Changes to Football Rules You Would Like To See

Recommended Posts

Is there any rules you would like to see changed or put into place in the beautiful game

For example...

Induction of sin bins- When a outfield player receives a yellow card they must leave the pitch, in what is like cooling down period and remain off the pitch for three minutes. Exception being the goalkeeper.

Transfer Limit- Unlikely to happen but put a transfer cap on how much a club spends in one season, no club is allowed to spend over £100 million in one season.

Drinking in stands- Again another one unlikely to happen in the top 5 divisions in England, but allow fans to drink alcohol in stands. Works okay in Germany.

SCRAP VAR- Well actually no I'd keep VAR, but again only used for clear and obvious. Perhaps allow give more power to the referee to decide if he wants to use VAR certainly if he's unsure of a decision. Also reduce the time frame of a review decision, the VAR panel is only given minute to decide an outcome. If past that point the original decision remains.

Offside- For me there must be daylight between the defender and the attacker. Just don't see any advantage if an attacker is a toe in front of a defender.

Four relegated from the League Two- I never understand why only two teams are relegated from League Two, even though the premier league, League One and Championship and have three or more. It certainly needs to be upped

More homegrown talent- There should be more encouragement for clubs to utilise their youth system. Maybe a rule in the 25 man squad, it must include at least five players promoted from the youth academy. Plus on a matchday, you must have at least three academy graduates involved in the squad if it's on the bench.

What other other changes would you like to see?

Add the proper amount of time after 90 mins for time-wasting during the game. This was done during the WC and it worked (though inexplicably some moaned when 10-12 minutes were rightly added in some matches).

It really worked in that, after the early games, there was a lot less time-wasting in games - hence less added time was needed later in the tournament.

More yellow cards for diving.

Action to reduce persistent petty fouling (minor shirt-pulling, barging, obstruction etc.), but without disrupting the flow of the game.

Where petty fouling doesn't disrupt an attack, allow play to continue. But if it is happening repeatedly or eventually proves to have disrupted an attack, hand out yellow cards - after a move has ended, preferably.

All the ones Alf mentioned.

Divisional wage caps, ideally Europe wide with say the top 5 leagues in terms of coefficient having a specific cap, then the next 5, etc.

Steal Germany’s ownership rules.

Make referee match reports publicly available.

Let the weirdos take their shirts off if they want to.

I don't mind the binning of VAR but there has to be a fundamental shift in attitudes to referees that they are human and will make mistakes. Mistakes that sometimes VAR could've easily cleared up. Not pro-VAR, I'm just bored to death of thinking referees need to get 100% of their decisions right every game. Players don't, why do we expect referees to?

Time wasting, though is a big one for me. Football as a spectacle is being ruined by the constant time wasting and gamesmanship. I'd love to see a trial on time limits on throw-ins and corners. If you're fannying about with a throw-in and take longer than 15 seconds it goes to the other team. Same with a free kick. Take longer than X time and it becomes a contested drop ball instead.

If a player goes down injured and the referee decides to stop the game due to risk, the clock just stops dead. You won't eliminate this forever, feigning injury is a great tactic for stopping momentum the other team have built, or giving your knackered team mates a quick rest. Either that or, as has been said above, bring in the World Cup way and do injury time properly.

Penalty goal.

When a ball is handled on the line and it is obvious that it would have crossed the line without the deliberate handball (and in these days of multi angle replays it would be) then award a yellow card to the player who committed the foul and award the goal.

The only problem with timed sin-bin suggestions is that teams, particularly Eddie Howe teams would make sure there was no football played in that period by slowing it right down, having those dubious drop to knees clutching head for no reason situations, refusing to take throws until three players have come over to pretend they're taking it, Keeper setting up goal kicks that allow you to pop for a Bovril without missing anything etc, they'd just cheat or in football terms "Sensibly slow the game down" until their player is back.

Stop the clock for subs and injuries only.

Consider changing the handball rule to In-direct free kick for all handballs in the box, if it denies a goal or a clear goal scoring opportunity then can be upgraded to a penalty. Not sure what you do about attacking handballs though.

You'd get so many people deliberately cheating by handling the ball that way, they do it already. The punishment for that as a deterrent needs to be harsher, not looser.

  1. I'd like to see an end to the rule that requires there must be a relevant representative from the ‘Big Six’ sitting in the VAR control room at Stockley Park who has the casting vote on controversial decisions, which are inevitably in favour of their team.
  2. When negotiating next TV deal to insert a clause that no pundit, who previously played for one of the competing clubs, should be anywhere near the commentary box or heard from during play.
  3. If the above is not possible due to personal contractual reasons of the aforementioned pundits, that a ‘Mute Scouse’ option be made available via the Red Button.
  4. That for all games played at Wembley or any other stadium, both for club and country, no opera singer or ‘pop star’ should sing the National Anthem – leave it to the crowd!
  5. In relation to the cup draws;
    1. Not on the One Show!
    2. Also just draw the number and announce the name of the corresponding team….I do not feel we need to know, after every number is drawn,  that ‘Team x got here by beating Preston by last minute goal in the previous round’ or ‘ [Insert Manager}’s [Insert Team] are in the xth round for the 10th consecutive season’.  Just draw the frigging numbers and leave the unnecessary ‘one liners’ out of it.
  6. Give all referees training in anatomy of the human body. This would ensure they understand where on the body the head is actually located. This would end stoppage for ‘Head Injuries’ where the impact was actually, for example, on the ankle, back, knees, big toe, hands, arse etc. #Fulham

That's all for now folks.

Either scrap technical areas for managers or give someone a yellow for leaving once. Then a second yellow for leaving it again. We all know which annoying twat I'm talking about in the premier league.

They can I think but as with player dissent and time wasting it seems to be ignored .

Fair point.

Come to think of it I literally have no idea if the goalie 6 second rule is still a thing. If its not then its ignored too.

Drinking in stands is a shit idea.

Can't be arsed being doused in Chang because some tool chucks it in the air for "scenes".

Not to mention the amount of times you’ll have to move out of the way so people can go get their third pint of the half

In other countries, people walk about bringing beer to you.

In Caracas, it was 30p a litre and every drink came with a free collectible plastic glass…and you didn’t have to pay until the end of the match.

You could also flag over any number of men who supply you with all manner of tasty yet cheap snacks to have with your beer.

Similar story in Cali - football nirvana.

Happens in rugby all the time, especially people who dont go that often. Its good to have a pint but it gets a bit annoying after a while when a pint for each half would be fine.

And they probably let them pass but not sure football fans would be so willing to keep doing it every 5 minutes .
