There are so many improvements needed, just cutting out getting loads of stuff wrong would be a good start. The crux of it is if correct decisions on field by 1 person are being overturned by 7 people who don't seem to overly know what they're doing... Then what's a benefit there? You go over to the monitor as a guide? I believe in hundreds of instances an official has stuck with their original decision once (prem and international that I am aware of, sure its more but not that I've seen) so much needs doing away with. I love the nfl, that's a very, very stop start game and the var just works 99% of the time, looks a dubious call on the pitch but is there anything irrefutable to overturn the decision? Yes, then it's overturned, no? Then it's not. My other main gripe with it is it was meant to get rid of the perceived big team bias and if anything its made me think that was never really that much of a thing to it's definitely a thing and it's bad. I wasn't someone who was against it when it came in but after 5 years of it slowly deteriorating football as something I enjoy watching I'd be equally as happy for it to be done away with or done properly but what evidence is there that it will actually be done properly in the near future? Like I say some of the clearly incorrect uses of the technology at this tournament just has me thinking it's regressing in terms of its use and implementation. I just think it's a disaster.

IMO these are totally valid and fair comments.

Personally, I think the "done properly" is possible and should be worked towards ASAP rather than "done away with".

Doesn't help when they keep tweaking the rules/laws under pressure from a single incident that the media go overboard with and then moan about the effect of the tweak.

While we've got mostly ex-players applauding cheating and arguing amongst themselves about decisions will we ever get consensus?

People will never stop arguing with each other about decisions made. The debate is part of what makes football more interesting than other sports in my opinion. I don't want to see football become a sterile sport like american handegg.

We’ll of course but I think the debate is too focused on the ref rather than the actual football. I watched the post Japan game and all they did was keep talking endlessly about whether the ball was in or out on repeat. No discussion about the actual football. The decision had been made it wasn’t going to change so completely pointless debate. All the media reporting and headlines were the same was the ball in play?

Personally I don't really have an issue with VAR. Yes, it disrupts the flow of the game and I fully accept that it's taken some of the spontaneity away from supporters, however I don't buy into the controversy regarding decisions.

I much prefer the transparency that it brings to the table in terms of allowing the officials to get the opportunity to review a decision they made in a split second and correct if necessary. The amount of times pre-VAR both Leicester and England had very obvious decisions go against them in important moments was very frustrating indeed and watching them back post match was torture.

I'm not saying that VAR is perfect nor is it error free but I think when there is a situation where a degree of uncertainty arises it is often in a situation which is difficult to call or very open to the individual interpretation of the rules.

There's definitely room for improvement and I agree with those who have suggested that the officials need to be mic'd up so that we can hear what the officials are discussing as it certainly seems to work well in other sports.

I respect that opinion, but I like the subjectivity and the debates around the ref having a howler lol but people used that as an excuse not to have any technology whatsoever. Maybe I'm wrong. I think VAR has been good at punishing things like diving for example.

I found the reaction to the Japan goal very odd, considering that (from what I've seen) there was no such uproar in Germany.

World Cup 2022: How to take a penalty in a shootout - A lot of stats.

Extract

Be German (or Argentine)
It is a cliche, but Germany are the best country at taking penalties at World Cups, winning all four shootouts - against France (1982), Mexico (1986), England (1990) and Argentina (2006).

They have scored 17 of their 18 kicks - with Uli Stielike the only one to miss in the first World Cup penalty shootout between West Germany and France.

Of course, they've already gone out. So if you can't be German, be Argentine. They have also scored a joint-record 17 penalties - but that is out of 22. They have won four out of five, only losing to Germany.

Three teams actually have a 100% success rate of scoring in penalty shootouts: Belgium, South Korea and Paraguay (all 5/5).

Don't be English (or Swiss)

England have missed more penalties in World Cup shootouts than anybody else - eight (out of 19).

Gareth Southgate's side's win against Colombia in 2018 was their first success.

Their three spot-kick defeats remains a joint high with Spain and Italy (all W1 L3).

But the worst team to take part in a World Cup penalty shootout is Switzerland, who missed all three kicks against Ukraine in 2006. They are the only team to take part in a shootout and fail to score any penalties.

Be right-footed

Anyone know where to get good illegitimate football shirts? Love that Japan home jersey but it’s sold out everywhere and £70 seems very steep for a shirt I’ll just be playing 6 a side in

It’s refreshing not to see bald, burned, beer bellied tattooed twats ripping up the local town square while singing songs about the war.

That's because they're busy doing it at home.

West Bridgford was a war zone after the USA match.

Just have a look on depop/vinted. Loads of people selling dodgy shirts on there these days and the wait for delivery is probably less than getting them elsewhere

Far as I'm concerned that is just yet another indication of how awful this is. He's a yard away, his hand is tucked in and his head is turned. The referee didn't deem it enough for a pen. You'd be furious if that was given against you. Is it a penalty? For me no but if the ref gives it fair enough, for var to say yes that is a pen, and as said before, the second the ref is called over, you could show them a plain black screen and convince them it was white. Joke.

I actually saw a car with flags on this morning, reminded me we were playing tonight.

I just can’t get into it, I have the games on but don’t really pay much attention. I honestly don’t think we’re doing that bad and as dull as we are I think with a bit of luck we’ve got a decent chance.

I know there’s been some upsets but I just expected better quality from Belgium and Germany in particular.

Massive long shot, I’m in New York for the quarter final (if we get through) does anyone recommend any sports bars or even bars with any potential Leicester fans?

The Football Factory. Downstairs at Legends Bar, W33rd. Run by Leicester fans.

Dog and Bone Tavern is decent

Turing into a brilliant World Cup, all it needs now is a good last 16 upset and a penalty shootout.

I think Japan and Brazil should win tonight’s games, and Morocco can upset Spain, whilst Portugal Switzerland can go to penalties (Ronaldo and Fernandes to both miss for a perfect game)

Good point about the lack of flags.Seems that’s a Summer thing.

The usual hype does seem to be toned down a bit this time round.
