Absolutely. Jack Walker bought it and assembled an expensive squad, and we had a bunch of free transfers, modest fees, journey men and rejects.

The greatest win in sporting history and it isn't even a debate.

Controversial, and sacrilegious I know, but I'd say that Forest's two European Cups and possibly league title surpasses it.

Their league title in that era surpasses winning the Premier League in this era?

Possibly not - that's why I use the word. But it's all relative and their resources were woefully meagre. The European Cups were an unparalleled achievement.

I don't think they'd have won the champions league. Neither of their European Cup wins would have been 50/1 to win never mind 5000/1. That's why ours is the best achievement in any sport.

I shall bite.

Their league win was in an era promoted teams could compete at the top of division 1 after promotion.

The one team per country format in the european cup meant less competition than the current format.

They broke the british transfer record, we barely spent a fraction of the that.

Theirs is still a great acheivement.

All fair points. They did break the domestic transfer record with the signing of Trevor Francis in 1979 and subsequently won the two consecutive European Cups but won the league in the 77-78 season. Like I said, it is all relative, and the transfer market today is in no way comparable but for a club that were putting on cheese and wine events to raise money when Cloughie, what he built and what they went on to achieve was astonishing.

Yep. People forget that in the 70s teams like Ipswich and Qpr were seen as potential champions, and teams like Derby and Forest did actually win Division 1.

Always found the Forest thing ****in to a point because it’s used as a stick to knock the achievement down but then when we faced the Champions of Belgium, Portugal and Denmark in Europe we were told we only progressed because we didn’t play top sides.

Yet it was type of team Forest were turning out against.

Before our title win the last non big 6 side to finish in the top 4 spots was Everton in 2005. It was a miracle for a a non big six side to even get champions league football let alone a newly promoted side and for us to actually win the league was unthinkable.

In Forest's era, newly promoted sides (promoted in the last 2 seasons) would break into the top 4 every 3 seasons. The gap between the top teams in the first division and the top teams in the second division was a lot smaller than nowadays. I would actually argue that the gap between Man City and Arsenal/Spurs in recent seasons is bigger than an established 1970s team like Arsenal and a 1970s promoted second division side. It's certainly more of a common occurence in the latter for the weaker side to finish above the established side.

Blackburn spent but so did the other teams going for the title at that time.

I don't ever compare us to Blackburn, it's completely different, but a team would not get promoted now and finish top 4 (let alone win the division within three seasons) regardless of how much they spent.

I'd say it's more like them backing Luton next season after they somehow escape relegation this year.

It would be madness.

I get rattled by comparisons with Luton. We have never been that small. I've heard several times now in their local press and phone ins where fans have outrageous optimism claiming that if Leicester can do, so can they. In particular, one caller on 606 in pre-season predicting that Luton will win the league and giving 2015/16 as 'evidence'. The caller was obviously destroyed by Savage and Sutton but he's not the only one. Fans can dream but comparisons with Leicester would require illegal substances.

We we’re probably the biggest club after West Ham never to have won it

What really made me think about it was how last season ALL pundits were shocked and surprised by how Arsenal were top and what an amazing feat it was for a team like them to be near the top like it was the biggest turn around in history… Arsenal!?

Title odds at the start of the season:

Leicester 5,000-1

Blackburn 7-2

Then there's the financial comparison. Vichai and Jack Walker were both very rich owners who were adored by the fans, but whereas Jack's money bought Rovers the title, Vichai's money was not a siginificant factor in 2015/16, as shown by this extraordinary graph of points won relative to wage bill:

In fairness, if Luton win the league next season after escaping relegation, it would be a bigger feat than ours.

They’re an awful team and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them get the lowest points total ever.
