Because a referee who has worked his arse off to get to the top of the game not just in his country, but worldwide, is not going to ruin his entire career and reputation to throw a game he’s worked so hard to get.

And 2 of  the other refs were English and Brazilian .

Maybe not strictly a World Cup post but saw this earlier and shows just how insane Messi is.

There's no one from Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium either. It's not that big a thing.

If anything it tells us what we already know that the Premier League is a level of competitiveness that a lot of leagues can’t get near. 3 players of that 10 have had a sustained period in the division

Unfortunately for Neymar and Suarez they came into an era of Messi and Ronaldo. Otherwise they'd have won several Balon dors that their talent and output deserves.

Yeah I think Suarez especially gets overlooked. Absolutely phenomenal player.

England properly blew it with a chance to play Morocco to advance to a world cup final.

Southgate has got to go, why has he not resigned yet? like Martinez do the right thing and leave.

Martinez is out of contract not renewed, so not exactly quitting.  Southgate has 18 months at least left on his contract.  He will be sounding out potential jobs before he jumps.

If he is waiting on other jobs then he stays with England. I don't think the phone will be ringing.

Based on enjoyment rather than being in Qatar or the quality, Summer world cups are far more enjoyable than winter ones

Media are ruining the fun a bit by making it Messi v Mbappe. Its been awful for this in the past few years, lile Salah v Mane in the AFCON. There are 20 other players plus those on the bed that can influence. Its not just the likes of the Sun or Joe or GiveMeSport, its the BBC too ffs.

Was it always like this but just worse now?

How much of that was his own doing?

Didnt his nonsense get him a years suspension once?

Yeah true. Genuinely forgot about the racism. Properly unpleasant.

Gianni Infantino has started his press conference by praising the success of the tournament: "The unanimous praise of Fifa Council for this World Cup and for the unique cohesive power this World Cup has shown.

"Thanks to everyone involved, Qatar, all the volunteers to make this is the best World Cup ever."

... I'm sorry, what?

No, it wasn't. It's a part of the whole schleb culture. It's an insult to the other players in the team by the media.

You'd be hard pressed to say when this started but the whole WAG stuff is symptomatic of this separation of certain individuals.

I don't think Gazza would have found himself féted like this - but his reputation was continually tainted by the drinking and general looniness. Best was the first British player to be grabbed by the press as a celebrity but I suspect Busby and certain of the Munich survivors still in the team would have thought it in bad taste. Again, it was the drinking and womanising. We tend not to hear too much about the players' private lives, but they're probably much more weird than those of yesteryear. Huge wages and fawning fans and Media make for all kinds of bizarre behaviour.

Well, Gary, Gary, Gary has confirmed my opinion - that the Brazilian side of 1970 continue to be the greatest side to have graced the World Cup. The Dutch side of '74, the French équipe of '82 and the Spanish side of 2010 were all outstanding champions.

It's a very different competition now to 1970, but five or six of those players, Pelé, Gérson, Tostão, Rivellino and Jairzinho were the greatest collection of attacking players ever assembled in one team. One must also mention Carlos Alberto and Clodoaldo.

I still get a tingle down my neck when I watch the Carlos Alberto fourth goal of the final. Pelé rolls the ball into his path and he hits it as he's off the ground with the outside of his boot. It never rises more than nine, ten inches as it finds goal. A thing of the utmost beauty.

Considering  all the hullah ballu prior to the WC and the last min booze ban,  think the tournament  was up there with the best.

No stories of booze up English lads scrapping with the Qataris , maybe no alcohol at football and mixed fans in stadiums  is the future!!!
