This is why I don't have a problem with players retiring from/ not bothering with international football. Southgate failing to back his claims about picking on form and several selected whatever is happening.

If you were Chris Smalling, you'd be livid. The bloke has been in top form for a team near the top of a major European league but Southgoon would rather have chuffing Coady in there.

Unfortunately the one time Southgate saw him live Roma lost 4-0!!

Southgate is such a ****.

Same old faces regardless of whether they are considered good enough for their clubs first eleven.

But he does pluck the odd performing player from an unfashionable club, this time it's Toney.

I'll be surprised if he gets much gametime on the pitch though. Harry Kane playing 80 mins plus of course

Maybe one game away to Italy so the guy will hardly get a kick and never be seen again.

I remember DCL didn't even on the bench as Kane's back up in the Euros.

why so many right backs ?

I just think he doesn't know which one to pick...

And TAA gets in as the Liverpool fans kicked up such a fuss when he wasn't in the squad.

Ward-Prowse is really only included due to his dead-ball abilities.

Just don't understand the hype of Mount; just very average-to-good, at best.

With all the talent England have, I'm very relieved to see that Southgate is trying his best to screw it up. Pick a bunch of out of form players because they're his favorite. Set them up to play very conservative boring football. Tale as old as time 😂

5 midfielders lol. What on Earth do the likes of Ben White, Jack Harrison and Maddison have to do to get picked. Must be so disheartening when you know you wont be picked ahead of players woefully out of form.

For all the money in the world, I can't think why anyone would join Man City.

The answer is in your own post.

guy should have been sacked after the euros. one of the worst managers ever considering the talent at his disposal.

I think he still gets 2024 unless we go out in the group stages.

Problem now is Potter is set in a big job as long as he can keep hold of it and Howe has got his project too. It would take both of those getting sacked in January to make the FA move quickly.

They need another face that fits and wont cause any dramas (why southgate has had the job so long) and those two are the options.

I've just remembered that in England's last game we lost 4-0 at home to Hungary lol

We sack Rodgers, Southgate get sacked after a disastrous world cup and Rodgers is next England manager. Can see that happening, and to be fair might be decent fit because he's not allowed to sign anyone.

Imagine the team once he’s put four squads under the bus

I can only imagine that Mount is very good at following Southgates instructions and satisfies what he wants :dunno:. Looking back at those duff games at the end of the season and the final vs Italy it amounts to jogging around pointing, which to be fair to the lad he's absolutely excellent at.

Watching Ivan Toney interview on his call up you just can't help but feel sorry for the guy, he just can't see it.

Firstly well done Ivan you fully deserve it but sadly as long as Kane is fit & able (or even if not) you will not get on infront of him & as Southgate plays the 3 upfront you won't get to play at all sadly as (other than Abrahams) all the others play left/right of Kane & Southgate is not moving away from his set up.

Says now he's in the squad he's going to take it with both hands, Ooh its the hope that gets ya Ivan :(

UNLUCKY Laura Woods ‘baffled’ by Leicester star James Maddison’s England absence and explains why he is different to other footballers

Phil Spencer
21st September 2022, 4:22 pm Updated: 21st September 2022, 4:22 pm

Laura Woods believes that it’s ‘a crying shame’ that James Maddison isn’t currently considered as an option for England’s World Cup squad.

The Leicester City star has been a standout performer in recent seasons, scoring 18 goals and grabbing 12 assists last term.

Maddison has been the one positive for Leicester in a season that sees them bottom of the league

The midfielder perhaps hasn’t got the international attention that his form deserves

That has continued this term with the 25-year-old already bagging three goals and an assist in seven appearances.

Despite his impressive displays for his club, Maddison has won just one senior cap for England so far in his career, with many being of the belief that his form and calibre means that he deserves more.

Among those is talkSPORT host Woods, who says that Maddison has shown a real maturity that could see him thrive as part of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man World Cup squad.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, Woods said: “The whole ‘is it his attitude’ thing really baffles me, or what he does off the pitch, that baffles me a lot.

“We were talking about James Maddison yesterday and the way that he speaks to the media and I’m saying that I think he’s great, but loads of people are saying ‘he’s 25, he’s not beyond his years he should be speaking to the media’ and I’m like, hang on guys, I literally do this for a living.

“I speak to these footballers for a living. I speak to these players who are exactly the same age as him and he’s different in the way that he addresses the media.

“He’s different to a lot of other footballers.

“I think he’s got a smart head on his shoulders and I’d just love to see him in an England shirt.

“I just can’t understand, 12 defenders. You’re taking 12 defenders, why don’t you just take James Maddison then?

“If you’re picking on current form which Gareth Southgate has said that he’d do in the past and you’re looking at who the standout players for their teams are at the moment, in a Leicester side who are struggling, James Maddison is an absolute bright light.

“I think it’s a crying shame that he’s not in an England shirt at the moment.”

Went to a casino after saying he wasn't well enough to travel with squad.

He was sent home by them due to 'illness'. He was then seen by our medical team who gave him the all clear (yes, I know) and he went out.

No whether he was actually sent home due to illness is another matter, but on the face of it - not sure what he's done wrong.

If Southgate is still holding this grudge against madders he's an absolute fruitcake! That incident was so long ago and the matter closed. Heck we've seen worse from Foden & Grealish yet those golden boys keep getting picked. Madders probably is the smartest of the bunch too IMO.

I don't get it whether SG uses him or not madders should be in that squad. Drop on of the flipping defenders we don't need that many unless the plan is to park the bus for the whole tournament. Anyway hope madders keeps doing his thing it will only mount more pressure on SG as the tournament nears.

Just unlucky I guess to get caught.
