Does this mean Sam Hughes has signed a new contract with us? As his contract was due to expire this summer and he isn't on the list. If so, I really hope he manages to kick on from his injury issues, still rate him highly :)

Literally beat me to it ;)

Seem to remember Georgie T played in one of the big friendlies a couple of years ago for the 1st team, had an absolute shocker and was stuck in the U23’s ever after. Shame really he looked a prospect at Cov and he’s ‘one of our own.’

Bit of a shame how it worked out for Thomas, with hindsight he was possibly better off playing competitive senior football with Coventry in League One and developing there rather than spending years in the u23 system save for a few seemingly unsuccessful loans.

What we need to remember is the huge leap players have to make when stepping up the first team. The club staff watch these players every day and obviously don't think it's worthwhile keep them on.

Players like Johansson and Thomas will find themselves decent teams soon enough (if they haven't already). I thought Thomas looked good, but I've learned before that it's relatively easy for players to look good in the ressies.

Didn't we pay Cov £1 million for Thomas? They needed the money , Thomas must have had a pay rise and if they still want him he can rejoin Cov for free now. The only losers here are our club.

What are you basing the "decent keeper" statement on? The only time he's played for us he was poor and surely he can't be cheaper than Johansson. How much is our "third string" keeper earning?

There is no point keeping a young player like Johansson as 3rs choice as he needs game time. He could prob be number 1 at a league 1 club and then move up the leagues. And most top clubs have an experienced 3rd choice keeper who will probably never play but is a good training buddy for the 1st team keepers. Guaranteed Kasper and Ward will get more from having Jaku as a training buddy than a young lad with zero experience and has never played 1st team football. Sometimes decisions are made with the bigger picture in mind like with us keeping Wes.

But got some £££ in the process

Do they earn more than L1/2 players?

We also need players that are better or better prospects. We really need to up the numbers that have the ability to go on loan to Championship sides not L1/2

We don't just want players who are only there to win the U23 League.

He wouldn't have moved here for less money.

Always sad to see players released, as in effect we are making these young players redundant and nobody wants to lose their job (unless it is their choice of course) and it must be devastating for them but it is a cut throat business, and in the current climate we have to trim the wage bill etc and there is no point holding on to players who are ultimately unlikely to progress to the first team squad. I hope they all find new clubs or forge a new career for themselves.  One hopes that the club will do everything they can to help them find new clubs or provide suitable career advice for those who's future will be outside of football.

It is an unfortunate fact of the footballing world that many promising youngsters reach a ceiling and fail to progress to fulfill their potential for any number of reasons. However, those that have been released should take encouragement from the fact that it does not necessarily mean that the door is permanently closed to them. There are any number of players who were released at a young age only to come good later, you do not have to look any further than our own squad and a certain Mr Vardy for proof of that.

Would imagine OJ Bosworth will become the U23 keeper, given he’s signed a professional contract and has been involved in the England set up this season.

IIRC we paid £500k compensation to Cov for him and offered him double the money that they were offering him. They couldn't compete with our offer.

He’s popular in the dressing room, low wages and is actually a decent keeper.. don’t see the problem really

Wow how we have changed. 25k a week for a 3rd choice keeper considered low.

Bring back Conrad.

Well we did pay 12 mill for a backup keeper with no intention of them competing for the #1 shirt.

Shame, really liked the look of Johansson every time I've seen him play.

So according to the Mercury Hughes has signed a new deal. He’s 23 now, so too old for under 23s next season. Will we see him in first team squad next season? I can’t see it personally

He can still play U23's as you can name a certain amount of older players. Bizarre we have kept him though.

Even more bizarre that he would sign a new contract, unless there was some sort of clause. Can he sign a contract so we can sell him? Maybe he feels he can get more money signing a contract here then going out on loan.

Another one who made a mistake coming here, three years ago he was an ever present and highly thought of at Chester in the National League, you'd think he could have gone to a league one/two club at that point. Instead he's spent the next three years with our u23s, which included one loan where he couldn't get in the Salford team.
