PL Managers ranked by blame-shifting

An Athletic writer decided to rank last season’s PL managers by their excuse-making in post-match interviews.  He went back and watched all 492, and tallied up how often the gaffers “blamed external factors”.  Refereeing, luck, scheduling, individual players, injuries, fatigue, the pitch, etc.  I can't share the text, but here is the table.

 

 

 

 

I would have taken Klopp to lap the field.  But he’s midtable.  When you’re winning the matches, you’re not playing the blame game right after.  Klopp spreads his moaning around during the week and doesn’t let up in the off-season.  He moans to manipulate the refs and the League rule-makers.  The emotional German?  Partly an act.

 

But despite (collectively) winning most of their games, most of the Rich Six gaffers ranked high.  Conte was the notable exception.  He is too busy driving his no-excuses culture through the club to undermine that message in meaningless media exercises.

 

OTOH, Tuchel and Arteta at #1 and #2 … pathetic.  If they lose or draw, they always find something to blame.  Sometimes even if they win.  Not what a DoF should be looking for IMO.  “Excuses are good” is not a message you want anywhere near your dressing room.

 

Rodgers came 20th.  Relegation form! the more obsessive BR-outers might say.  And maybe he’s too polished with the media, too nice with the refs.  Not as much pressure on him?  Or simply picks his spots to deliver “his” message vice the club’s message, but with a poor sense of timing.

 

Looking only at post-match pressers is too limited an approach, but it still tells you something, since that is when emotions are highest.  All managers do it (well, except Ted Lasso).  BR the blame-shifter is something of an outdated narrative.  As PL managers go, he’s very far from the worst.

I always like this sort of novelty left-field article. Surprised to see Frank that low and Howe that high, he doesn't strike me as much of a blamer.

The Athletic is more or less a tabloid and it’s fairly obvious that they are quite ‘friendly’ with certain managers, including our Brendan, whom we know is committed to staying on the media’s good side. So not that surprising he doesn’t get in the top 4 (lol) despite what we know about his gaslighting.

 

Some of their articles about football fans aka members of the public have been disgraceful, almost Daily Mail-esque.

It's pretty much the antithesis of the tabloid rags in every way.

 

Paid for by subscribers who find original, though-out content worth it.  And a relief from clickbait trash.

While I know some people slate Jesse Marsch, hearing him talk is refreshing and he doesn't really do "excuses". He generally seems to give a frank assessment of the situation and takes the blame. I'd rather that than Arteta.

Rodgers barely blames the referees, schedules, external influences to be fair. Yes, he'll dig out the players now and then, the fans once in a while but in terms of managers ranting and raving he's nowhere near the top.

Have to say he didn’t mention injuries much if at all last season. He didn’t moan about fixtures either when in Europe. He genuinely just gets on with it
