I could only really see Vestergaard digging in and refusing to move though.

I’m not so sure. I can see several players being sufficiently intrigued by the Maresca project to think, “I’ll see out my last year here and then decide what to do next.” And there’s ultimately no way for the club to prevent that.

When the mystery six say they've changed their minds, it's most likely their agents not being able to find better deals elsewhere. It doesn't mean they want to stay but don't have better offers (so far).

I'd say that we must keep Iversen as a number 2 as Mads is untested. He could turn out to be a dud and Iversen is a better back up than Ward.

There is no way of preventing that, but I’d be surprised if Ndidi and Iheanacho would prefer a season in the Championship, potentially being on the bench rather than a move away on at least as good financial terms. Same with Praet too.

Highly unlikely Iversen would be happy about going back to being a number 2 though….

Iheanacho apparently wants to stay. It wouldn’t surprise me if Ndidi is one of ‘the six’, too.

Iversen is the one we would be able to offload. Can’t see the benefit of keeping him as well as Ward.

If any of the 6 are players that are in the last year of their contract then we're being hugely mugged off.

You can almost guarantee that there will be offers on the table and they won't sign them unless things are going well. They're probably waiting until January, see how we're doing and assess then.

For example, I want Kel to stay, I like him, but if that's what he's doing then we're best to get rid now. I can't see where Ndidi will fit into this system, so there's 2 we can see go, Praet I don't really care about and any 2 of the senior keepers can go

Unless they sign a new contract. But the club should be getting tough and making it their choice rather than the player's, moving them on automatically if they don't sign a new deal.

The issue is, whilst we are in the Championship any contract renewals or new signings need to be on wages reflective of being in the Championship, barely any of our players are.

If Iheanacho would be happy to re-sign for £30-40k a week then great.

Yeah exactly, Iheanacho is probably on about 60k at the moment, if his last contract was about 90k plus the relegation clause. Realistically he’s not going to sign for that 40k limit, unless we offer a great incentive if we go back up.

You do realise there is no way of doing this, right? If a player with one year left refuses to sign for another team, there’s nothing you can do.

Yes obviously, language I used probably says otherwise. But it sounds like last season we were holding out for higher offers for players who we just needed to get rid of. One issue I imagine for clubs is that our recruitment has been to give decent but nonetheless average players, the best contract of their careers. I imagine this is one consideration clubs have when bidding for our players.

Even if we bumble our way back to the Premier League this season, we will have to have a complete cull with a complete clearout, so we can have a new side with any hope of surviving there.

This thread fills me with dread, but it needs to be done. Or does it?

When we got relegated I thought we’d experience a turnover on this level (ie with those mentioned in this thread being moved on as well), but it hasn’t happened to this point. If it does happen, and we assemble and finalise the team in the last few weeks of the window I cannot see how such a disjointed squad can get promoted. Which makes me think the club might get rid of 1 or 2 more, but I can’t see that a big a turnover from this point onwards.

Anyone with less than a year except for Vardy should be told to move on.

Think I make an exception for Iheanacho too.

Think he’ll be so effective at this level.

I think the players who could be exiting could look something like this:

Soumare

Souttar

Castagne

Praet

Albrighton

Iversen

Iheanacho

I'm doubtful we'll sell that many players though. We'd need to bring in at least a couple more after Rak Sakyi nd Casadei (if they do come in as rumours suggest)

Nope. Not at his age. New deal or gone. I simply don’t see him ripping the league up consistently, and we should have serious concerns about anyone’s motivation towards the end of a deal.

I have my ideas about who I'd like moving on from last seasons squad, but I can only trust Maresca who will have to make a judgement about players attitudes and application, particularly Vestegaarc and Ndidi

Posted

Ward

iverson

castagne

thomas/kristianson

souttar

chodury

ndidi

soumare

praet

daka/ihenacho

8-10 need to be sold or loaned out pronto and we need 6 in

cb

cm x 2

wing x 2

forward

Think you're spot on on this, as much as he seems a great guy, we don't need players that think 'oh well, I won't be here next year anyway'
