Right, I'm back. I hurt my back back in October, nothing serious, but then tried to come back too soon and in Feb I did it in properly and did some nerve damage, numb foot, couldn't walk. I'm now back to very light runs. I used the C25K programme to come back slowly. I'm on week 6 and running for about 20 mins slowly. It is a right come down from 2 hour runs, playing footy etc to overnight not being be to stand up. I can say that I have a new respect for C25Kers that do it for the first time. I found the first week incredibly difficult to do which is effectively only 8 mins of running. Will hopefully be back at it fully in 3 months (if I don't over do it).

After a bit of inspiration. Last long run of my training tomorrow (18.64 miles ) and I’m thinking laps of somewhere. Did 20 miles at Thornton Reservoir a few weeks back and it destroyed my soul but was great to fuel etc. Is there anywhere else like this you’d recommend to run at?

Yeah….  Try Watermead

I haven’t run for 4 weeks as I’ve hurt my back 😞

Just done my longest run in months (probably longer). 9 mile plod on country lanes and fields. Not quick by any means (just a plod), but it’s the mileage that counts.

Lovely evening tonight to be out for a run.

I don’t think my ankles will be thanking me in the morning.

Anyone on here ever broken their toes?

I broke two on my right foot about 2 months ago and they've still not healed properly. The Doc told me to just let nature take it's cause rather than break/re-set them as they're a bit wonky

I tried running about a month ago but just made it worse so now feeling unfit and deflated. I'm hoping to go on the treadmill if the gym opens on April 12th and hopefully a softer surface than roads will help.

Such a pisser as I beat my 5km PB just before December lockdown and was tracking to get under 24 mins which was good for me.

Ask to see a specialist. Toes look useless but are key to balance - especially running up and down hills!

It’s boring but maybe start doing light core work every day for a bit. I had spinal surgery over a decade ago and until I started my core work and also losing a bit of belly - my back always played up.

Yep, I agree, I need to do some core work plus work on flexibility, at 50 I'm now starting to stiffen up. I've tried searching Youtube for beginners yoga or runners stretching and get overloaded by the amount of results, plus I don't know if they know what they are doing. Has anyone got a recommendation for someone to follow?

I've not got around to doing it personally, but the recommendation I've always heard has been Yoga with Adriene. She has a playlist of videos specifically focussing on running, which are apparently quite good even for beginners.

I really want to bulk up a little bit for the summer, problem is I don't want to lose all the progress I've made with my running. I've been doing 2 weight days and 2 runs a week at the minute but not sure if I'm just losing any muscle I've gained when I go for a run...

Anyone know of a good way to do both?

I was running more during the lockdown till the gyms re opened and in the same situation.I lost about a stone with running but it was more my muscle weight I lost.

I'm at the gym 3 days a week and run the other two weekdays .

I just do shorter runs and try push it a little bit to get muscles working as well as the cardio side.

Can anyone help me set my heart zones on my Garmin? I've tried a few different ways and they seem to be set either way too low or way too high. Do you base your zones on %HRR, BPM or  %Max.HR. I tried googling it but disappeared down a search hole. ta.

How are people coping with the recent heat?  I've changed to morning runs.. but even then it's sometimes roasting!!  I never thought I'd miss those cool winter evenings!!😄

I know what you mean, I’ve actually been doing some treadmill runs whilst it’s been very hot.

not ideal but the heat makes me run awfully and slowly and I just don’t enjoy it as much

All you can do really, go early. Or really late but personally, I don't like evening runs. I tend to struggle more in the heat but that is natural. Some people thrive in it though!

Just come back from a week in Devon and I did a morning run every day through the hills/coast. So nice to have a change of scenery although the elevation was high. Much enjoyed though. Now back to the grind...

Went to ParkRun for the first time in 2 years at the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's such a fantastically run event and so great that it's remained free for all this time.

My local one has what feels like a vertical hill just before the first mile mark and I'd naively forgotten how much I hated it. It's great once you're up though as it's effectively a steady 2 mile decline. Managed to get inside the top 25 for the first ever time too, which was a nice bonus.

Depressing to look back at how quick I was a year ago compared to now. I’ve lost a fair bit of fitness after Covid but will get back into it, the main difference is on the mental side. I have no desire to push as hard as I would have a year ago which is a shame.

Re starting my exercise routine today though.

4 weeks into parkrun, amazing the difference in trying to maintain pace when running with others compared to the lone runs over the past year. I thought my improved base of fitness would have helped me but I really am struggling at pushing myself to maintain the speed. Shows the difference between running by yourself or with others. Enjoying it though, as a nearly 30 year old I take great pleasure in beating the teenage lad who passed me on the last stretch last week, to the line today :D.

  • 3 weeks later...

Haven’t run for a while as I’ve joined a gym so swimming and treadmills - trying to keep things a bit lighter…

I’ve been running to a cardio zone level (140) which is easier to manage on a treadmill

Will get back out with a park run soon maybe…. Once I’ve shaken off this COVID bollox!
