Crinklyfox 1,915 Posted 12 October 2020 Report Share Posted 12 October 2020 Football is our national sport and this is a battle for its soul. Each football team in the country has its fans and to many of them the team is part of their lives. No matter which league they play in, a team has fans who follow it through good times and bad, and who revel in any glories that the team achieves. The structure in place at present makes it possible for minnows to become giants. Historically small teams have risen to become bigger teams, and successful teams have fallen on hard times and suffered relegations. Take those possibilities away and you take away the heart of the game for most fans. Taking the present as indicative of the future in terms of which are the 'big' clubs is an unsound premise. Going back in time to any historic year will show different clubs being successful. I picked 1030-31 season at random and found that the top six clubs that season were Arsenal, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth, Huddersfield Town and Derby County. How appropriate would it have been to favour those clubs at that time with a deal that left then forever in a favourable position? Of course commercially there is a lot of money to be made from those who don't have the affiliations of the committed fans and they may not be too affected by this proposal, but for the core fan base of each club this proposal is a nightmare. This has to be defeated.

StriderHiryu 16,960 Posted 12 October 2020 Report Share Posted 12 October 2020 We don’t want too many Leicester Citys.” These were the words spoken by a senior figure from the Premier League’s ‘big six’ clubs, in the kind of high-end London hotel you can easily imagine. “Football history suggests fans like big teams winning,” the official continued, to the group of business people and media figures present. “A certain amount of unpredictability is good, but a more democratic league would be bad for business.” Exactly whose business would it be bad for? And why is football even viewed that way? The answers are among the biggest problems for the game right now. https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/champions-league-superclubs-liverpool-man-utd-barcelona-real-madrid-a9330431.html

A business that stinks of self-serving piss and sh!t maybe, but a business nonetheless. Businesses run on manageable expectations, and outliers such as us do not fit such a manageable environment. But aside from the harsh realities :- Genuinely, f**k 'em, we won, so get better at our own jobs and stop trying to sabotage others.

I can see why EFL clubs would like it as it's a short term fix for them and worry about the potential downsides if they are ever fortunate enough to be back in the PL for very long. I cannot see any of the clubs not mentioned in the big 6 + the 3 longest serving PL teams that would be an advocate of this and surely they'd need 14 teams to agree to this or have I missed something? I can’t see it getting through mate, not the point though is it seems like they are continually trying to come up with proposals to ring fence the higher league positions. Are we in this +3? Obviously one is Everton.

Are we in this +3? Obviously one is Everton. Everton, West Ham. Southampton. Independent has a piece from a paid-up Scouse hack saying: Spurs are broadly supportive. Arsenal, Chelsea and City have concerns. The Premier League clubs threatened with the removal of the one-club, one-vote system are furious. Telegraph have pointed out that Spurs have a 135M rebate on the stadium from the proposals - no wonder they're supportive!
GingerrrFox 2,020 Posted 12 October 2020 Report Share Posted 12 October 2020 Considering the Scousers claim to hate anyone who believes in Capitalism and like to refer to people as “Tory willy pullers” every 5 minutes. It’s quite ironic that the club they support has turned out to be the biggest bunch of Capitalist willy pullers in football. These American ***** want to ruin the English game. They don’t want competition, they want a ring-fenced business.

Danizen 2,332 Posted 12 October 2020 Report Share Posted 12 October 2020 They said 9 clubs would have the special vote but only 6 votes would be needed to pass through any major changes in distribution of revenues/prize money, European places, scheduling, quotas etc... As if we don't know what kind of changes would be proposed and we don't know which 6 clubs would pass them through.

HOWEVER, let think about what that means …….. all clubs basic annual tv money take reduces from 120m to 90m …………….that's far better for the top six to cope with than the other 14 and perpetuates the growing gap between them and the rest However once they have their 6 votes what's to stop them reducing this and changing other stuff. They won't reduce the money, they will just pay it in kind, by generously letting these EFL clubs take an (enforced) number of big 6 youngsters on loan (no option to buy) Edited 12 October 2020 by Dahnsouff

Swapping parachute payments for 25% merely dilutes the money and makes it less likely a different team can get into the EPL

Yep. It would only be the start. If it went through the top six could then in theory vote to keep all the money for themselves the week after. Hopefully Southampton, Everton and West Ham realise they’re being used as pawns.

No thanks I’m out That sort of indignation is understandable, but its madness to deny the reality of the situation. The Premier League makes loads of money precisely because those teams are in, not in spite of them. I am not suggesting we become subservient or sycophantic to them, but to fail to recognise this reality does not suggest a workable solution will be found.

Mickyblueeyes 2,499 Posted 12 October 2020 Report Share Posted 12 October 2020 At least Man United don’t pretend to be something they’re not. Liverpool with this “it means more” and their socialist manager always try to come across as “ethical” and it ends up pissing you off more. This kills club football in this country and takes away any “business” element where the expenditure of a club is taken away by its competitors to stop others moving forward. It’s all good and well welcoming new money to the league but Liverpool and their owners will destroy our nations game and the sheer enjoyment of a pastime. They should be stopped and kicked out. I can’t believe any scousers are proud of their owners proposing this.
