I don't particularly mind rewarding academy graduates like him and Hamza providing the money is right. I think the culture of having players for the academy to look up to has to be right and the young lads need players in the dressing room to be able to talk to and feed off of.

But you know for a fact that the likes of Ayew and Soumare will be offered an extension to "protect value" and they will still leave for nothing.

He’s one of the most limited players I’ve ever seen play for us. He can’t attack, can’t run with the ball, he’s weak, poor in the air. A nice left foot yes but seriously, is this the best we have these days? Depressing

Probably falls in the category of good enough starter in the Championship and good enough backup in the Prem. Let’s face it, we’re in a financial mess and would’ve been disappointed to see him leave on a free. Assuming the wage isn’t ridiculous, all in I’m pleased he’s signed up.

I’m happy with this, some people are just so negative it’s unreal

The ones leaving negative comments have clearly not watched his performance closely during the back end of last season and this season so far…. They’d also be the ones that would go nuts when he left on a free next year…

They’re basing it on a memory of his lapse in confidence/ form a few years ago…

it really is yawnsville…

This a a good piece of business…. He’ll not be on mega wages and certainly has a resale value that is now protected

Different managers, Martí seems to like him

He liked Bilal, McAteer and Coady but that didn't keep them here. Get what you say though.

If it means we can get some money for him rather than seeing him leave for nothing, cool. If it's with a view to him continuing to play regularly for us long-term, not very cool.

Here for the meltdown lol

Hopefully low wages. He’s not a bad character who needs removing from the club. I think my concern is more his suitability for Marti’s system.

4 years is a bit misleading as it’s 3 additional. As others have said, he would leave for free otherwise as we can surely get something in a year or so for him. Possibly a bit like Ndidi.

Will be above average wage in the championship, but probably less than he was on before and a more reasonable salary for where we're at.

Last time we were relegated, we were in a position where if things were done right, we could have settled back into being a mid table PL team. But obviously they weren't.

This time round, even if we go up and recruit really well on and off the field, we could still be straight back down. So having a lad who's good enough for this level and probably an ok back up at the level above, is reasonably sensible business.

1) We over pay and have done for years

2) He came though when we were a PL club so would have been on a decent wedge

3) As a free agent he could get a decent signing on fee abroad.

I bet he's getting paid above the championship average wage.

Most sources online suggest £15k a week.

No idea what the average Championship wage is, but we're not an average Championship club and it's a long way below our average wage.

I don't mind it.

Football is about resale/profits these days (beyond anything else other than corruption) so if this means we get a bigger fee for anyone wanting to buy him in 2026 or 2027 then so be it.

On the footballing side, he's a competent player. Nowhere near as bad as some make out. He's standard fare for Championship level and will occasionally do a job against some sides in the PL. We could do better, but we could also do a whole lot worse!

Anyone thinking we had a reasonable transfer window, this is (another) reminder of incompetence at the top. Why such a long deal? Absolutely crazy. You can get much better for a fraction of the wages.

Just from a quick search online, as a reference.

Average Salary: Second-tier league of English football is known as 'EFL Championship' or just Championship has average player salary of around £11,000 per week which is higher then some of the other top divisions in European football.

I’d say there’s probably about a 30% chance he leaves on a free anyway lol

Comparing Ricardo at right back to Luke Thomas at left back is like comparing Kate Middleton to Bonnie Blue.

Whoever turned down money from Hoffenheim and has given a new contract (TO 2029!!!) needs sacking.

His attitude over the last five years I have on good authority is shocking.

Anyone saying they agree with the new contract “on the right wage”, I assume means it’d be ok if he’s on £400 a week, not £40k?!

He will have fashioned a career with the sole strength of being able to kick a ball left footed. He’s not good in the air, he’s not a good tackler, and looks and behaves on the pitch like a pre pubescent boy.

Other than that, completely agree with the new contract.

I was just starting to get some enthusiasm back for the club & really looking forward to tomorrow's game, then this bombshell appears.

I was so looking forward to him leaving at the end of the season, along with most of the other deadwood. Why O why, the lad is useless & it's such a depressing thought that he could be seen as our regular starting left back
