the best interest of the club i dont think it was just league position that got Claudio the sack we had been lower in the table under Pearson but he was still given time to pull off the great escape.

We’re (were) small enough that pundits demanded we are grateful to a fault. Imagine if Sheffield United get into Europe then sack Wilder after some bad results. Same thing would happen. There are differences of course but the story is the same: small club should be grateful for any success and not demand more. Spurs have had four CL seasons and a final. In most pundits eyes they’re no longer small and so don’t need to be grateful to a fault.

Ive been thinking. Why do 5he spurs owners and board not get the same hate from pundits and media for sacking Poch as we got for sacking Ranieri, in tbh very similar circumstances. We won the premier v they sat in the top 4 or 5 for the previous 4 seasons and a European final.

Good question. I guess we gave Ranieri less time? Spurs gave Poch nearly a whole year to turn their form around.

I remember the Swansea away game, 2-0 down at half time and Claudio took Simpson and Fuchs off and replaced them with Amartey and Chilwell :frusty:

I'm not saying it was the wrong decision btw 😂

Whatever else happened after, the many great Ranieri quotes from that season will last forever.....

"We are champions League man, c'mon"

Because a lot of people that didn't know about football were interested in the whole Leicester winning the Premier League under Ranieri thing. So the best thing to do is push a dramatic narrative. Maud from the bingo hall loved Ranieri and thought he was the second coming, Maud hasn't got a clue what a Poch is though.

I think people saw getting rid of ranieri akin to something like sacking your grandad because he couldn't lift heavy boxes anymore. Although the circumstances of winning the premier league and the following season, when he turned back into the tinkerman,  were not quite as obvious as many not connected with Leicester would believe, he did have the power to charm the pants off anyone.

Did Poch do that well? Is it hard to finish in the top 4/6 consistently with spurs very able squad?

He built that squad though.

When he took over he inherited the likes of Lennon and Adebayor.

I think that is very true. Mourinho will go through the bounce period there but he will soon start to Alienate some of the players like he always does. Let's hope it is sooner rather than later!

here is the difference...

poch was ambitious - and a couple of summers ago he got spurs to the point when if they just kicked on and ed one or two players then he could reach glory - he record in spending wisely was good - spurs may have never gotten to that position again for year - yet Levy would take the risk,  Since then poch has been grumpy ever since - even the Champions league final was overshadows by talk of his own future - the whole things was inevitable.

yet at Leicester we all loved raniari - and so when things started to go wrong - we hoped he could turn it around.  yet like other managers on a duff track he stuck to his ideas -  (presumably he too was convinced he could turn it aground) -  and when if became clear that he would not or could not change then the board had a difficult choice to make.  It is  a great sadness for all of us - but his resolution that mean the had to be sacked was also  belief and spirit that won the premier league - two sides of the same coin.

Tottenham get far more media coverage so the press were more interested in them, after the title win I doubt many outside the Midlands area were that bothered until we had the temerity to change a situation that was looking rapidly like relegation and the soul of football died with us ungrateful twats sacking a manager who had overseen six games without a goal, an FA Cup defeat at a League One team and rumours of squad dissatisfaction.

Plus Tottenham now have the press' dream in Mourinho in charge to compensate for any loss of Pochettino.

He took them from being on the periphery to being very much comfortable top 4. You could argue that due to his arrival at Spurs (and the struggles of Arsenal / United / Liverpool) we now talk about a "top 6" and not a "top 4."

Spurs are crap. If they didn't play in London they'd not be considered bigger than us. Same kind of weirdos think Everton are huge, neither have won anything since colour telly.

Spurs would be lucky to win a colour telly, never mind some silverware.
