CosbehFox Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 Difference between Gillingham and Newport is that the latter were in decent form and really well drilled. Gillingham are a shambles at the moment - noticed Colchester beat them recently and watched them two weeks ago play appallingly. We went past MK Dons in a breeze whom were in a similar position
bovril Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 I probably enjoy cup games more when we are doing poorly in the league.
FoxinNotts Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 Iversen Wormleighton Soyuncu Vestergaard Thomas Ndidi Mendy Perez Iheanacho Albrighton Vardy
PhillippaT Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 So - are we doomed here, too, or is this more of our level atm? /s (ish)
BrummieFOX Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 Unfathomable that we lose this. Surely its a routine win. They are woeful.

The People's Hero Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 Gillingham are absolute tripe. Seriously; I watch a lot of Conference football and a lot of Gillingham. Genuinely think they will struggle when they drop down to that division (which they will). They do work hard though and do put a foot in, so our lads will have to be up for it. They simply can't defend, but do so in numbers, so if we can get going, we could smash them out of sight. Probably important to win that midfield battle. I'd have no issue with Mendy and Ndidi against this lot and just control that space and hope our quality is too much. It really should be. Gillingham is an absolute dump by the way and I strongly suspect you lot will all be in the 'temporary' stand. Scally's legacy! The club has just changed hand so a few Gills fans have given up their boycott. Let's hope we're not the start of some sort of Gills resurgence.
AjcW Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 I think Kasey might play in place of either Timmy or Luke, just to give one of them a rest Similarly would imagine Brunt will come into the midfield, I might be mistaken but i'm sure he played at left back second half against Watford in the Covid cup game? Potentially could give both full backs a rest if he slots in there? Could also put Albrighton on one of the wing back slots, essentially I think we have to rest one if not both of them as we have no one else if they get injured! I'd go..... Iverson McAteer Soyuncu Wilf Brunt/Thomas Braybrooke (if fit?) Mendy Sharky Barnes Perez Nacho I think Harvey needs to stay in to find some form!

They are bottom of the football league with 7 goals in 23 games. Have we literally ever played a worse side competitively? We played Enfield in the FA Cup in the mid 90s, they cant have been any higher than 6th tier at the time.
StanSP Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 10 hours ago, Tuna said: I mean they are bottom of the football league, surely you'd expect a comfortable win, right? The fact we can't even really rest Thomas or Castagne sums it up really. Just don't want any more injuries in this game. I'd play Albrighton RB and Thomas LB. Give Castagne a rest for the Newcastle cup game. Iversen Albrighton - Vestergaard - Brunt - Thomas Mendy - Braybrooke Maswanhise - Perez - Barnes Iheanacho Something a bit different and if the youngsters (Brunt, Maswanhise & Braybrooke) are fit, it allows some others to rest & recuperate before the more important Newcastle/Forest games. Also allows players like Vestergaard, Mendy, Albrighton more minutes, and hopefully Barnes/Iheanacho to regain some form and confidence. Could even be a 4-4-1-1 with Maswanhise and Barnes as the wingers, and Perez supporting Iheanacho. Either way, it really emphasises the lack of depth due to the injuries. @Ric Flair @moore_94 I know you guys follow the Academy/U21s closer than most; would it be likely we'd see quite a few play this game, if fit?

You would hope we would see at least a couple but we have had cup games previously where we should’ve done it but didn’t so god knows I think Braybrooke might be injured, the below are who were in the latest first team training photos: Lewis Brunt Kasey McAteer Wanya Marcal-Madivadua Maswanhise Ideally at least Brunt and Maswanhise would start but not holding my breath 1

I still live in Kent, although not in Medway. Gillingham are absolutely dire. They've not even deserved the very few points they have. If Maidstone manage to stay up, we're going to get a proper Kent derby next year.

Sunbury Fox Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 It says everything about my current mood and the team's current ineptitude and disarray that I'm really worried about this game.

The sides who've bounced back quickly have been the ones that are well-run, not necessarily well funded; although now there are lots down there with a lot of funding.. and a real mix of fully pro, semi pro sides etc. Scunthorpe are an example of a club in major crisis. Wrexham and Notts County are two examples where there is some reasonable structure and level of management/oversight of the club and of course good support and funding. Gillingham have new ownership in place, but its far too early to really see or understand what impact that has in terms of approach/funding etc but perhaps most importantly, there is a possibility the fans now come back to Priestfield (big anti-Scally sentiment). They are absolutely terrible though. There only hope of survival is that there are several other absolutely terrible sides in League 2. There's a good few in there who would really struggle in the Conference. 1
taupe Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 I would think that if we could manage total change of lineup (from yesterday) then we would, given the game at Newcastle on Tuesday. I'm just not sure how possible it will be though because of the injuries we have. Without disrespect to Gillingham, we can probably afford to field a much changed that includes a number of the kids with a beefed-up bench. It'd be the way I'd play it. We only need a win, not a hatfull.

I genuinely don’t see how we lose this, it’s meant in no disrespect to Gillingham. But, if we did, there simply are no excuses and for me the club would be unable to ignore current failings and would have to address continuing issues, an internal inquest as such. I think we need something drastic, we’re currently rolling along on poor form and then picking up wins against worse teams which papers over the cracks.
Leicesterpool Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 You would think lose this Rodgers would be gone. Honestly it'll turn very sour in the away end very quickly if we don't start off well. We get to half time and still 0-0 Leicester fans will be on the players backs.
South Shire Fox Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 Reserve side please, **** the cups this year and lets make sure we are still a Prem side next season.

Braybrooke would be the most obvious but I think he's injured and if he isn't then that doesn't bode well as he's stopped training with the 1st team and despite a depleted squad not made rhe bench either.

purpleronnie Posted 4 January 2023 Posted 4 January 2023 As bad as we are I can't imagine us losing at Gillingham.
