Realistically, what would you do with this squad during the next 12 months?

I’d let Kasper go and bring in someone who comes for crosses/corners and is better with his feet

Defensively I’d sell Soyuncu and bring in a starting cb to play with Fofana when he is fit. Use Evans sparingly and give Nelson a loan in preparation for when Evans leaves/retires. New contract for Amartey and if we can sell Vestergaard I would be if not he’ll stay as 5th choice. Happy with fb options when JJ is back, however would let Bertrand go if anyone would take him

need another bruiser in cm as look weak when Ndidi isn’t there. Happy to have KDH as tielemans replacement and got Braybrooke coming through who is getting rave reviews so wouldn’t spend on another one if YT goes. I’d sell hamza and let Mendy go. Keep praet when back on loan.

id sign Lookman on a permanent to compete with Barnes on the left and then sign a left footer for the right hand side. Albrighton as 4th choice

Daka to take over as 1st choice next season with Vardy filing in. Happy to keep Kel as long as he’s happy with not being automatic 1st choice

Work on corners. Giving the attackers a running start whilst our defenders are all lined up is suicidal and then not having any players on the goal posts and schmeichel not coming off his line is also giving them a massive target to aim for, put it either side of him and it’s a goal.

Base the team around

Fofana

Ndidi

KD
Maddison

Daka

(Vardy to play an important role still)

Sell:

Tielemans (if he won’t sign new contract) - £35 million

Bertrand - free

Vestegaard - whatever we can get

Kasper - 2-5 mill

Ricardo (love him but cannot see him getting back to his best) - £10 million

Amartey - £5 million

Choudhury - £7-10 million

Mendy - £whatever we can

Perez - £8-12 million

Lookman - back to RBL

Tough to shift the that many players but if you can, gives you around 70 million in sales.

Reinvest and a team could look like this:

New GK - £10m

Justin

Fofana

Tarkowski - £20m

New left back - I like Adrien Truffert at Rennes - just 20 years old. - £15 m

Ndidi

KDH

RW - in desperate need here! Mbuemo from Brentford could be decent. £20m

Maddison

Barnes

Daka

That leaves on the bench:

Evans

Ward

Cags

Vardy

Iheanacho

Castagne

Thomas

Soumare

Transfers out: £70m

Transfer in: £65

The side looks better balanced and still has depth on the bench. Yes, we lose Tielemans (which is a tough one to accept) but we use the cash to fill areas of need.

Okay, my take since I started this.

GK - Sell Ward, offers little value. Purchase a GK that had potential to push Kasper now (if he’ll

extend his contract). I don’t think Iversen is ready (yet). He is however showing promise, so it would be good to see him loaned to a Premier League teamed for next season. Jakupovic expires at the end of the season but I’d try and retain him for experience. A 3rd choice rarely plays anyway.

RB - Ricardo / Castage are both good going forwards. We could do with a more solid defensive option to over something different. Not a top priority though and maybe JJ fulfils this. One of these goes over the next 12 months though, unless one can adapt to fulfil the RM / RW slot.

CB - Top priority, we need to sign an experienced (captain type) head. Joking aside I’d consider the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling etc at this stage. Evans is more injure prone than Jamie Redknapp. Soyuncu needs someone next to him like an Evans, Morgan, Huth to talk him through a game. Vestergaard, Amartey and Benkovic need shipping out. I’d be tempted to blood Nelson in, as he’s on the verge of getting game time at this point. Again, at this level, needs an experienced head next to him, of which we current don’t have. So if he isn’t going to play here, he’ll need to go out on loan. If we can’t sell Benkovic, as his contract doesn’t expire until 22/23, then loan him for 6 month to somewhere he’ll play. Hopefully someone will then buy him in January.  I think Morgan would have played 15 - 20 games for us this season. Amarteys contract expires summer 22, so he either leaves in January, or on a free in the summer.

LB - Thomas is okay, still learning and has shown real promise at times. He’s on the same trajectory of Chilwell. Bertrand has just struggled and just doesn’t look like he’s ever fully recovered from COVID. Without doubt, he showed great promise in pre season. Again, we’ve had Thomas playing alongside Soyuncu and they both lack that experience and potentially game management.

CM - N’Didi is okay. I’m fearful we’ll

lose him, so he’ll need potential need replacing. I’d keep Choudhury as we do need homegrown players to fulfil the status. If we have players coming through, we can sell

him too. Mendy and Praet are both surplus to requirements so can be sold. Tielemans will leave, so we will need to replace him. I’d personally be looking for more of a vocal leader, who I’d be looking to make my captain.

WM - Barnes is the only one I’d keep. Lookman doesn’t work hard enough however I’d be willing to re-asses his contribution at the end of the season. If he’s cheap enough, I’d be willing to purchase as a wide player. Perez can go, we have Iheanacho who can play as a 10 is Maddison is injured.

FW - Iheanacho and Daka are the future and I’d find a way of rotating them, or playing them together. Vardy has a contract until the end of 2023, after that I think he’ll most likely leave on a free transfer. We’ll need to find an option to replace him.

Tactically - ditch zonal marking and even stick men on the post. With our players we have, I’d still go 3-5-2 and have two holding players. Our problem are defensive but we do have contract situations in the squad. We face a major defensive rebuild over the next 12 months, which with how things currently stand, is required.

Jakupovic - Expires in the Summer - Retain and extend if possible.

Amartey - Expires in the Summer - Sell January if we can. Dependent on fitness and availability of potential new centres backs.

Schmeichel - Expires Summer 23, sell now if he won’t extend. He’s voiced playing elsewhere and in the Champions League. I wouldn’t be against selling him.

Bertrand - Expires Summer 23 - I’d sell at the next opportunity, or all him to leave for free if he can find a club to get more game time.

Evans - Expires Summer 23 - Brilliant in his time with us, however isn’t fit enough to play long term game time. If he’ll extend it would be on lesser terms and on a backup basis.

Mendy - Expires Summer 23 - I’d potentially retain him for the duration of his contract as I’d see him as a backup in the system I’d play. Unfortunately his height is a problem in what is a lightweight team.

Vardy - Expires Summer 23 - Allow him to leave on a free and go to the US.

Perez - Expires Summer 23 - Sell him in January and use the funds / wages to bolster the defence.

Ricardo - Expires Summer 23 - If he won’t extend, then we’ve got to sell him unfortunately. Although his value has plummeted.

Tielemans - Expires Summer 23 - I can see him leaving in January anyway, however if he doesn’t I pray he signs a new contract.

Benkovic - Expires Summer 23 - Ship out to anywhere that will play him and hope he plays well enough to sell in the summer / next January. We might recoup some of what we paid for him.

Soyuncu - Expires Summer 23 - If he won’t extend, then we need to sell January / Summer, whilst he has value.

Choudhury - Expires Summer 23 - Similar to Mendy, I’d utilise him in the system I’d adopt as a back

up player. Limited value on resale and his homegrown status aids us. If he won’t extend his contract, let him go on a free.

i would put the whole back line & midfielders to jumping exercises /leaping power/conditioning

corners are a priority

*. zonal defending in corners - who thought of this sh*t     no jumping prowess in all LCFC players

Sell Youri, Sell Maddison,  and let squard money earners not playing go out the door rebuild young

the top 6 have rebuilt the corrupt door and have closed it

The only way to challenge is to take chilwell like cash and use it to rebuild again after a summer of poor signings.

Get in a set piece coach ASAP

Sort the Sports Science/ Physiotherapy department out as a matter of urgency

Look to bring in some more aggressive/ influential players

Sell those who are wavering over signing a new contract- you're in or you're out

Sorry to compare to rugby but you look at what Steve Borthwick has done at Tigers. He basically simplified the game plan, put a huge emphasis on strength and conditioning (bringing in a guy called Aled Walters, one of the best in the world) and demanded total commitment or players could leave (this really helped separate the wheat from the chaff). Now they have everyone pulling in one direction and maximum buy-in. Above all, the guy brought clarity where there was confusion- I think this is where we're at a little bit.

Different sport but principles I believe are universal.

I cant believe how dismissive everyone is of this squad and this season.

We have had a nightmare with injuries but still have a fantastic team when all fit.

We just need to see this through as a squad, no rash decisions and no complete overhaul.

Much as Im far from happy with Brendan, we should keep hold him and give him the season to see how we go.

This season isnt over, we CAN(unlikely) get top 4 and if not top 6 given we still are a great team to watch and with Fofana and Justin coming back, we could give it a good go in the 2nd half of the season potentially to get at least Europa League. If not we have a great chance in the Europa Conference, which has a very weak look to it in terms of competition, and SHOULD be one of the favourites to go all the way in it!

The league cup was a disappointment, and im as annoyed at Brendan and our useless defence as anyone, but theres no need to all give up now. We still have a very good situation.

The biggest problem is with Tielemens. He is so crucial and we might struggle to convince him to hang on after this season, but if he dont leave in January and we have a good run then who knows.

Our defence will be fixed for next season with Fofana Justin coming back as well as Castange and Soyuncu. One more CB to add to the ranks next season with those i mentioned also, we would be perfectly fine if we are to have better luck with injuries!

Daka and Nacho both in their prime years will give options up top for years to come and Vards will always be an option still for his last 1 1/2 seasons. We have a great squad and attack wise we have still looked fantastic at times, its purely such bad luck to the defence unfortunatly.

Man City couple of years back lost (just) Laporte and dropped off huge. We also saw Liverpool do the same with (just) VVD.

We lost Fofana which is huge and exactly the same as them and look how they got effected! Add to Justin being out, Ricardo getting 2 serious injuries, Castange nearly losing his eye and being in and out, Evans in and out constantly, Soyuncu the same..its like if Man City had Diaz Laporte Stones Zinchenko Cancelo and Walker out for so long.

Its really disgusting that our best ever squad ever, probably never have had the chance to show consistently how good they are. I believe we could of potentially got top 4 for 3 seasons running had we not been so unlucky. Due to Tielemens probably leaving before our best team get back fit, itll always be a case of 'what if'.

Older fans will remember Collymore and Heskey vs Sunderland and then it falling apart not long after and wondering what if Stan didnt break his leg and Heskey didnt go to Liverpool and Lennon didnt go to Celtic, this is similar but worse.

What we need to do as Leicester fans is stick by this team and this manager. Yeah hes far from perfect and some of our signings have been embarrassingly bad, but we have the nucleus of a very good team so i completely disagree with any huge overhaul, we need to ride the storm together. This is not the time to give up and act like theres nothing to fight for. We have an outside chance of top 4/top 6 and at least should be getting top 8 at the least(the big 6 and West ham are the only teams we could argue we'd finish below), we also have a good chance for a european trophy which is not to be sniffed at and we also have an FA Cup to defend!

"What would you do with this squad", improve on the basics for starters. In some cases go back to square one which sounds daft when you're dealing with a group of professional footballers many of whom have already learnt their trade.

Obviously, we need to see some particularly those who have proved to be bad buys but not when your squad is so depleted by injuries.

It's a toughie, glad I'm not the manager.

Choose a back four and keeper you want by the end of Jan and start trying to keep clean sheets again. The forward line is doing well.

I would sign a CB as priority and hopefully by the end of the month JJ and Fofana are fit again.

I would also give Ward a start over Kasper by this time.

The summer for me is where there will be a big overhaul.

I certainly agree. A lot of knee-jerk reaction here for a team that has finished top 5 twice and won the FA Cup in the last two seasons. We didn’t sell anyone important in the summer, so we should be in a very good place.

People are on at Kasper but he kept us in the Cup Final and would probably be first choice at three-quarters of the teams in the PL. Ditto for Ward who got rave reviews in the Euros. Not sure how we realistically improve on full-backs of Pereira, Castagne, Justin and Thomas or CBS of Evans, Soyuncu and Fofana. They’d be first choice anywhere but maybe the top two or three. Ndidi and Tielemans is a dream midfield with Soumare and KDH a fantastic backup. We know RW is a problem but who else below top three can call on attackers like Barnes, Maddison, Vardy, Iheanacho and Daka.

I really struggle to see how/where we *realistically* improve player-wise except for RW. Difficult to even say we should be adding depth as we struggled to limit to the 25 player limit with what we have. In my view, it’s just mentally we are lacking and where an older head could possibly come in at CB or CM - albeit we’d have to sacrifice a very good player to do so.

We cannot just stack up players on 50-100k per week who don’t play.

Genuinely can’t believe this. You honestly don’t think we can get a stronger defence than this one?

Justin… we have no idea how he’ll be when he returns

Ricardo… never been the same since the awful injury and gets injured tying his boot laces

Thomas… one for the future

Bertrand… forget it

Caglar… God knows what’s happened to him?

Evans… past his best and picks up too many niggling injuries

Amartey… meh

Little Wes… quality but again, we’ll have to assess him on his return

Vestie… meh

Castagne… good enough

We gotta get a better quality of defence, especially at CB AND more strength in depth

The defence this season has been dog shit

We’ve had a settled squad for a long time but I think this summer might the first in a while where we turnover a great deal of players.

Might start a blog or something to write on the subject.

Honestly, we really don't need a massive reshuffle or overhaul.

We have the most goals per games and the best attack outside the top 3 - and our attack hasn't receeded from the past 2 seasons.

Vardy and Maddison have been amongst the best attacking players in the league this season and Iheanacho and Daka have both shone when given the opportunity as well.

Going forward we've largely been superb.

We just need to sort out the defence and defensive midfielder positions, I honestly think a couple of quality centre backs and a quality left back is all we need (not convinced Justin will be the same player until at least next season if at all once he returns) and that Ndidi is just having a bad season but will inevitably return to form at some point like Maddison has.

Main thing for me is we need another organiser to replace Evans. Evans has been the glue who has held our defence together the past 2-3 seasons but he's on the decline now and rarely seems to be fully fit. And that's the position we desperately need more than any.

Saw someone in the post match thread yesterday say we have a top 4 attack and a bottom 3 defence which about sums it up for me.

I agree, i cant see how we can really improve. This is the best squad we will ever have and it baffles me people think we can just pluck another world class signing like its nothing. We will never replace the likes of Tielemens, Fofana, Ndidi etc. These are world class players that will end up at the very top(providing Fofana comes back how he was but at 20 its a better chance when you break it at a younger age).

We need to keep them together as long as possible and add when required. We will need a CB as Evans is getting older just to challenge Little Wes and Cags. With these 2 and a new CB(Tarwoski) and Evans as cover, we would be fine barring any serious injuries.

The big problem is Youri, he will be impossible to replace and we might have to change complete style/manager etc without him. I think we should go for it this year and then re evalute in the summer.

Id give Brendan a chance next summer to hopefully get the squad fit again and have a bash next year, if we start bad next year then maybe THEN would it be the moment to maybe consider a new direction involving squad and manager.

For now, we are not 'past the curve' based on squad, just very unlucky with injuries. We'll scramble through and as I said before we have a hell of a lot to still play for this year. Hang in there and get hopefully by feb/march we might have near on our best squad all fit for the business end of the season. Our focus now is just sticking in there, grinding towards the last 16/quarters of the 2 cups we are in and then with our better players back, we'd have a chance to challenge in both.

Things can change in football quickly, a few good performances and everyone will be back on the confidence bandwagon. We are fantastic to watch going forward this year, I always think its harder to fix when its blunt and a lack of quality.

For example a team like Brighton are performing to the ceiling of their abilities and cant go much further. We show signs of top 4+ ability but have to many gaps so show absolute rubbish sides to due to weak squads. The potential to improve is there for us and were under achieving currently due to circumstances. This is 100% not the time to believe the grasser is greener and replace everyone, because the only way is down with the squad we have.

Schmeichel

Ricardo, Fofana, New CB, Justin

KDH, Ndidi, Maddison

New RW, Vardy, Barnes

Subs: Ward, Castagne, New CB,
Choudhury, Soumare, New CAM,

Albrighton, Iheanacho, Daka

Reserves: Jakupovic, Amartey, Evans, Thomas, Braybrooke, Alves

In:

New CB - First team replacement for Soyuncu.

New CB - Cover for Evans injuries, preferably someone who could also play as a defensive fullback. Tomiyasu in the summer would have been ideal.

New CAM - Competition for Maddison,  preferably someone who could also play on the wing.

New RW - Surely Tielemans will want to leave, so lets reinvest the money on a new first choice winger.

Backroom:

- Data analysis and recruitment, who do we have at the moment?

- Sports psychologist, did he ever get replaced?

- Medical and physio staff with a lot of experience

Coaching:

- GK

- Defensive

- Set pieces

- Fitness to work with the medical etc to ensure the players are fit

Playing:

- GK who can command his area

- CB (or 2 if Cags goes and Fofana isn't back to same level) who can defend and not get injured

- LB if JJ takes time to recover his form, just a back up to Thomas who has done well (bin Bertrand)

- RW, Lookman or actual RW

- Deep lying playmaker as YT will be going

Do we think Ndidi and Ricardo will stay?

why wouldnt they? can't see anyone going in for ricardo anyway

Realistically if it were me?....

First thing is a serious chat with BR as to how and if he can get us back on track because no matter how you look at it, something isn't quite right.

Secondly, complete overhaul of our coaches. Pack Kolo's things, drive him into the wilderness and leave him there. I don't know what it is he's supposed to be doing with this team but he's either not doing it or he's not good enough at doing it to be collecting a wage from us. Replace him with a competent defensive coach who brings ideas and solutions to the table. Along side him, bring in a set piece coach because at both sides of the pitch we have been dreadfull in that regard.

A sports phycologist to work out and address our mental weekness as a team and some sort of fitness coach to figure out why we can't keep players fit.

Player wise. Rodgers needs to work out how he wants to play because as it stands there doesn't seem to be a place in his system for Nacho and if that's the case, he should move the lad on and replace him with someone who fits into the image he has in his head. We need to figure out if Youri wants to be here. If not, this is the window to maximise his transfer fee. Sign a contract or go.

Some other players need a swift boot to the plums and be told unequivocally they step up or get out. Soyuncu, Barnes, Kasper and even Ndidi to an extent have been cruising through games, doing the bare minimum and not seemingly being held accountable for just how poor they've been.

I really can't see us signing anyone this window so we need to make sure the players we do have stand up and be counted and if they don't, clear out and tlstart again in the summer.

This will be unpopular.

Statistically. Ndidi is still putting tackles in and our attack is very good. 19 goals in 7 games. That's nearly 3 goals a game.

Defence is the issue.

Schmeichel has been here too long needs to be shipped off or dropped for Ward to have a go. Even if Ward is not as good we need to put a message out to the rest of the team.

Soyuncu needs to be sold while there are still clubs that will want to put a punt on him.

Evans is getting injured far too often and we need a new center back. To replace him.

We need a natural LB so if we dont have the funds stick Thomas in so he can learn at the very least. He has a good cross on him and he will get better.

Bertrand and Vestagaard should be sent to the U23s. And whoever signed them should be giving lectures on what he saw in them purely for comedic value.

Use pre season next year to try every formation under the sun to find a way to fit Vardy/Daka and Iheanacho in the same system while having the rest of the team still be able to function. If we do that we get 60 goals a season easy.

Using the sale money from Soyuncu, Tielemans and whoever else we can ship off. Try getting in Tarkowski and whoever is an upcoming cb in Europe. Someone like Botman or Vuskovic. There is no guarantee Fofana or Justin will come back the same player as we have seen with Barnes and Ricardo.

Also use left over funds to buy a goal keeper that can distribute the ball and provide competetion. The goalkeeper spot has gone far too stale.

Why would Kasper ever learn to claim the ball or to learn to distribute better when he knows he won't get dropped anyway?

Use KDH as a Tielemans replacement since we aren't going to get anyone nearly as good as Tielemans anyway so we may as well give him a go no harm in it anyway since qualifiying for Europe is out of the question. Plus we need to funds for our defence which is in dire need of a refresh.

Blood in some of the promising youngsters in the academy as well. We are going through transition now so why not. Forget Europe we are midtable for the foreseeable. Hell even give Ben Nelson a go.

And finally bring in a new physio team. They have been stupidly inept for the past 2 years now.

This all sounds too sensible to have a chance of being adopted

😒

You don't think we need a keeper and a defender or 2?

I think Kasper stays until it’s blatantly obvious he’s a hindrance. Now isn’t that time, but is maybe the start of it. I’d also worry that with Tielemans going, he’s a rare authoritative figure within the squad.

A centre back is easy to want, and I’d be happy with someone like a Botman or a player that suits our usual activity. But in theory Fofana, Soyuncu and Evans is fine for the next 12-18 months.

• Serious re-investment in defence

• Replacement for Kasper*

• Tie down/replace Tielemans

• Either sign Lookman and/or recruit winger

*That’s going off if Kasper looks for a move, after all he has stated at looking at a new challenge.
