Is it worth us winning corners or free kicks?

Many a time this season we seem to waste any advantage we may have in being awarded one!

Can't remember the last time we scored from a corner.

It's usually taken and ends up near the near post where it is headed away by the opposition.

Do we not practice these on the training ground?

I could say the same about free kicks, it;s not very often we seem to score from them.

But Madders practices them day in day out doesn't he?😂

Something is very amiss in this department, I honestly don't think the team work on them as a priority because if they do then its a fcukin disgrace. Maddison was without doubt the number 1 set pieces taker in 2018/19 and then since then he has been one of the worst. Doesn't add up.

Appalling to watch our corners really is pathetic.

Agreed.

With Maddison he has this aura of 'set piece specialist' following him but I do wonder if this is a hindrance. Tielemans is better at corners.

He was never that good begin with ... it was just a mirage created by some commentators (probably paid by his agent) and then some fans believed it without watching. (By the way, not the team’s fault. The ball often does not clear the first man.)

None of it makes sense.

We've got quality in the side and defenders who are great in the air.

I could handle how poor the stats are if we at the very least looked like scoring and it was down to bad luck, but the truth is it isn't any kind of advantage to us winning them.

Hmmmmm I'm not so sure it was a mirage. He equalled the record number of free kicks scored in a single season and was the number two chance creator in the whole of Europe or something daft like that and the biggest percentage of that was from set pieces. So he definitely arrived here and had a first season where his set pieces were excellent.

Convinced we dont practice them or even have a plan.

Reminds me of sunday league when our manager complained we dont score from corners. Never practised them it was just a random ball into the box.

Would rather we just play them short most of the time

...as soon as you do that, the offside law kicks in and the advantage is lost!!!

Unless we are choosing to shoot from outside the box any ball played in with the defenders still in the box increases an offside situation. If we cross into the box from the player receiving the ball from the corner taker, the angle becomes more difficult as the likelihood is the cross into the box is far too straight and down the keepers throat.

But imagine how bad he'd be if he didn't practice.

I tried finding some stats on our corner conversion to show how bad we were to a mate. Does anyone know where to find these?

I remember 2 from last season, but it seems like we’ve been bad for quite a while now.

In JM’s first 2 seasons I actually thought his delivery looked pretty good. No idea why but he’s lost the knack for it. To be entirely fair to him though, we don’t have great set piece attackers, so naturally it seems worse as even his good corners go unchallenged at times

Fofana is a bit of an issue on this subject. There has been a few times recently when the set piece delivery has been perfect and fofana has lacked either composure or technique to finish it. Evans has been equally as guilty in the past. Fofana will learn and his positioning is top class, I'm sure the staff are already working on this with him.

On a side note there always seems to be a lot of complaints about the first man being hit. There's a very slim margin with corners between hitting the first man and clearing everyone, the sweet spot is actually really technically difficult to hit and it'll never be a 100% success rate. I don't think it's as much of an issue as people make out and is something that is being over analysed due to poor results.

....I think hitting the first post with our corners is a big deal and an aspect of the game we need to focus on!!!

Clearing the first man increases the chance of us scoring, it does not guarantee us a goal, it just gives us a better opportunity.

Putting a player at the near post forces the opposition to put someone in-front of him and perhaps behind him taking them away from positions  they would rather be defending. Any contact made where the ball is helped onwards from that position gives the opposition no chance to react, we just need someone at the back post, just incase.

As the percentage is so great, that we hit the near post, we do this as a matter of necessity, as we are not aiming for this scenario, it is just a back up move.

Certainly looks like we don't practice them, although Fofana has missed sitters from set pieces in the last 2 matches. Interesting to see that Zouma has already scored 4 goals in the PL this season. That's probably more than our CBs have scored in the past 2 seasons combined.

Anyone notice that Chilwell (remember him, tremendous attacking left back who we gave away to our parent club Chelsea) takes quite a few of the corners & set pieces for his new club, yet we never used him for that. To be honest the standard of our set pieces has been wank for a number of seasons

I often give things away for £50m

I'd rather have Gareth Gates take over PA announcements down the KP than Chilwell take out set pieces.
