We are missing 3 core players; with Ndidi’s arrival back from injury we have become more solid defensively, he offers that protection to the back line. Justin and Fuchs have done well but Ricardo and Castagne are an upgrade fullback wise, and improve our team ten fold. I do believe we are in a title race with about 5 other teams, Nobody is running away with it, if we can string some winning runs I do believe we will have a chance. But take every game as it comes and see what happens.

I agree. I think injuries will be a big factor in our season. We've done superbly so far with so many key players missing. The squad players who've stepped in deserve a lot of credit. JJ especially I think has been fantastic. All this first team football is clearly doing him a lot of good. However, I do think we'd be able to step up a level with Ricardo, Castagne and Soyuncu back in contention. WIth a bit of luck, they'll be back for the second half of the campaign.

I doubt we're going to win the title this season, but I think top 4 is a realistic goal. It's not that easy to get carried away, though, after last season's collapse.

Less than two weeks ago after the Sheffield United game I was genuinely having to defend my position on this forum that we wouldn't be relegated, how times have changed lol

For a club outside the ‘Big Six’ for us to compete in a European competition AND finish top six, although could

even be top four, would be a remarkable achievement as many find the Europa League a ‘burden’ in relationtk

 league placings.

Can we win it this season? Yes

Should we dream about the possibility? Yes
Are we likely to win it. No

If we finish top six - second year running, third time in six seasons - it's an amazing period in our entire history.

Enjoy the moments, enjoy the ride.

This.

And part of that ride was sticking a tenner on at 32-1 on Betfair Exchange this morning lol (Happy Christmas Betfair)

Do I think it'll happen? No, dunno, probably not, but those odds seem to reflect the likelihood about right to me.

Leicester City PL stats rank:

Goals - 3rd

Goals against - 7th

Shots  - 14th

Shots against - 10th

Possession - 8th

xG for - 5th

xG against - 8th

xG difference - 6th

Penalties - 1st

These are not the metrics of a title challenger

Any chance you could look at after 12 games in 15/16.... just for interest :)

Nope, 0 chance.

Top 4 is the best we can hope for, that's with some fantastic form and the other teams constantly slipping up.

I'd take 5th or 6th if offered it right now as we'll hopefully be able to attend games again in Europe next season.

We're also into the hard part of the EL now, we can't keep resting players and expecting to win, we've got to start playing 6 or 7 first teamers at the round of 16.

I knew somebody would reply with this, it was an entirely different style of play and was unsustainable to boot.

Manchester City and Liverpool have been top for near enough every metric over the past few seasons. Our league win was the exception to the rule but now to be in contention you have to have one of the very best attacks in the league, we don’t at the minute.

Are they top this season? Where can each teams metrics be seen? I think someone is going to surprise the elite this season but don't necessarily think it will be us, I think we will finish anywhere between 3rd and 7th.

Yes, I think we can; I doubt that we will, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was someone outside of the Usual Suspects.

The 'big' clubs are all in a certain amount of disarray this season, and I think empty stadia has been a great leveller.

Doesnt this season, with all its unusualness, plus the introduction of VAR, plus the difficulties of coping with Covid... suggest that the usual statistics are not necessarily relevant for 20/21.

Again.. im not saying we are going to win it, but, we are in as good a position as almost anyone and the past is not a fair indicator of the future for this season.

Also...at some point, the "big 6"  IS going to change and we are very well placed to step up.

But again.. id like to see the stats from 15/16, just for interest... because if you are using stats to say its not possible... then surely you have to include those stats in your drcision making... mind you.. im not a stats and numbers guy... so maybe you dont.

This thread reminds me of the Everton forum at the start of the season.  They had started well and had a thread titled "Will we do a Leicester?".  How we scoffed at their delusion and naivety.  I guess football fans are largely all the same.

We were ranked lowly for shots and possession but our xG numbers were pretty good, we had the second best expected goals figure. Our style of play is more similar to Manchester City's and Liverpool's now but at the moment most of our stats shake out as being around the 5th-10th best team in the league. Which is about right.

I agree the more unconventional nature of this season increases the randomness and variance but to win the league your underlying metrics have to better than ours at the minute without a lot of luck.

Thanks for those stats - really helps balance the argument out. I guess this means that pulling a rabbit out of the hat means needing a sharp increase in several vital areas.

One thing I will say is the players should have learnt from last years experience so it is possible we will finish higher than last season

umm... Watford was a bit like last season
