Gillingham (A) pre-match thread - FA Cup 3rd round - Sat 7th Jan 12:30pm kickoff

Is it just me or can I hear the commentary already at half 2 on Saturday? "The team bottom of league two, 79 places in the league behind Leicester are in the 4th round."

It has the perfect fa cup 3rd round story. Crap prem team in disarray with a load of kids playing succumb to a boggy rainy pitch and a live TV humiliation?

Lose this or don't win ( or scrape a 1-0 or something and it's obvious how in the crap we are) lose to Newcastle and Forest and we could easily see the back of Rodgers.

We are a magnet for injuries in cup competitions especially, I really hope that key players can be rested. Just so annoying our academy is also riddled with injuries to our best players as well.

I'd play Top in the hole

Is that a board game? Or is it like toad in the hole?

This is why seeing all these weakened teams makes me nervous.

Lose this and confidence will be through the floor. I’d only change the keeper and maybe give Albrighton a start.

Get the game won and then bring players off.

Tough one, if we play a strong side we'll have at least one ACL injury and a couple hamstring problems knowing our luck. Hope a few young players get to play.

Iversen

Wormleighton (is he fit)

Amartey

Ndidi

Thomas

Albrighton

Mendy

Tielemans

Barnes

Perez

Iheanacho

Could play Vestergaard if we have to and Ndidi in midfield instead of Tielemans but didn't want an Ndidi/Mendy partnership .

Don't really want to risk Barnes, no matter how shit he has been recently, but he needs a goal and a good game against lower league opposition.

the only academy players we’re seeing in this are Brunt and Mcateer. Would love to see a young attacker involved

Our best attackers are all injured sadly. Maswanhise doesn't seem to have kicked on enough in Brendan's eyes it would seem.

Gillingham are in free fall right now.  They narrowly missed the chance to escape the drop from League 1 last season and haven't been able to put together a string of results this time.  Their supporters must feel desperate right now and an FA Cup win would give them some solace but their focus has to be survival in League 2 this year so they may not even risk their best players.

If we can't beat a team with so many problems then we'll deserve to go out.

I think Maswanhise might have a chance, he is back in first team training again

That would be nice, he was in blistering form at the start of the academy season.

Get Logan Briggs in an'all.

Couldn't agree more. But it is a very fine line for Brendan and the club. With all the injuries we have, any more would be a disaster. But then play a team of kids and lose and big questions would be asked. I reckon the best way is as you say go 2 up or 3 and then bring everyone like Youri and Barnes etc off. But then again it may not be that easy and we could end up with a strong team out that either fails or struggles to win. Sometimes I hate football.

Play Rodgers' nan, Stevie Wonder and Rizzo the rat for all I care. Just don't risk anyone from the first team in this match

But what are the repercussions if we lose to the team bottom of league 2? We won't have any excuses.

Popov has been out for a few months with a serious injury, Braybrooke appears injured too.

As a Gills fan, I can openly say that this is worst ever team to wear a Gills shirt.

We are expecting a spanking, we just need the cash to hopefully, get players to save us.

We can leave you quite a few before the bus goes back north.

We could even throw in a manager too if that helps sweeten the deal?

Castange, Thomas, Ndidi, Faes all need a rest for the Newcastle and Forest games absolutely.

Vardy maybe as well if Daka is still injured but we’ll have Nacho there anyway.

Id even consider resting Perez too if Maddison’s still out as long as we play him in a more central role.

Who else could play LB including youth players?

Didn't Brunt play a half at LB in a cup game .....?

Struggling to get a side together for this one…

Mendy in for Braybrooke then, and Pennant and Wormleighton? (If he’s fit again) onto the bench

Brendan Rodgers Pre-Match Press Conference vs Gillingham

KDH and Soumare

“Both him and Bouba are highly unlikely to be available. We’re waiting for clarification on their timescales.”

Daka

“He trained with the medical team and then was out with the group today. Hopefully, all being well, we’ll see how he’s recovered after the situation. It’s not as bad it seemed.”

Praet

“He’s coming along very well and he did a clearing session with the rehab team. He’s doing very well. We’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

Maddison

“It’s slow at the moment with James. It’s day by day. It wouldn’t be this week, but we’ll see how it is for next week.”

Fresh injuries

“No fresh injuries. It’s documented we have nine, but five of those are stuff you can’t do anything about. The Achilles ones, and Ryan Bertrand with his knee.”

Transfers

“We’re working very hard behind the scenes to get the type of players we want to get in. I know there’s a lot of work going on. Every manager will tell you he wants them right at the very beginning of the window. It’s normally complex and a lot of work is needed behind the scenes.”

Cups

“We want to go as far as we can. We want to win every cup competition. We arrive into the game against a team that hasn’t done as well as they would like in the league but has made it very difficult for teams in the cup competitions. We have to be very professional.”

Transfers

“The supporters have one outfield signing to talk about in the last couple of windows. They can see the team needs reinforcements. If we can do that, it will be great news for them.”

Finances

“It’s getting more difficult. The financial resources, not just in the top six, makes it really difficult. Clubs have multiple injections of finances. We have one owner and one family. Each year it gets tougher. It doesn’t soften our ambition to be super competitive.”
