James Garner transfer situation develops as Erik ten Hag plans Man Utd midfield rebuild

Leicester City are keen to land Manchester United midfielder James Garner after his impressive loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

Garner’s form in helping Forest reach Sunday's Championship play-off final has prompted interest from several Premier League sides, including Leeds and Southampton. But Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers has also been keeping tabs on the 21-year-old’s progress and was impressed with the 21-year-old’s performance when he helped the reds knock their East Midlands rivals out of the FA Cup.

Garner’s long-term future at Old Trafford is up in the air as new boss Erik ten Hag works out who he wants to keep and who will stay - and the Dutchman plans to assess the player during pre-season before making a concrete decision. But Leicester are willing to wait as Rodgers scours the game for new blood to add to his midfield and, if available, Garner is set to feature high on his list of targets.

United face a serious rebuild this summer with plenty of movement expected all across the squad - and particularly in midfield. Nemanja Matic has already confirmed he is leaving Old Trafford this summer, while Paul Pogba is also expected to depart on a free transfer, with the World Cup winner linked with Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

Jesse Lingard will also be leaving on a free transfer while Juan Mata could be on his way out as well, leaving Ten Hag light on options in what was an already-underwhelming midfield unit.

Loaning Garner out to a Premier League club for regular game time could be an attractive option for United given his impressive performances at Forest, though Ten Hag's transfer business is likely to dictate Garner's chances of first-team football at Old Trafford.

United's Europa League qualification means Ten Hag will have more games in which to rotate the likes of Garner and fellow young midfielder Hannibal Mejbri. Donny van de Beek - who worked with Ten Hag at Ajax - is likely to return from loan at Everton to be given a chance to impress his former coach, while United will be in the market for at least one more central midfielder, with the likes of Barcelona playmaker Frenkie De Jong and Wolves star Ruben Neves being on United's radar.

....he looks good, seems to tidy things up and mops up the middle of the park!!!

A good range of passing awareness and can shoot from distance. He looks like he links the team together, he seems a good acquisition.

Was meant to be Saints big target this summer so maybe we are getting some Glover influence already.

I agree with this. For me he also looks like the sort of central midfielder we need to tie the middle of the park together. A great age too. If we can pull this of it will be quite a feat given that he clearly is a good young prospect and on loan from United. It’s difficult to see from afar but he seems like the right sort of character too. Tenacious, athletic unassuming and hard working. Another CM starlet I like is tommy Doyle the Man City loanee at Cardiff along with fellow Man City youngster mcatee.  The challenge will be actually getting them in and what message it may say to our own promising youngsters like brunt and Braybrooke .  I think if handled correctly it could be positive and show that we are a club that can take youngsters to the next level.

Horrible feeling that this is more realistic signing than all the names banded about so far, and that may not even be the case if Forest get promoted today, Man U want him to play as a guaranteed starter and we only want him on loan.

I would sooner give the likes of Braybrooke and Alves a chance then sign this chap.

The difference between 18 and 21 is way bigger than 21 and 24  …… if rodgers thinks they’re up to it then they’ll get their chance.  With five subs next season that is much easier.

He was bloody good in the great escape.  Didn't realise he could play soccer.  Wow.

Didn't we used to have a player called Michael Cain too?

If we were looking at Forest then Brennan Johnson would be a better option on RW - assuming we have first been priced out of getting likes of Madueke.

Johnson really won’t be much cheaper.

You maybe correct. Point was more there are better targets than Garner.

My preference would be we look at likes of Madueke for RW and Kökcü to replace Youri but suspect we won’t have the budget and may need to look at cheaper options / frees and loan to buy options.
