Just been watching BBC's Fever Pitch documentary on the history of the Premier League and they're discussing the drop kick Cantina did on a Palace fan in the third season of the EPL and the outrage.

I've always felt the Palace fan (Matthew Simmonds) got what he had coming. At the time Cantona was vilified by the press, but I'm wondering how it would have played out in our taking the knee generation.

Obviously, Cantona shouldn't have, but entirely understandable.

I think the punishment would be similar now, he overstepped the line massively. However I thoroughly enjoyed watching the vile racist gobshite getting a size ten studded boot planted into his fizzogg.

What did Dier get recently?

I think the punishment would be far more lenient now. Especially as the clubs have more power.

I don’t think he got much more than a telling off. However cantona jumped into the opposition fans and physically assaulted him (though from what I can remember the fans around him said he was vile). It’ll be more likely now that the fan would be able to sue him for thousands in compensation, claiming for all kinds of psychological and physical injuries.

BTW if you think what Cantona did was bad, check out the 'Malice at the Palace' documentary on Netflix.

The Indiana Pacers basketball team at Detroit in '06 and it kicks off big time. Players fighting with fans in the stands like I've never seen in sport before.

Great stuff...

Not sure it’s quite as binary as that, mate.

If I verbally abuse someone and they twat me, I can’t really complain. (And yes, speaking from experience)!

Legally yes you can.

Fans think the safety of an advertising hoarding gives them immunity to say what they want without repercussions. Legally, Cantona was wrong but morally, players are well within their writes to lash out at some of the shit they receive.

Even though I was only about 6 or 7 when he left (I think), I remember him being the first player I really liked.

When Cantona is asked "Do you regret what happened?" He replies "Yeah, I wish I'd kicked him harder" lol

Don’t blame him hearing about the fan !

Sounded like a right old thug.

Obviously Cantona was wrong to react but certainly there were 2 at fault there .

Was Les Ferdinand right to say a black player would have got a jail term ?

That is an interesting comment, although I reckon if it was a black man with the name of cantona he'd have probably got off

Yes.

This world has gotten to a place where people now feel they can say and do whatever they want to others, and then scream “I’ll sue” if they don’t like the response.

There needs to be accountability. You cross the line, you just may deserve a punch in the mouth.

At least here in the states, maybe allowing an outlet early on would curb some of the bottled up anger that results in school/work place violence.

You should be allowed to hit people who say things you don't like? Seems a bit of a slippery slope, should someone be allowed to hit you if they don't like you? What about if the person doing the calling is bigger than you, are insults allowed then?

Where is the line drawn?

Was it ok for people to tell parents of school shooting victims, that they were participating in a lie?  What about the ones who did it outside the funerals?

Kids used to be told to stand up for themselves.  Some did, some didn’t.

Now they are told to suppress it and forget it.  It’s not forgotten.  It festers and boils, until it explodes.  Shootings, stabbings, abuse, suicide.  These people hit a point where they feel no other way out.

In your perfect world, there are no antagonists.

In the real world, they are out there using their perceived immunity to find new ways to bully others.
