1 goal, 2 assists for Kvaratskhelia today. What a player.

Lad is a joy to watch, seems to have appeared out of nowhere.

@Finneganand other Welsh posters, what do you think of this possibility?

It's an interesting one really. Obviously it's our own name for the country but then when communicating in English UEFA refers to Spain as Spain, Germany as Germany, Poland as Poland, etc and plenty of other countries by their English name. If you look at a list of UEFA member nations you'll find only Turkiye (that recently made a point of changing the spelling of their name internationally outside of sport) uses its native language name to take precedent over English in English communications.

But then we're probably the only country on the list whose name was imposed on us by our overlords and the etymology of which is slightly controversial.

The root word behind "Wales" and "Welsh" is an old Germanic word for those who, to them, were Westerners. It's meaning became narrower over time as history evolved. Its been translated and debated many times by historians and linguists and its been suggested it meant, at best, "foreigner" to the Anglo Saxons and at worst "slave" depending on the scholar.

As you can imagine this makes it slightly contentious.

Truthfully, the vast majority of people in Wales will still refer to themselves as Welsh and the country as Wales and it isn't currently at a point where it particularly offends anyone. But the Welsh language is growing and so is a resurgence of nationalist/separatist sentiment again (as it tends to when a shit Tory government is in Westminster) amongst younger people in Wales.

The national football team have become more of a symbol over the last decade, despite the move to a smaller stadium and attendances being half of what they were in the Hughes era, there's probably a larger core fanbase now and the identity of it has shifted somewhat. Used to be if you wanted to hear Welsh language songs or a bit more Welsh culture you'd find it at the rugby but increasingly the football team has been seen as a national symbol and the fans have started to embrace more nationalist anthems like Yma o Hyd which used to have way more traction at the rugby (booming out at the old Stradey Park for example.)

I'd say overall its smart branding designed to tap in to a current growth in patriotic sentiment amongst young people in Wales to get people interested in the national team really more than actually expecting the international image of the team to change.

MLS final has been really good.  LA fans with nice Tifo and good atmosphere.  Could do without the bottles being thrown seems to happen too often in the MLS these days.

Love the Seville derby.

Always so much fire and aggression.

Montiel just got sent off for a knee-high studs up tackle on one of the Betis players.

And now Fekir is off for Real Betis lol.

Both decisions the ref went to the monitor and overturned his own initial decision.

Red card for each team.

Am I the only one thinking the throw-in before the assist for Bale was a foul throw??

Mourinho may be done at Roma. 7th in the league, lost the derby against Lazio last week, just been sent off against Torino, and they're about to lose that game after missing a stoppage time penalty.

They look well off the pace compared to top 4 teams.

Pretty good going to be so close to the top 4 if they're not playing well though
