Think it was the first game of the season - Castagne header v Brentford.

When was the last time we scored a penalty in normal play? Honestly have no idea.

Three things I've read about this match fill me with despondency ( not including Ward).

1.Ward - Prowse is nearing Beckhams free kick record.

2. Saints will play a high press.

3. Che Adams is back.

These together with our novelty goalkeeper suggest we will concede at least 3.

JWP needs 1 more to equal the best for a single season and who better to face than the worst keeper in (at least) Europe!

But hey we might score 4!

We're very feast or famine. So it'll be boring 1-0 either way, or lots of goals and entertainment which really could be in either team's favour lol

Play like we did at Villa and we role these comfortably, we are definitely at our best, the best team in the bottom half.

We’ve played some good football recently - Forget the 2nd half against man Utd and the Arsenal game - our season won’t be defined by how we play against the two best sides in the country.

I think we go here and win comfortably, I’m going 3-1 - Iheanacho hattrick

Not sure but I've noticed, maybe since VAR came in, that JV doesn't go down in the penalty area half as much as he used to.

He was a master of those dark arts in his prime as well as scaring the hell out of defenders into making the odd genuine mistake.

I appreciate your confidence and positivity. Disagree though. All the other sides around us are not writing these games off. That was what was so pleasing about the Spurs game, we got a result against a side in the top half!

Thing is, it was the manner of those defeats, followed up by a shocking performance in the cup exit. It’s clear that after a brief bounce, the heads have dropped again.

I really don’t see that heads have dropped again, though we will find out this afternoon.

The Man Utd game on another afternoon we win that, even the Arsenal game - much has been made about our pretty awful XG, but there’s I believe was also less than one. I don’t remember them having any chances at all really, other than the one they scored - we set out to nullify them, and the plan largely worked - Everton tried to have a bit more of a go and got thumped for it.

Blackburn was a shocker and I can’t bring anything from that other than the knowledge that the majority of that team won’t be starting today - and also we lost to a decent Championship side, todays opponents lost to a terrible league 2 side.

I’m far from saying everything is rosy, but there’s enough there to make us big favourites today

Has anyone said "must win" yet? Because as far as I am concerned it is.

Erm, Everton won their game against them?

Sorry, maybe my view is old fashioned but I’d rather have a go and win 1-0 even if the stats showed Arsenal dominated the game than ‘nullify them’ and lose 1-0 because we also nullified ourselves in the process!

Some good points in your post and think / hope you are correct, but to say we are the best of the bottom half is nonsense at this stage and we shouldn't be glossing over the dross of the last 2 Home matches

At our best, we are we’ve proved that with big wins over most of the teams in the bottom half this season - our problems are still really coming from the first 7 games - if we had maybe picked up 7 points them rather than the 1, we wouldn’t be looking over our shoulder now.

We don’t generally play well against high press teams BUT we do have the tools to make them pay if they don’t do it well.

how many teams go to st Mary’s this season with the view that most of our fanbase have today ???

We were abysmal v Blackburn, and Arsenal - but we started with a B team in one of those and the other was against the best team in the country right now.

We looked excellent in first half at Old Trafford, and prior to that had excellent wins v Villa and Spurs.

If the lads can channel their minds and focus on the positives I think we will win. Particularly if Maddison plays. I’m also hearing from Southampton supporting mates that it’s never been as toxic as it is at their place now. We need to take advantage of that - start quickly and murder em. The problem is most of the time we come out of the traps like a sloth.

Going out on a limb but I think Rogers will be sacked if we lose to Southampton we are in a very good place financially now.

Wrong on both counts I'm afraid.
