That’s pretty awesome.

Re giving up your time, did I put some money in your collection pot once outside the KP?

Or am I getting mixed up?

Yes I did the collection at the KP for the Birches run a couple of times

I am heavily disenamoured with the big charities. Yes, ok, they do good work; but whatever money I am able to give is DWARFED by the ridiculous salaries some of the CEOs are paid.

I also won't give money direct to the homeless, because I know that a lot of them are addicted to something or other.

In terms of mental health charities CALM are really good and growing. But remember the best charities for mental health are actually the food banks and ones that can offer people short term security.

Local hospices are always a big one for me. I've had a few family members live their last days in one and the level of care is always phenomenal.

Rspca, animals are completly innocent of the fate that we bestow on them. Defineatly not any of the charity sweet " we guarantee that 10p goes to the nominated charity" box causes. 20p of sweets for a quid and 10p to the charity.. where's the rest going?

That’s amazing - is it a work thing, or individual fundraising?

individual, the wifes family have been doing it since her brother died of leukemia. it used to be a darts night, but we turned into a live stream relay that runs 24hours for week a few years ago

That’s a ridiculous amount to raise. Great cause as well.

Hats off to all connected to it - happy to donate if you send details next time it’s happening.

Sponsored 5 different children over the past 20 odd years through Plan International.

Will usually buy a Big Issue for £5 and always stick a couple of quid in a Marie Curie collection tin if I see one.

Our work Christmas raffle ticket purchases go to the Emmaus, which is a local charity to support people coming out of homelessness.

And we have an employee engagement survey where for every person that completes it, £1 is given to the Trussell Trust.

So guess I indirectly support those charities too.

I take it you have been there.  Its a lovely place.

I actually haven't, I've been wanting to visit the Birmingham one, but not actually got around to it yet. Last time I popped on the site and viewed their live cams I saw a couple of horny donkeys going at it lol

MIND

Heart of Kent Hospice

MacMillan

I will probably start donating to two concerned with childhood epilepsy and (at the other end of the scale) Alzheimers.

You've probably guessed that I am one of those fairly selfish (?) donators who tends to see real value only in the causes that have directly affected loved ones.

Loros, I’ve ran a few marathons and half marathons to support them too. RLNI because my dad regularly supported them and now he has gone I’ve picked up the tab in his memory.

Usually try to buy a couple of bits in the supermarket to put into the food bank collection. Really shouldn’t be needed in this day and age in this country but I’m fortunate enough to be in a position to help a little so I try to.

Outside of that Alzheimer’s Research is the one closest to home in terms of a cause but I’ve also more recently been looking at which charities give the greatest percentage of their donations direct to the cause and try to be guided by that.

An idea I had a year or so ago was to give myself a monthly amount that each month could go to any charitable cause of my choosing rather than the same one every time. It serves the purpose of being able to contribute when asked for sponsorship or when there’s something like the Union FS food bank initiative going whilst also not feeling like a dick when turning down the appeals to set up a regular direct debit for one particular charity.
