I really enjoyed his time here a superb player and one of the most streetwise midfielders we have, a shame he wasn't quite mobile/athletic enough to properly ably do himself justice in the Premier league.

Popular Post Ric Flair Posted 2 August 2021 Popular Post Posted 2 August 2021 Thomas and Barnes partnership please. Don't see what Bertrand has done in the last year or two in the PL that warrants him waltzing in here as 1st choice, but I suppose without Evans there's an experience question mark. Really mediocre going forward though. 15
Daggers Posted 3 August 2021 Posted 3 August 2021 Bertrand has struck me as a total downgrade over anyone we’ve had over the last few seasons - I’m genuinely at a loss to see how he improves us in any measurable fashion. 3

I’ll be surprised if he starts beyond the odd cup or europa match or against PL opposition that’s weak or because Thomas isn’t fit. That said, it’s only preseason and he’ll lack fitness and form, maybe there’s more to come from him beyond a bit of competency and experience.

But then that experience ought not to need a preseason and it wasn’t marshalling an awful lot against QPR. I remain distinctly meh about him. 1

I remain distinctly meh about him. My thoughts too. I think in time he will prove his worth as an experienced squad player but I don't see him coming straight in and doing well, but my fear is he'll be picked from the off and we'll have to put up with it. We really can't afford to have a non 3xistent attacking threat from one full back spot and one on the wing, it will hamper us. 1

Really mediocre going forward though. Wow super harsh. Bertrand has looked good in all of his games so far and has gotten forward a lot more than expected. Some of his link up play has been good given he’s only been with us for a few weeks. Thomas is a gem and one for the future but playing Bertrand in the bigger games offers more defensive stability, same as playing Evans. Luke Thomas will 100% get there but he’s still developing physically and mentally. We will have plenty of games to share between the two and I’d expect them to share that spot. Well until JJ returns but don’t expect that till 2022. 4
Jakemoore Posted 3 August 2021 Posted 3 August 2021 Is anyone going to this? I bought tickets last week but I’m not sure I fancy travelling up from Kent to sit in an empty KP…

He was crap vs Burton and admittedly I've only seen the highlights for the QPR game but he looked out of position a bit and didn't see anything of note going forwards. For Southampton he's never been overly impressive going forward but a general solid full back but that's regressed even more in recent years. I think defensively he ought to be very handy for us but I don't expect him to be very good in attack and we shouldn't think otherwise else we'll be in for disappointment. But he's been signed as a squad player and I don't think he's earning the right to walk in to a starting spot. Thomas and Barnes as a pairing is essential given our limitations in the pairing down the right.

He’s got a lovely left foot and is a solid full back, he was class between 2014-2017 (obviously towards the end of his career) but taking off the blue tinted goggles I’d still put him slightly ahead of Thomas…. 1

He's better than Simpson going forward but that's hardly a glowing endictment is it? He's a squad player, I put the pecking order at Justin, Thomas and then Bertrand.

Well Justin is injured, I already don’t really trust Soyunucu to marshal a back line so I’m not sure how I’d feel about a 19 year old being thrown in to that, but I guess we’ll see! 1

Hales Posted 3 August 2021 Posted 3 August 2021 So Kasper, Dennis and Danny are the only ones fit with no pre-season playing time. Will he give them 45 minutes like the rest?
