Even the variously-criticized Vestergaard and the much-criticized Amartey were not as "poor" as alleged. They each made the odd miscues (Amartey with two horrid passes to the opposition), but their overall showing was more than decent.

 

Interesting reflection.  I was fortunate enough to be at the stadium and have not watched it back.

 

On the second half we seemed to cede possession repeatedly.

 

I did not mean Vestergaard is not up to the level of the other players.   Amartey and Perez each put in a shift but both are below the level of the other players.  Perez was not as frustrating on Saturday.

We got 66 points with a depleted squad and were forced into a formation that we were often lacklustre in. 

Our home record was 9-1-9 and away it was 11-5-3.

 

It's likely our home record will improve more than our away record worsens (the caveat is we almost certainly won't win at 3 of the big 6 again) so with a fit, deeper squad (& a rejuvenated Iheanacho) we should surpass our points total; whether that's enough to overcome 4th place I'm less sure.

I'm not a mathemagician but I think its a case of optimism over statistical inevitability to predict anything above 8th at this stage. We would need a lot of teams to collapse, pretty dramatically, to place higher.

Anything less than 9th would be a disappointment looking at the fixture list, recent improved performances and the players coming back into the squad.

 

Land 9th and I'll carry some optimism into next season.

Gonna be 9th or 10th - which, in the big picture (injuries mostly, but also VAR and 3 poor signings), is really quite acceptable, and a lot better than it was looking at one stage. Thank heavens for Kasper, Big Dan, Maddison and KDH.

Having had a look at the fixtures, we've got two games in hand over most sides in the league, and we've got a very favourable looking run-in. Watford, Everton TWICE, Norwich, Newcastle. Genuinely starting to feel like we might be able to bridge the gap and finish the season respectably. If we hit some form at the right time, with players returning from injury, who knows.

Working through each fixture 8th if I am being optimistic but 9th or tenth given our injury struggles would not be bad. Palace are going well but one of West Ham United or wolves would also need to struggle. United just appointed Ten Hag so see how they react to that. You do get some funny results at this time of year though and it depends on who fight and who go on early holidays.
