There’s no question we look way better in possession with Vesty on the pitch. He also gives us another option on set pieces, which we’re going to need to keep being efficient on in order to succeed.

I still think the best move with him is using him selectively. Against teams where we figure to have a decent amount of the ball, he starts. Against the top six or eight clubs use him as a bench option if we’re (inevitably) trailing late. The notion of using him in a three or as a CDM against those sides is an interesting one but it’d be a big gamble, and there’s no evidence Cooper is inclined to set us up that way.

He’s poor from set pieces given his height.

While that's true, a 6'6 CB is bound to draw the attention of more than one defender to himself.

We've been absolutely shocking without him though. He can only be an improvement.

Which is fine but doesn’t seem to make any different to our attacking set pieces. I think Caleb is more of a presence than vesty.

I’d like to see him win more heads from both offensive and defensive set pieces. Maybe it’s a delivery thing because he was decent at Southampton for doing that.

He gets on the end of a fair few I feel, but his heading is a bit wayward when attacking. I do hope he can add defensive stability, because we should have been conceding a few more goals so far if we're honest.

Reality is none of our centre back options are particularly good. I personally prefer Faes and Okoli as a pair as they are more mobile and I think should improve over time, but they will make errors. Despite being 6ft 6 or whatever Vestergaard is not good in the air and he is far too slow in my opinion to play anything other than a low block.

I thought he was brilliant last night, especially considering the difficulty of replacing the world class Wout Faes. His passing with both feet is quality. The redemption arc continues.

Unless it's one of the real power clubs I just think Vesty is vital to have out there. So much of our buildup starts with him.

Agreed, I do get annoyed at times with him in the build up though, multiple times last night he could have opened up his body and played it out to Kristensen who had so much space but instead he played it back inside which might be a system thing.

I had similar annoyance with Jonny Evans who appeared to refuse to pass to his left back lol

There was a quote I saw a few weeks ago about passing to a team mate should provide them with a solution, not create a problem for the player receiving the pass. While I think that pass to VK was on numerous times, I think Vesty was also looking at whats the next phase after that, i.e would it open up an option for VK to play, or would it allow West Ham an opportunity to go and regain possession and counter. There were a number of times we tried forcing the ball out right to Justin/Kasey and more often than not it turned over possession and led to us defending immediately.

I get the feeling he could read how West Ham were shaping up and thought at that moment keeping possession was more beneficial considering we were hanging on to that 1-0 lead for large parts.

Quality block when they hit the post. The one time Bowen had a chance to run at him, he just dangled a leg, so it's clear he's never going to be able to cope with that. But, if we can be fairly compact, he can do a good job for us at the moment. Way more reliable than Faes which is saying something considering JV's performances prior to last season were as out of depth as somebody could be at this level.

Might just be an illusion but the defence seems far less chaotic when he plays.

Coady and Vestergaard were both incredibly comfortable. Both looked in control, both barking instructions out

I know we were under a lot of pressure from them but we never really panicked and lost shape. They both blocked really well.

And at no point did their passing seem stressed or off, no stupid risks taken

I'd personally feel better to see one of Vesty or Coady alongside Okoli so we had some pace back there but so long as the Belgian Waffle isn't playing I'm happy enough

No idea where to put this, but as a CB myself, Vestergaard would be a dream to play alongside.

So assured on the ball, lets the defenders defend, takes it off the keeper, the CBs/FBs and the midfielders.

Always finds a pass, usually forwards.

Defends like a man. Body on the line (there’s no chance of injury, ever), but he dominates challenges, forceful in duels, doesn’t often lose his battles.

I think him or Coady can make Okoli a good defender.

I think he’s always got an issue with being dropped because he knows he’s better than what he selected, by a mile.

Okoli, JV, Coady… rotated or as a 3 is the one.

We’ll submit possession most weeks, but with that, if we have a solid base, Vardy, Daka, Mavididi, McAteer, Ayew breaking. We will win enough points to stay up.

We’ll have games that make us want to put our head in a blender, but we will do enough.

Saw a clip in twitter from an ex coach at Southampton who said Les ??? Can’t recall their DOF name signed him against the wishes of the manager mark hughes. Said we knew he couldn’t run and didn’t even win many headers. He really does improve build up play but he’s a liability when there is any movement. That’s why he was taken off I guess?

Ruud says he was hooked at HT because he was ill. I'm not buying that at all. Something kicked off in the changing rooms.

Absolutely my thought too. Vestergaard always calls it out.

That's Rodgers, Cooper and Ruud he's fell out with. I like this guy.
