My friend is working at it. Their Covid precautions for event staff are pretty crazy. Looking forward to tuning in though - you can’t beat a bit of Olympics

This is the good one, the normal Olympics is boring as shit.

So the games have started.

And already:

Norway win a gold in Cross country skiing

Netherlands get a gold in Speed skating

And a Brit falls over in the Short track speed skating event.

Business as usual then!

I can't shake a Berlin 1936 type of feeling.

A rising, malign major power, chafing under the existing international order, puts on one last show of cooperation and friendship?

Nah.

In terms of direct action, the Chinese leadership don't seem interested in oppressing any people but their own. Of course, that's an issue by itself, though.

Besides, they and anyone else knows how a dustup between the big powers in this day and age ends - with everyone losing.

It is still a bit distasteful to see a country with such a poor human rights record basically throw it in everyone's faces, though.

The downhill slope looks amazing & they got some minerals screaming down there at 136km, as i type a german guy creams in.

The facilities/slopes/courses in general looking really good, was impressed with the snowboarding course yesterday.

I'm watching bits here and there but I'm really just marking time until the Snowboard Cross starts on Wednesday. By far the best event at the WO.

That and the downhill race.  The best of the old and the new for me.

There'll be a bit of a Leicester City vibe in China today, with When You're Smiling booming out in the Beijing Ice Skating arena.

Japan's Yuma Kagiyama, has chosen it as the music for his short program.  See it at about 5am UK time. This was how he did it in the Japanese championships recently:

Update:

Wow - he skated it perfectly and he's in silver medal position going into the free program

Downhill is good and I admire their bravery but Snowboard Cross can be absolute carnage with them racing against each other rather than the clock. And you can usually rely on someone to bin it when way out infront which is always good for a chuckle.

Athletes have been hitting out at Olympic organisers, with complaints about freezing conditions and quarantine rules pouring in.

So they are complaining about the cold weather at the Winter Olympics?

Another +1 for this. The Snowboard Cross is just pure carnage. Very entertaining to watch

But also some really good events - enjoying watching the Curling and the skiing events. Love the Winter Olympics

For me, the winter Olympics always seem better when its natural conditions rather than all man made. Not sure why.

Yes, it doesn't feel very "wintry" at all does it? It does seem much better when it's absolutely shallacking it down with snow like in Vancouver for example. But I guess the way we are going the number of cities able to host a genuine "winter" olympics is getting smaller all the time! Probably won't be long before they award it to Qatar!
