Definitely an Enigma. Crap myself when ever it looks like he has a decision to make. Needs a run of games before his is in any sort of form but my 'dicky ticker' cant take a run of games with Amartey anymore.

To think what awaits us when Faes inevitably gets sent off at some point.

I believe Amartey has played 17 of the 24 Premier League games this season?

How much of a "run of games" does he need to no longer be the worst player on the pitch?

Whilst he is poor, you have to question the logic of asking players to continually do something they can't do.

Like pass? Or tackle? Or simply get through a match without passing the ball straight to the opposition on the edge of your own box when under no pressure at all?

Can be world class on his day.

No. He can sometimes do some good defending, but world class players don't, when under no pressure, pass to the other team. Ever, never mind once or twice most games.

He has never been world class, but he hasn't been as bad as a lot make out and has been a solid squad player.

He's just about okay to have on the bench in case someone gets injured.

Makes at least one howler every game.

Exactly. And you simply can't afford to have a player who does that in your team.

That’s the fookin spirit! 👍

After last night's performance you have officially won this argument for good.

Hes a nice guy...does some things well but overall is nowhere near good enough for our starting XI

I'm convinced a decent manager would make him look semi competent. Imagine a world where he just had to head the ball and kick it, rather than having to try and play dangerous passes that offer no benefit and have lots of risk involved.

He still wouldn't be amazing, but he'd look like much less of a calamity.

I've stuck up for him in the past, he's had moments when he's looked reasonably ok as an option here and there if we need him to cover. But last night was disgracefully bad.

To be fair, the argument (for want of a better term) has raged on for ages and I’ve been hit with ridicule, abuse and everything else that goes with it. I must have been banned ten times for (add reason here) for replying pretty much just to responses in this thread alone.

We’ve had ‘cult status’, ‘he’s only a squad player so what do you expect’ and a whole host of tripe spouted for a long time. And of course ‘of course we should offer him a new contract, wouldn’t you’?

But I genuinely ain’t bothered about winning arguments and definitely not on here!
All I’m bothered about is seeing City do well. If that’s with Big Dan playing, good. I’ll usually agree when he’s played well.
But generally the chap is not good enough to play at this level and that’s true of pretty much whatever partner he’s alongside. I recollect he was a bit stronger alongside Fofana (I think) and did look ok when Faes joined the club.

But taking it all into account, the club needs better players than Amartey. But I would say that about a number of key positions at present. I stated in the summer that I looked at our squad and didn’t think it looked strong enough.

But last night, Amartey was dreadful. As in, really really bad. Reminded me of his performance against Forest in the cup last season.
Anyway, we’ll see what happens I guess. If he does re sign his contract and plays well enough, fine.

How he gets picked ahead of any other central defender in this whole club is a total mystery to me.... guy looks like he's won a raffle to play football!

This lad was signed as a back up CDM when we were in a pre Rodgers era where a CDM was expected to win the ball and lay it off simply to a more creative teammate. This suited Amartey as he’s a good tackler, happy to be a back up and isn’t a strong passer. Rodgers reinvention of the CDM role (much to the detriment of Ndidi) that prevents Amartey from being considered as a Rodgers CDM, ironically means he gets a lot more of the ball as a centre back and is asked to make passes that he’s simply not able to do. It’s not his fault, it’s Rodgers for expecting him to be first cover at centre back when it should be Soyuncu. Amartey is a utility player that has played lots of defensive roles but he’s first and foremost an old school CDM, then arguably he’s better considered as basic Danny Simpson style right back rather than the central defensive position that he has stumbled (literally) into.

I would bet my house that even Vestergaard would have given us better performances than this idiot. Sick to death of seeing him play for us.

This comment is mad revisionism. Last season he was fine in what he did for us.

He’s never been semi-competent under any of the managers we’ve had here, he’s just crap.

17?! :schlupp:

Having to play Amartey on a regular basis because you’ve mismanaged Soyuncu is peak Brendan Rodgers.

He was excellent against Man.City in the charity shield. He is an old fashioned stopper , much like Morgan. Just don't ask him to be a ball player , the simple lay off to a midfielder should be the only pass he needs to make. Rodgers seems to think otherwise.

He absolutely wasn’t. He’s never been good enough for us.

I think he’d look alright in a low block team that has a bit more of defensive mentality (and confidence). I think that’s why he’s looked decent for Ghana most of the time.

Doesn’t suit our (overly) patient possesion style though. When he’s got the ball at his feet with decisions to make like the poster above says he just looks awful.

Probably time for him to go and find a more suited club for himself.

Please don’t compare Amartey to Wes Morgan.
