Castagne is defensively head and shoulders above JJ currently anyway and if you consider Barnes is our first choice LW - one thing that Harvey isn’t notorious for is his defending/tracking back so quite a simple decision for Brendan on this one.

JJ pre injury was amazing but this season hasn’t got close to those levels and you can’t solely say that’s down to him playing on the right rather than the left as him with lackluster tackles leading to goals like they did against PSV or being simply taken out of the game by a diagonal ball need coaching out of his game.

Which have no correlation to what side of the pitch he’s on but happened numerous times since his return.

I will say though that JJ is a very good member of the squad and can see him being a first choice FB for years just want those pre-injury levels back.

... you would factor which side he is playing on, as partly a reason for his levels being so under what we had previously experienced, prior to his injury!!!

Caglar suffers when played on the wrong side or even the right side in a three. Someone recently posted about a United defender who admitted he struggled to adjust in his defensive role, because he had to focus on the way the ball came to him and the unnatural way he had to play to counter it.

The diagonal balls over his head are down to reading the game and taking up certain positions, not issues we were laying at his door prior, so just something that will resolve itself in a stable and consistent role.

A good response and get that but can still pick on too many mistakes PSV as mentioned or being the wrong side of Targett against Newcastle in the build up to their 95th minute winner.

I’m merely stating that in my opinion and this appears to be backed by Rodgers that right now, Castagne is head and shoulders above JJ defensively.

I genuinely scratch my head about the underrating of Timmy on here.

Have his injuries curtailed his initial great start? 100%

However, as per his performance and goal against Brentford and many others since he’s returned from injury…he’s shown enough class to be considered in the conversation as one of our starting FB’s if ask me.

...I  have always stated that Castagne is the best defender in a one on  one situation!!!

He has had to cover either side this season due to injuries and that was not the reason why he came here to play. JJ is exciting and very much suited to the left side and Castagne has been a great asset on the right when Ricardo was not available.

As for the Newcastle goal, JJ was attempting to get behind the Newcastle defence, playing wide and level with their backline. His poor decision to go off the pitch to prevent the ball from going off the pitch at the Newcastle by-line, while the Newcastle defender was trying to shepherd it out of play, opened us up for the counter, as JJ had effectively taken himself out of the game by his decision.

Justin has got better in recent weeks but last night he did look much more at ease on the left, just suits his game.

Hes a much better left back than right and now Ricardo is hitting form.

Genuine selection headache as Castagne is probably the best defender of the lot but Ricardo and Justin better going forward. I don't really understand how Justin has ended up on the right more than not.

Justin and Barnes last season got us in the top 3 the entire time from gameweek 1 through to their injuries in Jan and Feb respectively, defending well and scoring plenty of goals. Let's hope they can get back there. Castagne is overall our best defender at full back (on the right) but he's never got anywhere near Justin's complete performance level that he showed last season.

Yeah agreed, it's a great dilemma and hopefully he can get the best out of them all as opposed to having 3 strikers and seemingly struggling to keep them firing.

If we need to keep an eye on his nuerological state, at least he can play bench side both halves.....  a wierd tactical consideration

EDIT. an intercranial bleed can take days to show up on a scan. Feeling not quite right for a few minutes might not overly concern a neurologist with history and scans, but better resting than training for a few days.

Brendan sparodically running out and asking him how many fingers hes holding up,  might confuse the heck out of Jose though

Hope he is still with us next season

Agreed.

By a huge margin our best FB at defending and particularly in 1 on 1 situations.

I genuinely feel quite sad seeing Ricardo now, one of my good friends (for his sins) is a Chelsea season ticket holder and said when Essien did his ACL that he was a shell of a player afterwards and can’t get that thought out of my head about Ricky.

he's a good player and I'd like to keep him but if we need to sell to buy he's a prime target, JJ and Ricardo at RB with Thomas at left back plus others who can cover means its a position we could sacrifice one

Having seen Thomas at LB, I can confirm it isn't a position we could sacrifice on.

Thomas was forced into the Premier league by our injury crisis but its evident he's a long way off the level required.

Needs a good loan spell away to really master his trade. Its not his fault,  there's definitely a player in there, just not currently.

its funny people kept talking about Thomas getting done but the goals were coming from JJ/Riccy at right back, he's 20 and has already come on leaps and bounds and there is no reason to think he won't continue to improve at the same rate.

Also we are a better side when he, KDH and Barnes are all in unison on that side, the interplay between the 3 plays a big part in our attacking play and it has suffered with JJ and Castagne there as neither will go outside

He wasn't the worst today. Laid some good crosses in eventually. But still generally average.

Agreed, just think we could do better with any money we may get.

We should improve on other parts of the squad first!
